Chapter 7

Autor: Bright Lights
Inside the safe, tiny objects had been carefully packed into individual vacuum-sealed bags, filling every inch of space.

Toys. Bookmarks. Even a lollipop.

Confused, Hannah turned the sealed bags over and discovered a sticky note attached to the back of each one, documenting where the item had come from.

[May 7, 2016. Sara gave me something for the first time in class today. It was a strawberry-flavored lollipop. I'm so happy. Today's mood is strawberry-flavored, too.]

[June 7, 2016. Today is my birthday. Sara braided a ring for me out of grass and told me she'd marry me one day. I swear I'm going to make it big enough to buy her the most expensive ring in the world.]

[January 1, 2017. It's the new year. Sara gave me chocolates! I want to eat them so badly, but they're a token of her love, so I have to save them forever.]

...

After reading only a handful of them, Hannah lost all desire to keep going.

No wonder that whenever Ethan sneaked into the study late at night, she would hear faint sounds of laughter coming from inside.

Even after working through an entire night, he would emerge the next morning looking energized, with a bright smile and a sparkle in his eyes.

So, these were the memories he had cherished all along. Memories he had shared with Sara.

Hannah couldn't help a bitter, sarcastic laugh. She had always assumed Ethan had simply grown tired of their relationship and started seeing his female assistant on a whim.

She had never imagined that Sara was the mysterious ex-girlfriend he'd refused to talk about. His feelings for Sara weren't some passing fling. He had been carrying a torch for her all this time.

"So, what does my ten years with him mean to him?"

The question surfaced in Hannah's mind, but by then, it no longer mattered. Whatever they had once shared was over.

She shook her head, grabbed her suitcase, and walked out of the apartment without looking back. She checked into a hotel near the airport and slept peacefully for the first time in ages.

When she woke up, she casually submitted her resignation through the company HR portal before heading to brush her teeth.

Soon, her phone chimed with a notification: [Resignation Request Approved.]

Normally, any message Hannah sent to Ethan took at least three or four hours to receive a response, assuming he responded at all.

She had even been prepared to call him personally to make sure her resignation was processed. She hadn't expected him to approve it within seconds.

As she wondered why he'd suddenly become so efficient, a photo was sent to her phone. It showed Sara and Ethan at a luxury boutique, trying on wedding gowns, the entire picture dripping with provocation.

Sara: [So what if you were with Ethan for ten years? In the end, I'm the one getting the marriage certificate and taking wedding photos with him.]

Hannah let out a cold laugh.

No wonder Ethan had approved her resignation so quickly. He was busy playing groom and couldn't spare even a second for her.

Whenever he was with Sara, everything else seemed to disappear from his world. That was why he had stood Hannah up countless times before.

In the past, his neglect would have crushed her. She would even have wondered whether she'd somehow done something wrong.

Now, however, she almost felt grateful for it. If Ethan hadn't been so distracted, her resignation would never have gone through so smoothly.

After all, as one of Turner Group's key founders, Hannah had played an indispensable role in building the company into what it was.

Clients specifically sought out her distinctive design work, and more than 70 percent of the company's major contracts depended directly on her concepts and proposals.

Under normal circumstances, Ethan would never have let her leave without squeezing every bit of value out of her.

Hannah heaved a sigh of relief and dismissed Sara's pathetic taunts.

After completing the exit formalities, she walked out of her office and was immediately greeted by the loud, shameless chatter of her colleagues.

The man standing in her kitchen wasn't Rhys.It was Ethan. He was wearing the hoodie Hannah had bought for him years ago, shortly after she graduated, as he carefully placed the final dish on the dining table. The moment he saw Hannah, Ethan froze before forcing a smile."Hannah, you're back. You must be exhausted from work. I made some of your favorite dishes. Don't worry. I don't mean anything by this. I just wanted to say a proper goodbye. Didn't you use to love the food I made?"Hannah glanced at the table piled with spicy dishes and felt absolutely nothing. It was true that she had once loved spicy food more than anything.Back then, even if Ethan just whipped up a simple dish with chili crisp, she would eat every bite with delight. But apparently, he'd forgotten. Or perhaps he'd never cared enough to remember.Over the years, Hannah had poured her blood, sweat, and countless sleepless nights into building his company. The endless client dinners and brutal workloads had ev

