Chapter 2

作者: Quinn Loves Cilantro
After washing up, I went to bed alone.

In the middle of the night, I felt a pair of warm hands slide over my body.

Yvonne's kisses were passionate, but there was a trace of complaint in her voice.

"Why didn't you wait for me? No matter how late it got, you always waited for me before going to bed."

I froze for a second. Despite feeling sleepy, I was suddenly hit with a wave of nausea.

She reminded me of just how pathetic I'd once been.

Not long after we got married, she'd started coming home later and later.

In the beginning, I waited from ten o'clock to one in the morning. Gradually, it went way past midnight and eventually reached dawn.

She hated it when I called to check on her, so all I could do was pace around the house like a restless ghost.

On good nights, she'd eventually come home, but she'd also bring home traces of other men.

On bad nights, I'd stay awake until sunrise and never see her at all.

I had fought with her, yelled at her, and turned our lives upside down over it.

She had watched it all with cold indifference. Only after I'd completely worn myself out would she deliver a cold remark.

"Stop acting like a lunatic."

Apparently annoyed that I'd drifted off in thought, Yvonne pinched my cheek. She then spoke in a tone that sounded almost like she expected praise.

"I told him off and also cut off his credit card. He'll apologize to you tomorrow."

I frowned and intercepted her wandering hands before pushing them away.

I then got out of bed and headed to the guest room.

"I have a stomachache. I'm not up for this."

Yvonne's expression stiffened. Anger flashed across her face.

She clenched her jaw and stared at me.

"You had a stomachache last week, and now it's happening again? Jason Ziegler, do you really take me for a fool?" She sneered.

I ignored her. Just as I reached for the guest room door, she ran over.

"I know you're still angry about the things I did before, but I've changed. Can't you see that?"

There was a pleading note in her voice. She grabbed my hand and pressed it against the tattoo on her chest.

[Jason.]

It was my name.

For a moment, my mind drifted back to a distant memory. We'd gotten those tattoos together when we were eighteen.

Her family wanted her to study medicine, but she wanted to follow me overseas to study instead.

After one particularly heated argument, she went out and got the tattoo.

When I found her, I broke down crying.

She hadn't used any anesthesia. Although her face had gone pale from the pain, her eyes shone brightly.

She'd touched my face and said proudly, "No one is ever taking you away from me."

Back then, I'd naively believed that was what everlasting love felt like.

That was why, years later, when another man sent me photos of himself kissing that same tattoo, something inside me had simply broken.

I couldn't feel sadness or heartbreak.

The only thing that gave me any relief was hurting myself. Watching blood flow out of my body was the only way I could catch a breath in the suffocating darkness.

I clenched my fists and smiled in a considerate way.

"You're overthinking it. I really don't feel well. Everything that happened before is in the past. Let's stop talking about it."

Yvonne froze. A flicker of guilt appeared in her eyes.

"Really?" After several seconds of silence, she said solemnly, "Then get some rest. If you really feel unwell, you should go to the hospital."

I nodded. Ignoring the longing in her eyes, I shut the door.

The next second, Jennifer Sheppard sent me a photo of the champion's trophy she'd won at her baseball tournament. It looked like she was eager for praise.

Come to think of it, I owed meeting Jennifer to Yvonne.

Three years ago, Yvonne had gotten involved with one of her students. I'd tracked them down at the school and was determined to confront him.

Yvonne protected him. She called in security to surround me before leaving with her arms around him.

A crowd gathered around me. Their eyes were full of sympathy.

That was the day I finally broke down. I climbed to the roof of the building in one desperate burst of determination.

Just as I was about to jump, someone tackled me to the ground.

It was Jennifer. She wrapped both arms around my waist and held on for dear life. Her warm breath brushed against my face.

She seemed determined to comfort me. After racking her brain for a moment, she blurted out, "If she's cheating, why can't you?"

'That's right. Why can't I?' I thought.

Jennifer was physically gorgeous, and she smelled wonderful. She was leagues above Jennifer.

From that day on, we began secretly dating.

"Great job. Keep it up."

After praising her, I switched off my phone and went to bed.

