Chapter 5

Author: Margot
At the pack headquarters, Ethan kept glancing at his watch, a rare trace of agitation showing on his face.

He couldn't afford to delay any longer.

What time was Theo's contest again? He couldn't remember.

I had reminded him over and over yesterday, but he hadn't taken it to heart.

A vague sense of panic rose in his chest. He slipped away from the guests celebrating Liam's birthday and hurried back toward his office.

He'd bought Theo a toy car that morning, planning to give it to him after the event.

Mira had been watching him and quickly followed.

"Alpha Ethan, you haven't had any cake," she said gently.

"You all go ahead. I've got something to do," Ethan replied without turning around, his tone perfunctory.

Mira quickly signaled Liam with a look. He immediately tugged at Ethan's coat, looking up with pleading eyes.

"Alpha Ethan, you said you'd teach me golf! Why are you leaving so soon?"

Ethan hesitated, crouching down to comfort him. "I've got something urgent today. I'll

Theo recently learned how to skateboard, and I couldn't have been prouder.I followed behind him with my phone every day, snapping photos nonstop. It never felt like enough. His skills were getting better, and that mischievous spark all little boys had was finally starting to show.He often rode his skateboard with the puppy in tow, sometimes even gliding past pretty girls just to say, "Miss, you're gorgeous!" He was practically bursting with pride. As I watched him act like that, I laughed so hard I doubled over. That was when Ethan found us. His steps faltered when he saw Theo's confidence and the bright smile on my face. He didn't even dare to come any closer. It was I who noticed him first and walked over.He wanted to speak, but I beat him to it. "Are you here to deliver the breaking mate bond papers?Ethan looked pale. His hair was a mess, and the dark circles under his eyes were heavy. He sniffled, but the tears still slipped out. "I'm sorry."I nodded calmly. "I acc

I took Theo and boarded a train to a small, remote pack.It was far from the center of power. The resources were limited, but life moved at a slower pace. It was quiet and peaceful. We settled in quickly. Within three days, I had rented a modest two-bedroom house. It wasn't big, but the rent was only a quarter of what we used to pay.More importantly, the school was just a ten-minute walk away. Theo could go to and from school independently, and I no longer had to drop him off or pick him up.With that, I finally had my hands free and found a stable full-time job. After work, I picked up my old side hustle—freelance design. I took on small orders from nearby packs and trade networks. The pay was modest, just a few tens of dollars a day. However, it added up and became a steady source of extra income.Life without Ethan was surprisingly steady.Theo had been quiet during our first week here, but he was far more adaptable than I expected, especially after I bought him a gentle,

What was Ethan really afraid of?He stood frozen, his whole body trembling like he'd just been struck by lightning. He finally realized that what he feared most wasn't his identity being exposed or falling out with Mira—what truly terrified him was losing me and Theo for good.He had long stopped caring about Mira. What he clung to wasn't Mira herself, but the version of himself who once failed to keep her. That regret had turned into an obsession, a vain attempt to make up for what was lost. But that was never love. The one who truly mattered to him was me—the woman who always waited for him to come home.Once he figured that out, he couldn't sit still another second. He spun around and bolted out the door, heading straight to the diner where I used to work.Out of breath, he asked the owner if he knew where I'd gone. The owner behind the counter didn't even look up. "She quit. How would I know? Don't block the register."Ethan's gaze turned cold instantly. The weight of his

Ethan's hand trembled slightly as he drove. He kept calling me over and over again, but his calls didn't go through. He stared at the screen, his throat tightened.I was probably still angry and just needed some time—that was what he kept telling himself. As long as he came home and apologized, everything could be salvaged.I'd always been gentle and never argued with him. I'd treated him with such kindness, without boundaries. That was exactly why he pushed his limits again and again. No, that was not how it really was.His grip on the steering wheel tightened all of a sudden. A sharp pain seized his chest, nearly making him black out. He'd always been a flirt, and his sweet talk had won over more than a few women. However, I was the only one he ever truly cared about, from beginning to end.I was the reason he wanted to settle down when he was still wild and restless. However, he had screwed it up. It wasn't a single mistake—it was how he slowly pushed me away, step by step

I didn't know how long had passed before Ethan finally realized something was off. He came over and knocked on the bathroom door."Cheryl, what's going on? Why are you still in there?" he asked.I didn't answer. He pushed the door open in a panic and saw my swollen eyes.Expressionless, I walked right past him. I heard him sigh in frustration behind me."Don't be like this, darling. It was just a toy. I swear I'll buy another one tomorrow. Please don't look at me like that. I can't take it."No, this wasn't about a toy anymore, but I didn't say a word.…Dinner was unusually quiet—the suffocating silence lingered like a thick fog.Ethan glanced at me, then at Theo, who kept his head down and hadn't said a word. After a moment's hesitation, he picked up a piece of roasted chicken and placed it on Theo's plate.Theo's eyes lit up immediately, a flash of surprise blooming across his little face.My chest tightened, and I almost cried. To a pup who'd never truly been loved, even

Ever since I politely shut my boss down after he made inappropriate comments toward me, he had always treated me horribly.Even when I was drenched in soup, he refused to let me take a break and insisted I keep working. My coworkers looked at me with sympathy, but I no longer cared. After a long, hazy afternoon of nonstop work, I went home covered in stains. As soon as I stepped through the door, Theo ran toward me. He was still little, but he'd already learned how to read people. The second he saw the state I was in, worry flooded his golden eyes.I didn't comfort him. Instead, I scooped him up in excitement."Theo, your dad actually got you a present this time! I saw it!" I exclaimed. But instead of lighting up with joy, Theo gently touched my cheek with his small hand. His voice was full of concern as he asked, "Mom, did someone bully you? What happened to your clothes? Are you hurt?"My heart clenched. I held back the sting in my chest and forced a sheepish smile."No, sw

Theo froze. The worst he'd imagined was not having his wolf—he had never thought his family might fall apart. But he quickly came to his senses. His voice trembled with fear as he asked, "Mom, you're not going to leave me, are you?""My silly pup, I would never leave you," I thought.I pulled his small body into my arms, my voice strained. "If you want to live with your dad, maybe life will be easier."Theo looked at the picture of the toy. He whispered, "Mom, let's just wait a bit longer. Half a month… No, just one more week. Please?"I understood. He was still hoping Ethan would keep his promise, even if just once. I nodded. I couldn't bring myself to say no.…The next day, after dropping him off at school, I went to work as usual. That award-winning restaurant never got back to me. When I followed up, the position had already been filled. With no other choice, I started working at a small diner. Since I was a part-timer, the pay was low.I wasn't without ability—my firs

How much would it cost to book the entire award-winning restaurant? Would it be a few hundred dollars, or more like a couple thousand? My hands trembled as I looked it up. The cost was over a hundred thousand dollars, enough to feed us for seven years. The number felt like a fine needle, pricking at my eyes until they ached."Mom, that was Dad, right? Is he really not a wolfless Omega, but an Alpha?"Theo Rickman finally worked up the courage to ask me after a long silence. His face was filled with confusion and unease, but he waited patiently for my answer. It was indeed Ethan Rickman, my husband. However, the way he'd booked out a restaurant as an Alpha was a side of him neither of us had ever seen.Theo had grown up being looked down on because Ethan didn't have his wolf. His teachers overlooked him, as if mediocrity had been written into his bones. His classmates mocked him behind his back, saying weakness ran in his blood.Even neighbors would sneer at his face. "His dad's