With Rhys holding her close, Hannah nodded gently.During her three months overseas, Rhys had taken exceptional care of her and had always respected and admired her talent. As it happened, she had grown fond of him too. So, when he confessed his feelings, she said yes, and the two of them officially started dating. When Rhys later learned that Hannah had once shared a matching bracelet with Ethan, he became so jealous that he insisted on taking her out to get a new pair for them.Neither of them had imagined it would lead to a misunderstanding like this.Ethan stared in disbelief at the way Rhys held Hannah. After a long pause, he demanded, "What did you say? Girlfriend? You two are dating? No way. I don't believe it. Hannah loved me so much. How could she possibly fall for someone else?"Then, as though he'd suddenly thought of an explanation, Ethan gave a relieved laugh."I get it! Hannah, you hired this guy to make me jealous, didn't you? That's quite a convincing performance

The moment Ethan saw Hannah, his eyes lit up. He jogged over to her side and caught her hand."Hannah, why did you block and delete me? And ever since you left, I've been posting photos with Sara on social media every day. I posted so many photos of us together. Why weren't you jealous at all?"You used to hate seeing Sara and me get close. Back then, I merely shared a cup of coffee with her and used the same straw, and you were so furious that you flipped the table. Why aren't you reacting now?"Hannah looked at him in confusion. "Yes, I flipped the table. But didn't you accuse me of being possessive, having a dirty mind, and seeing something filthy in everything?"Didn't you insist that you and Sara were strictly boss and employee and tell me to stop overthinking? Didn't you always want me to be more open-minded and generous? Now that I'm finally giving you exactly what you wanted, you should be happy."Seeing how completely unfazed she was, Ethan tightened his grip on her hand.

Before long, Ethan's once-thriving company became entangled in lawsuits and sank deep into a mountain of debt. Its stock price plummeted off a cliff. As for Ethan's grand threat to "blacklist Hannah from the industry," it had become nothing more than a joke. How could a company that couldn't even save itself, with its reputation in ruins, have any say over who remained in the industry? With nothing standing in her way, Hannah quickly established herself at Ernest's company. A string of brilliant design proposals delivered exceptional results, and her career continued to climb. To her, that so-called blacklisting was nothing more than a passing breeze. When Ernest learned about her failed relationship, he even took it upon himself to play matchmaker, hoping to help her move on."Hannah, what do you think of Rhys from the HR department?" he asked.Hannah was caught off guard.Rhys was a relatively new HR manager at the company. Though young, he was remarkably mature and capable,

"What?"Ethan's voice shot up into a shrill screech, like a cat whose tail had just been stepped on."Have you lost your mind? 50 percent? Why don't you just rob a bank? Do you really think this company can't survive without you?"Hearing his hysterical shouting, Hannah merely shook her head.It seemed he'd truly forgotten. Forgotten every promise he'd made when they first started the company. Forgotten everything he'd once said while holding her hand and swearing that they would build the business together. But Hannah still remembered those early days.Only a few months after the company was founded, they had already run out of money because they lacked a clear understanding of the market and had no viable business model. The corporate account was empty, and the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. It was Hannah who sold her parents' house, the property she had intended to rely on in her later years, and poured every penny into the company. She used the money to pay dozens

"Greedy? Me?" Hannah snorted, pointing at herself."I suppose Ethan has sheltered you so thoroughly that you have no idea how ordinary people actually live. And you certainly don't understand how ridiculous those words sound coming from you."She adjusted her Bluetooth earbud and continued with a scoff, "When I was building this company from the ground up with Ethan, I scrimped and saved, eating boiled vegetables with a little vinegar and soy sauce day after day."Even the lipstick I wore came from the dollar store. I drove that old Volkswagen for more than ten years, and the air conditioning barely worked."I was drenched in sweat every summer and freezing every winter. When I once suggested saving up for a modest car, do you know what Ethan said?"Hannah paused, then mimicked his old tone with a mocking smile. "He said, 'Hannah, we're in the middle of building a startup. How can you be so materialistic?"'Do you have any idea how much even a modest car costs once you add all th
