Chapter 6

Autor: Bright Lights
They were all love letters Hannah had written to Ethan.

The letters took her back five years. A particularly severe strain of seasonal flu had swept through the city, and Ethan had caught it. His fever had spiked to an alarming 106 degrees, and he was rushed to the ER for emergency treatment.

When hours passed without his fever coming down, Ethan, delirious with the heat, became convinced he was dying. He clung tightly to Hannah's hand, tears slipping from the corners of his eyes as he mumbled that he hadn't listened to enough of her love letters.

He begged her to keep reading them aloud, telling her that if he died, she could burn the letters at his grave so he wouldn't have to be alone.

To keep him conscious long enough for the medical team to treat him, Hannah fought back her tears and agreed. She grabbed a notebook and a pen, writing down every small, precious memory from their years together and reading each letter aloud as she wrote.

By the time Ethan's fever finally broke, Hannah had gone through ten pens. Her index finger was swollen and raw from gripping the pen so tightly, and the pages were stained with both her tears and tiny spots of blood.

When Ethan woke up and saw her right hand swollen and cramped into a stiff claw after hours of writing, tears immediately welled up in his eyes.

He threw his arms around her, sobbing as he swore that he would cherish her for the rest of his life, grow old by her side, and never let anything hurt her again.

But ever since Sara had entered his life, he had been hurting Hannah over and over again. Not a single one of those promises had survived.

Hannah took a deep breath, but instead of putting the letters away, she dropped them straight into the trash. Ethan's promises had expired a long time ago. Keeping the letters would do nothing but make her feel disgusted with herself.

Once she finished packing her files, Hannah looked around the nearly empty study and then down at her suitcase, which wasn't even half full.

A bitter, self-deprecating laugh escaped her.

All these years, Ethan was constantly complaining about the pressure of running the company and how tight the cash flow was.

He urged her to save every penny of her salary for their wedding, reminding her that they would need money for the venue, the engagement ring, a down payment on a house, and renovations.

Hannah had foolishly believed every word and cut costs wherever she could.

On sweltering summer days and during freezing blizzards when even two heavy coats couldn't keep the cold out, she stubbornly wore the same cheap flats she'd ordered online, even when they pinched her toes.

Whenever she ordered takeout, she spent endless hours joining coupon groups and waiting for flash sales just to shave a dollar or two off a discounted meal, usually settling for cheap, prepackaged lunch specials.

Every penny she saved went straight to Ethan. And what did he do with it?

He turned around and bought everything on his luxury wish list. He splurged on high-end gaming rigs, wore a designer watch, and presented himself on social media as a wildly successful, glamorous tycoon.

Hannah let out another bitter laugh. She had been blinded by Ethan's empty promises of marriage. Sacrificing her youth and health for a man who didn't even love her had been a complete waste.

If she had invested that same time, money, and energy in herself, she could have become someone infinitely better.

Shaking her head, Hannah forced herself to stop dwelling on a past that couldn't be changed. She grabbed her suitcase and turned to leave when a sharp metallic clatter sounded behind her.

She looked back and saw that one of the suitcase wheels had bumped into the heavy metal safe tucked away in the corner.

It was Ethan's most prized possession. Hannah still remembered the Category 5 hurricane that had hit their city years ago, shattering the apartment windows into deadly shards.

Even then, Ethan had risked his life, ignoring his own safety to drag that safe somewhere secure. No one knew what was inside.

Hannah had been curious about it once. Since the safe appeared to use only a four-digit PIN, she'd tried countless combinations.

She had entered the date they started dating, her birthday, Ethan's birthday, his mother's birthday, and even the day his parents finalized their divorce. Not one combination had worked.

At one point, driven purely by curiosity, Hannah had even hired a professional locksmith to get a look inside.

But the moment he saw the safe, he packed up his tools and prepared to leave. No matter how much money she offered, he simply shook his head.

When she finally managed to persuade him to explain, the locksmith told her that the unimpressive little safe, no larger than a makeup case, was actually a masterpiece of security engineering.

Its locking mechanism used imported, military-grade nano-encryption technology, while the outer shell was forged from a space-grade alloy that was virtually impossible to destroy.

The safe had clearly cost a fortune, and Ethan had spared no expense protecting whatever was inside. Realizing that neither persuasion nor brute force would get her anywhere, Hannah had eventually given up.

Throughout the entire decade she had been with Ethan, she had never discovered what the safe contained. Now that she was finally leaving for good, a lingering curiosity, or perhaps just a sudden hunch, made her walk over.

She hesitated before entering the date of Ethan breaking up with his ex-girlfriend. She wasn't expecting anything since Ethan had never mentioned this ex in front of her.

If she hadn't overheard one of his fraternity brothers drunkenly rambling about it years ago, Hannah wouldn't have even known he'd dated anyone before her.

Then came a sharp beep. The safe clicked open.

Hannah froze, wondering who on earth this ex-girlfriend was. Ethan had guarded her so fiercely that he had once risked his life to protect her memories during a hurricane.

