Chapter 4

Autor: Bright Lights
Hannah was caught off guard. She hadn't expected Ethan to be home.

Usually, whenever he went out with Sara, he used "entertaining clients" as an excuse, staying out all night and not showing his face until sometime the next afternoon.

The pillow slammed into the bridge of her glasses, sending a sharp jolt of pain through her nose. Blood immediately began trickling down over her upper lip.

Ethan paused, a flicker of guilt crossing his face. He reached for a box of tissues and started to get up, apparently intending to help clean her up.

But halfway there, he stopped himself and sank back onto the couch, his expression hardening as he switched to an interrogating tone. "Why are you back so late? You're hours past your curfew. Where have you been?"

Hannah ignored him entirely.

She opened a drawer, took out a bottle of antiseptic and some cotton swabs, and quietly cleaned the blood from her face. Her complete indifference only made Ethan angrier.

"I asked you a question. Are you deaf or something?" he demanded. "Did you do something behind my back that you're afraid to admit?"

"What about you?" Hannah gave him a cold, faint smile. "Why are you suddenly home so early? Don't you need to keep Sara company?"

Ethan froze, clearly not expecting her to confront him so directly. He quickly recovered, scowling.

"What are you talking about? I didn't have any client dinners tonight, so after helping Sara, I came straight home. And all those other times were business trips and client work. Stop reading too much into everything.

"I came home early because I knew you were in a bad mood and wanted to be here for you. Standing you up today was my fault, but does that give you the right to ignore my texts and stay out until midnight? I thought something had happened to you. I was seconds away from calling the police.

"And what do I get in return? You walk through the door throwing passive-aggressive jabs at me. I even stopped by that place and picked up your favorite seafood soup because I was worried you might be hungry."

Hannah glanced at the bowl of soup sitting untouched on the coffee table. A wave of revulsion washed over her.

All these years, she hadn't realized that every time Ethan tried to manipulate her into taking some pill for Sara's sake, he brought home this same seafood soup afterward to placate her.

Now even the smell was enough to trigger a visceral wave of nausea.

"No thanks," she said flatly. "I already ate."

Ethan completely missed the icy undertone in her voice. Convinced that he had successfully smoothed things over, he continued casually, "By the way, Sara says her parents aren't easy to fool.

"They insist on seeing wedding photos before they'll back off, so I have to take a set of wedding photos with her tomorrow. You've done a ton of research on this stuff, so which photography studio has the fastest turnaround? And who carries the best high-end wedding gowns?"

His eyes shone with genuine anticipation, but that only made Hannah feel even more disgusted.

He knew perfectly well that every bit of research she'd done had been for their own wedding. And now he had the nerve to ask her to help plan a wedding photo shoot for himself and Sara?

Hannah shut him down without hesitation. "Figure it out yourselves. I don't have any recommendations."

The man standing in her kitchen wasn't Rhys.It was Ethan. He was wearing the hoodie Hannah had bought for him years ago, shortly after she graduated, as he carefully placed the final dish on the dining table. The moment he saw Hannah, Ethan froze before forcing a smile."Hannah, you're back. You must be exhausted from work. I made some of your favorite dishes. Don't worry. I don't mean anything by this. I just wanted to say a proper goodbye. Didn't you use to love the food I made?"Hannah glanced at the table piled with spicy dishes and felt absolutely nothing. It was true that she had once loved spicy food more than anything.Back then, even if Ethan just whipped up a simple dish with chili crisp, she would eat every bite with delight. But apparently, he'd forgotten. Or perhaps he'd never cared enough to remember.Over the years, Hannah had poured her blood, sweat, and countless sleepless nights into building his company. The endless client dinners and brutal workloads had ev

