Chapter 5

Autor: Bright Lights
Ethan froze when his usual tactic had failed.

"Hey, I'm just putting on a show for Sara's family," he said sullenly. "Do you really have to take everything so seriously?"

"Whether it's an act or genuine feelings, you know better than anyone," Hannah countered.

The moment Ethan started talking about taking wedding photos, his eyes lit up with unmistakable excitement. Only an idiot would have missed what that meant.

Cornered by her response, Ethan finally lost his temper.

In ten years, this was the first time he'd ever found himself completely unable to win an argument with her.

"You're being completely unreasonable!" he snapped.

Hannah couldn't be bothered to waste another word on him. She turned toward the bedroom, but Ethan rushed ahead, snatched her pillow off the bed, and threw it into the hallway.

"You don't get to sleep in my bed anymore!" he shouted. "Go sleep in the study tonight and think about what you've done!"

He slammed the bedroom door shut, pulled out the key, and locked it from the inside as though he were barricading himself against a burglar. Hannah knew exactly what he was trying to do.

He was using the silent treatment to force her to come crawling back and apologize. What he didn't realize was that he'd just given her exactly what she wanted.

She had no intention of sharing a bed with him anymore. All she wanted was to pack up her things and leave as soon as possible.

In fact, aside from a few old dresses she'd worn for three or four years, there was hardly anything of value left for her in that bedroom.

Hannah shook her head, retrieved her suitcase from the corner of the living room, and carried it into the study. The moment she stepped inside, her eyes fell on the gift she'd given Ethan for their seventh anniversary.

It was a custom-made string-art portrait, painstakingly created from dozens of spools of thread wound hundreds of thousands of times around tiny metal nails according to a precise design.

She had spent an entire month working on it through sleepless nights. The finished portrait recreated a photograph from their first date at an amusement park.

She still remembered that Ethan hadn't wanted to take the picture at all. Because of his childhood issues, he was fiercely practical and had always viewed amusement parks as overpriced places designed to entertain children.

He thought taking pictures together was childish and embarrassing, so he had flatly refused to take even one photo with her.

Back then, Hannah had even taken on Sara's entire workload for the following quarter just to persuade him to finally give in and pose for one reluctant picture with her.

That was the first time they'd ever gone to an amusement park together. And it had also been the last.

Because the memory meant so much to her, Hannah had specially woven that photograph into the string-art portrait, desperate to preserve that moment of sweetness forever.

Over the years, she had meticulously checked the tension of the threads and the condition of every nail. She had even ordered a custom glass display case with desiccant packs sealed around the edges, all to make sure the portrait would never deteriorate.

She had protected that piece of art with the same painstaking care she had used to protect her fragile relationship with Ethan.

Only now did she understand that no matter how carefully she tended a relationship with someone who didn't love her back, all that effort was ultimately futile.

Slowly shaking her head, she took the framed portrait down from the wall and picked up a pair of scissors from the desk.

The moment the blades barely touched the edge, the tightly stretched threads snapped with a series of sharp pops, unraveling almost instantly.

It had looked perfectly intact on the surface, yet fell apart at the slightest touch. Just like her decade-long relationship with Ethan—all appearance and no substance.

She gave a bitter, self-mocking laugh and threw the tangled mass of broken thread straight into the trash.

She then began gathering the files from the desk, but as she lifted a loose folder, it slipped from her hands. More than 100 handwritten letters spilled across the floor.

She looked down and froze.

The man standing in her kitchen wasn't Rhys.It was Ethan. He was wearing the hoodie Hannah had bought for him years ago, shortly after she graduated, as he carefully placed the final dish on the dining table. The moment he saw Hannah, Ethan froze before forcing a smile."Hannah, you're back. You must be exhausted from work. I made some of your favorite dishes. Don't worry. I don't mean anything by this. I just wanted to say a proper goodbye. Didn't you use to love the food I made?"Hannah glanced at the table piled with spicy dishes and felt absolutely nothing. It was true that she had once loved spicy food more than anything.Back then, even if Ethan just whipped up a simple dish with chili crisp, she would eat every bite with delight. But apparently, he'd forgotten. Or perhaps he'd never cared enough to remember.Over the years, Hannah had poured her blood, sweat, and countless sleepless nights into building his company. The endless client dinners and brutal workloads had ev