As the heavy lid slowly swung open, Hannah's eyes widened in shock.

The man standing in her kitchen wasn't Rhys.It was Ethan. He was wearing the hoodie Hannah had bought for him years ago, shortly after she graduated, as he carefully placed the final dish on the dining table. The moment he saw Hannah, Ethan froze before forcing a smile."Hannah, you're back. You must be exhausted from work. I made some of your favorite dishes. Don't worry. I don't mean anything by this. I just wanted to say a proper goodbye. Didn't you use to love the food I made?"Hannah glanced at the table piled with spicy dishes and felt absolutely nothing. It was true that she had once loved spicy food more than anything.Back then, even if Ethan just whipped up a simple dish with chili crisp, she would eat every bite with delight. But apparently, he'd forgotten. Or perhaps he'd never cared enough to remember.Over the years, Hannah had poured her blood, sweat, and countless sleepless nights into building his company. The endless client dinners and brutal workloads had ev

With Rhys holding her close, Hannah nodded gently.During her three months overseas, Rhys had taken exceptional care of her and had always respected and admired her talent. As it happened, she had grown fond of him too. So, when he confessed his feelings, she said yes, and the two of them officially started dating. When Rhys later learned that Hannah had once shared a matching bracelet with Ethan, he became so jealous that he insisted on taking her out to get a new pair for them.Neither of them had imagined it would lead to a misunderstanding like this.Ethan stared in disbelief at the way Rhys held Hannah. After a long pause, he demanded, "What did you say? Girlfriend? You two are dating? No way. I don't believe it. Hannah loved me so much. How could she possibly fall for someone else?"Then, as though he'd suddenly thought of an explanation, Ethan gave a relieved laugh."I get it! Hannah, you hired this guy to make me jealous, didn't you? That's quite a convincing performance

The moment Ethan saw Hannah, his eyes lit up. He jogged over to her side and caught her hand."Hannah, why did you block and delete me? And ever since you left, I've been posting photos with Sara on social media every day. I posted so many photos of us together. Why weren't you jealous at all?"You used to hate seeing Sara and me get close. Back then, I merely shared a cup of coffee with her and used the same straw, and you were so furious that you flipped the table. Why aren't you reacting now?"Hannah looked at him in confusion. "Yes, I flipped the table. But didn't you accuse me of being possessive, having a dirty mind, and seeing something filthy in everything?"Didn't you insist that you and Sara were strictly boss and employee and tell me to stop overthinking? Didn't you always want me to be more open-minded and generous? Now that I'm finally giving you exactly what you wanted, you should be happy."Seeing how completely unfazed she was, Ethan tightened his grip on her hand.

Before long, Ethan's once-thriving company became entangled in lawsuits and sank deep into a mountain of debt. Its stock price plummeted off a cliff. As for Ethan's grand threat to "blacklist Hannah from the industry," it had become nothing more than a joke. How could a company that couldn't even save itself, with its reputation in ruins, have any say over who remained in the industry? With nothing standing in her way, Hannah quickly established herself at Ernest's company. A string of brilliant design proposals delivered exceptional results, and her career continued to climb. To her, that so-called blacklisting was nothing more than a passing breeze. When Ernest learned about her failed relationship, he even took it upon himself to play matchmaker, hoping to help her move on."Hannah, what do you think of Rhys from the HR department?" he asked.Hannah was caught off guard.Rhys was a relatively new HR manager at the company. Though young, he was remarkably mature and capable,

"What?"Ethan's voice shot up into a shrill screech, like a cat whose tail had just been stepped on."Have you lost your mind? 50 percent? Why don't you just rob a bank? Do you really think this company can't survive without you?"Hearing his hysterical shouting, Hannah merely shook her head.It seemed he'd truly forgotten. Forgotten every promise he'd made when they first started the company. Forgotten everything he'd once said while holding her hand and swearing that they would build the business together. But Hannah still remembered those early days.Only a few months after the company was founded, they had already run out of money because they lacked a clear understanding of the market and had no viable business model. The corporate account was empty, and the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. It was Hannah who sold her parents' house, the property she had intended to rely on in her later years, and poured every penny into the company. She used the money to pay dozens

"Greedy? Me?" Hannah snorted, pointing at herself."I suppose Ethan has sheltered you so thoroughly that you have no idea how ordinary people actually live. And you certainly don't understand how ridiculous those words sound coming from you."She adjusted her Bluetooth earbud and continued with a scoff, "When I was building this company from the ground up with Ethan, I scrimped and saved, eating boiled vegetables with a little vinegar and soy sauce day after day."Even the lipstick I wore came from the dollar store. I drove that old Volkswagen for more than ten years, and the air conditioning barely worked."I was drenched in sweat every summer and freezing every winter. When I once suggested saving up for a modest car, do you know what Ethan said?"Hannah paused, then mimicked his old tone with a mocking smile. "He said, 'Hannah, we're in the middle of building a startup. How can you be so materialistic?"'Do you have any idea how much even a modest car costs once you add all th