Yvonne's gaze darkened. She said through clenched jaws, "Break up with her. That girl is just a fling. I'll forgive you as long as you end things with her."I laughed and immediately shook off her hand."Who asked for your forgiveness? Have you completely lost your mind?"Yvonne, do you have any idea how sick I am of you? What makes you think you're in any position to forgive me?"Her face turned pale."I made mistakes, but you're not innocent either, are you? Why can't we both compromise? Why does it have to get so messy?"'Messy?'I looked at her with contempt and asked calmly, "During our five years of marriage, you went from one affair to the next. Why couldn't you compromise then? Why couldn't you stop for a second and look at the husband you were destroying?"The day after my car accident, you disappeared without a trace. You left me alone at home. You didn't even say a single word of comfort."Yvonne, whatever we had ran out a long time ago. At least for me, you're no d

Yvonne charged forward and immediately got into a fight with Jennifer. The two women clawed at each other. Despite being much younger, Jennifer didn't give an inch.My head was pounding. I ran over and pulled them apart.By the time I succeeded, both of them had bruises on their faces.I grabbed a tissue and gently pressed it against a cut on Jennifer's cheek. I then grabbed her wrist before she could charge forward again."Jennifer, if you get into another fight, I'm breaking up with you!"She froze instantly. The hostility in her faded away. Looking both hurt and annoyed, she stared at me.I softened my voice while ignoring the murderous glare from Yvonne."Be good. Go to the hospital first."Jennifer could hear the concern in my voice. She immediately said, "Okay."She then walked past Yvonne with her head held high.Yvonne couldn't stand it. She reached out and grabbed my arm. There was a pleading tone in her voice. Yvonne found herself shamelessly thinking, 'So what if I cheated a few times? He's a grown man. Why can't he be a little more understanding? Men make mistakes all the time. Why can't women? Why is Jason being so heartless?'She stormed into the bedroom like a madwoman and began searching for any trace of the other woman. The moment she looked at the bed, her eyes narrowed. She couldn't help but wonder if Jason had ever brought that woman home and spent the night in that same bed.The thought sent her into a blind rage.Yvonne grabbed a knife and jabbed it against the bedsheet and the comforter. Like a lunatic, she slashed and tore at everything in sight.Only when the fabric lay in shredded pieces across the floor did she finally collapse from exhaustion. For the first time, she realized just how much Jason must have suffered all these years. She was losing her mind over one person. How much pain had Jason endured? She'd selfishly ignored it again and again.Overwhelmed with

The air felt still.Yvonne's eyes went wide as she lost control and grabbed me just as I was leaving."Jason! Who was that wretch?"I shook her off and said calmly, "That's none of your business.""How dare you?" She raised her hand high. Her eyes were so red that they looked ready to bleed."How dare you do this to me?"After hesitating for several seconds, she lowered her hand in defeat.Henry wasn't willing to let it go. He shouted from the side, "Jason, how could you do this to Yvonne? She loves you so much, and you cheated on her!"After saying that, he tried to punch me.Before he could even reach me, Yvonne pushed him away.Henry stumbled backward and fell, but Yvonne ignored him and kept her eyes on me.Her voice was trembling. "It's fake, isn't it? You hired someone to pretend to be your lover just to make me jealous."I looked at her calmly without saying a word.Yvonne started crying. For a moment, I was genuinely stunned. It was the first time I'd ever seen her

I was trembling with rage as I headed straight to Henry's house.Henry answered the door in a bathrobe. It looked like he'd just stepped out of the shower. The moment he saw me, a smug grin appeared on his face."Well, Jason. To what do I owe the honor?"He dramatically covered his mouth and winked at me."Did your mother die? Did you come to drag Yvonne back home–"Ahh!"Feeling enraged, I grabbed him by the collar and drove my fist into his face."You lowlife!"Henry's miserable scream quickly drew Yvonne's attention. She yanked me away in a panic and ordered her bodyguards to pin me to the ground."Jason, you've lost your mind!"Pain shot through every inch of my body, but it wasn't even a fraction of the agony in my heart.Fighting back tears, I pointed at Henry, who was already putting on his innocent act, and yelled, "He sent intimate photos of you two to my mom! She's unconscious in the ICU right now!"Yvonne froze. She turned to look at Henry sternly.Henry immed

The next morning, I was woken up by laughter and playful chatter.Feeling the onset of a headache, I walked out of the room. At the doorway of the master bedroom, I found Henry practically glued to Yvonne's side."Don't worry, Yvonne. I'll make sure to give Jason a proper apology."Unlike Henry's carefree attitude, Yvonne looked preoccupied."Stop being childish, and don't make him angry again.""Okay, okay. Can I get a kiss now?"Henry stood on his tiptoes and kissed her. Yvonne didn't pull away. The moment our eyes met, I thoughtfully closed the bedroom door for them."Jason!"Hurried footsteps came from behind me. Yvonne grabbed me by the arm.The veins at her temple throbbed. She was obviously holding back her anger."What exactly was that supposed to mean?"The question left me confused."It didn't mean anything."Her grip tightened. I frowned."Have you lost your mind? Let go!"Instead of letting go, her expression darkened further."Are you blind? Didn't you see