With Rhys holding her close, Hannah nodded gently.During her three months overseas, Rhys had taken exceptional care of her and had always respected and admired her talent. As it happened, she had grown fond of him too. So, when he confessed his feelings, she said yes, and the two of them officially started dating. When Rhys later learned that Hannah had once shared a matching bracelet with Ethan, he became so jealous that he insisted on taking her out to get a new pair for them.Neither of them had imagined it would lead to a misunderstanding like this.Ethan stared in disbelief at the way Rhys held Hannah. After a long pause, he demanded, "What did you say? Girlfriend? You two are dating? No way. I don't believe it. Hannah loved me so much. How could she possibly fall for someone else?"Then, as though he'd suddenly thought of an explanation, Ethan gave a relieved laugh."I get it! Hannah, you hired this guy to make me jealous, didn't you? That's quite a convincing performance

The moment Ethan saw Hannah, his eyes lit up. He jogged over to her side and caught her hand."Hannah, why did you block and delete me? And ever since you left, I've been posting photos with Sara on social media every day. I posted so many photos of us together. Why weren't you jealous at all?"You used to hate seeing Sara and me get close. Back then, I merely shared a cup of coffee with her and used the same straw, and you were so furious that you flipped the table. Why aren't you reacting now?"Hannah looked at him in confusion. "Yes, I flipped the table. But didn't you accuse me of being possessive, having a dirty mind, and seeing something filthy in everything?"Didn't you insist that you and Sara were strictly boss and employee and tell me to stop overthinking? Didn't you always want me to be more open-minded and generous? Now that I'm finally giving you exactly what you wanted, you should be happy."Seeing how completely unfazed she was, Ethan tightened his grip on her hand.

Before long, Ethan's once-thriving company became entangled in lawsuits and sank deep into a mountain of debt. Its stock price plummeted off a cliff. As for Ethan's grand threat to "blacklist Hannah from the industry," it had become nothing more than a joke. How could a company that couldn't even save itself, with its reputation in ruins, have any say over who remained in the industry? With nothing standing in her way, Hannah quickly established herself at Ernest's company. A string of brilliant design proposals delivered exceptional results, and her career continued to climb. To her, that so-called blacklisting was nothing more than a passing breeze. When Ernest learned about her failed relationship, he even took it upon himself to play matchmaker, hoping to help her move on."Hannah, what do you think of Rhys from the HR department?" he asked.Hannah was caught off guard.Rhys was a relatively new HR manager at the company. Though young, he was remarkably mature and capable,

"What?"Ethan's voice shot up into a shrill screech, like a cat whose tail had just been stepped on."Have you lost your mind? 50 percent? Why don't you just rob a bank? Do you really think this company can't survive without you?"Hearing his hysterical shouting, Hannah merely shook her head.It seemed he'd truly forgotten. Forgotten every promise he'd made when they first started the company. Forgotten everything he'd once said while holding her hand and swearing that they would build the business together. But Hannah still remembered those early days.Only a few months after the company was founded, they had already run out of money because they lacked a clear understanding of the market and had no viable business model. The corporate account was empty, and the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. It was Hannah who sold her parents' house, the property she had intended to rely on in her later years, and poured every penny into the company. She used the money to pay dozens

"Greedy? Me?" Hannah snorted, pointing at herself."I suppose Ethan has sheltered you so thoroughly that you have no idea how ordinary people actually live. And you certainly don't understand how ridiculous those words sound coming from you."She adjusted her Bluetooth earbud and continued with a scoff, "When I was building this company from the ground up with Ethan, I scrimped and saved, eating boiled vegetables with a little vinegar and soy sauce day after day."Even the lipstick I wore came from the dollar store. I drove that old Volkswagen for more than ten years, and the air conditioning barely worked."I was drenched in sweat every summer and freezing every winter. When I once suggested saving up for a modest car, do you know what Ethan said?"Hannah paused, then mimicked his old tone with a mocking smile. "He said, 'Hannah, we're in the middle of building a startup. How can you be so materialistic?"'Do you have any idea how much even a modest car costs once you add all th