With Rhys holding her close, Hannah nodded gently.During her three months overseas, Rhys had taken exceptional care of her and had always respected and admired her talent. As it happened, she had grown fond of him too. So, when he confessed his feelings, she said yes, and the two of them officially started dating. When Rhys later learned that Hannah had once shared a matching bracelet with Ethan, he became so jealous that he insisted on taking her out to get a new pair for them.Neither of them had imagined it would lead to a misunderstanding like this.Ethan stared in disbelief at the way Rhys held Hannah. After a long pause, he demanded, "What did you say? Girlfriend? You two are dating? No way. I don't believe it. Hannah loved me so much. How could she possibly fall for someone else?"Then, as though he'd suddenly thought of an explanation, Ethan gave a relieved laugh."I get it! Hannah, you hired this guy to make me jealous, didn't you? That's quite a convincing performance

The moment Ethan saw Hannah, his eyes lit up. He jogged over to her side and caught her hand."Hannah, why did you block and delete me? And ever since you left, I've been posting photos with Sara on social media every day. I posted so many photos of us together. Why weren't you jealous at all?"You used to hate seeing Sara and me get close. Back then, I merely shared a cup of coffee with her and used the same straw, and you were so furious that you flipped the table. Why aren't you reacting now?"Hannah looked at him in confusion. "Yes, I flipped the table. But didn't you accuse me of being possessive, having a dirty mind, and seeing something filthy in everything?"Didn't you insist that you and Sara were strictly boss and employee and tell me to stop overthinking? Didn't you always want me to be more open-minded and generous? Now that I'm finally giving you exactly what you wanted, you should be happy."Seeing how completely unfazed she was, Ethan tightened his grip on her hand.

Before long, Ethan's once-thriving company became entangled in lawsuits and sank deep into a mountain of debt. Its stock price plummeted off a cliff. As for Ethan's grand threat to "blacklist Hannah from the industry," it had become nothing more than a joke. How could a company that couldn't even save itself, with its reputation in ruins, have any say over who remained in the industry? With nothing standing in her way, Hannah quickly established herself at Ernest's company. A string of brilliant design proposals delivered exceptional results, and her career continued to climb. To her, that so-called blacklisting was nothing more than a passing breeze. When Ernest learned about her failed relationship, he even took it upon himself to play matchmaker, hoping to help her move on."Hannah, what do you think of Rhys from the HR department?" he asked.Hannah was caught off guard.Rhys was a relatively new HR manager at the company. Though young, he was remarkably mature and capable,

"What?"Ethan's voice shot up into a shrill screech, like a cat whose tail had just been stepped on."Have you lost your mind? 50 percent? Why don't you just rob a bank? Do you really think this company can't survive without you?"Hearing his hysterical shouting, Hannah merely shook her head.It seemed he'd truly forgotten. Forgotten every promise he'd made when they first started the company. Forgotten everything he'd once said while holding her hand and swearing that they would build the business together. But Hannah still remembered those early days.Only a few months after the company was founded, they had already run out of money because they lacked a clear understanding of the market and had no viable business model. The corporate account was empty, and the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. It was Hannah who sold her parents' house, the property she had intended to rely on in her later years, and poured every penny into the company. She used the money to pay dozens

"Greedy? Me?" Hannah snorted, pointing at herself."I suppose Ethan has sheltered you so thoroughly that you have no idea how ordinary people actually live. And you certainly don't understand how ridiculous those words sound coming from you."She adjusted her Bluetooth earbud and continued with a scoff, "When I was building this company from the ground up with Ethan, I scrimped and saved, eating boiled vegetables with a little vinegar and soy sauce day after day."Even the lipstick I wore came from the dollar store. I drove that old Volkswagen for more than ten years, and the air conditioning barely worked."I was drenched in sweat every summer and freezing every winter. When I once suggested saving up for a modest car, do you know what Ethan said?"Hannah paused, then mimicked his old tone with a mocking smile. "He said, 'Hannah, we're in the middle of building a startup. How can you be so materialistic?"'Do you have any idea how much even a modest car costs once you add all th
