Chapter 2

He replied. [You should’ve done this a long time ago, but it’s not too late. I’ll sort out everything for you, my dearest daughter.]

The moment I received Dad’s message, I finally let out a breath of relief, and strangely enough, I felt touched.

Back then, I had refused an arranged marriage and had recklessly run away from home. Then, I met Matteo and married him. Dad never attended the wedding, but over the years, he stopped blaming me for my youthful impulsiveness.

Matteo suddenly sighed. “I’ve always just been after a bit of excitement with other women out there, but I’ve cut ties with all of them. Now, I only stay by your side. You’re the only person I truly love.”

Was that so? Then what was he doing in the study just now? Did he deserve the courage it took for me to give up everything just to gamble on his sincerity?

I once thought meeting Matteo was the luckiest thing that had ever happened to me. However, on the night of our wedding, I received intimate photos of him and Riley.

At the time, I thought someone was jealous of our happiness and trying to sabotage us. Yet, I waited all night for Matteo to come home, and no explanation or apology came. That was when I understood that the love Matteo showed before marriage had never even amounted to one.

Matteo continued smiling as he said, “It’s been eight months. Are you still hung up on those unimportant people? So, how about I take you overseas to get some air? Or we could visit your parents.”

Instead, I asked, “What are you planning to tell Riley?”

“Compared to my wife’s feelings, she means nothing.” Matteo still wore that same smile, though now it looked stiff.

I almost laughed at his words and asked, “How exactly do you love me? Would you give up Riley for me? If you can–”

“I can.”

For a brief second, warmth spread through my chest. However, I came back to my senses just as quickly. Without Riley, there would only be another woman after her. Matteo would never truly settle down.

Slowly, I pushed his hand away and turned to leave.

“Sofia.” Matteo’s expression darkened, and his restrained anger slipped into his voice. “There are countless women who would kill to have your place, women more shameless and desperate than you could imagine. So what exactly do I need to do before you’ll finally believe that I love you?”

I never thought he would say something like that. I laughed several times, hard enough that I almost lost my breath. I laughed at myself for believing him and wasting six years of my life on him. Yet, even after all those years, there was still a tiny part of me holding onto hope that maybe one day Matteo would finally wake up and return to the way we used to be.

I never cared about his money. All I wanted was his love, his heart, and to spend the rest of his life together. However, at that moment, Matteo simply looked at me with cold indifference. All the pain and bitterness I carried stemmed from a man I could never hold onto.

Amidst the tension, the butler suddenly entered the room. He glanced at me cautiously before speaking to Matteo.

“Sir, someone is here to see you. It’s… Riley…”

Matteo instinctively looked toward me, but before he could stop anything, Riley had appeared in front of us. She was dressed elegantly, looking every bit the gentle woman.

“I-I didn’t mean to interrupt. Matteo, I missed you.”

Matteo hurried over to support her.

“Why are you here? Didn’t I tell you– Forget it. How are you feeling?”

Riley shook her head. “The baby and I both missed you. The staff at the villa kept stopping me from seeing you, so I snuck out. Can you make them leave me alone?”

Matteo hesitated for a moment before stepping aside to make a phone call. The second he left, Riley looked at me with malice, and the sweetness on her face instantly disappeared.

“A woman trapped in a dead marriage will always end up abandoned by her husband. Leave on your own accord, and we can both live peacefully. But if you refuse…”

She paused, a smug smile curling across her lips as she rested a hand over her stomach.

“Men look for women for two reasons: children and pleasure. Anyone can give them children, and pleasure can be found anywhere. There are younger, prettier, and more obedient women than I am, but none of them can satisfy Matteo the way I do. And now, I can even take your place.”

Suddenly, Riley slapped herself across the face and cried out, “I never tried to hurt you! Why do you have to force my hand? I’d give up everything for Matteo. Please just let me see him once a month.”

Matteo returned just in time to witness the scene. Assuming I had bullied her, his expression immediately turned ugly.

“Sofia!” he snapped. “How dare you hit her?”

The moment I stepped outside, I understood what was happening: Matteo had been surrounded. Caleb and his men had sealed off the entire area, and there was no way out for Matteo anymore.Matteo pulled out a gun and pressed it firmly against my lower back.“Let’s go, Sof. Don’t look back.”Every step I took was small. From a distance, Caleb immediately got out of his car when he saw me. Even from so far away, I could make out the stubble on his face.“Caleb, I didn’t touch her,” Matteo raised his voice. “You can relax now.”“Let Sofia go, and we can talk this through,” Caleb said, half-threatening and half-trying to negotiate. He was clearly afraid I would get hurt in the process. “Or do you want to drag the entire Cross family down with you?”“The Cross family? It has nothing to do with me anymore,” Matteo cursed under his breath.I tried to speak calmly. “Matteo, people can only atone for their sins if they’re alive. Don’t take this to extremes.”Matteo suddenly smiled. “Sof u

Matteo didn’t refuse. Instead, he closed the car door and draped his coat over my shoulders. When the people came looking for me, Matteo drove them away with a sharp reprimand. I stayed curled up in his arms, trembling uncontrollably, tears soaking through his clothes in large patches.Matteo closed his eyes as he recalled the memory. “If you could go back in time, would you still choose to come to me for help?”“No,” I answered without hesitation.I would rather die in that alley than ever step into Matteo’s car again.“You sure are heartless,” Matteo said, tossing a gun toward me. “Be a little more heartless, will you? Let me die by your hand.”I picked up the gun, aimed it straight at him, and pulled the trigger with a click. The barrel was empty.I lowered the gun slightly, meeting Matteo’s anguished eyes. For a split second, something tight twisted in my chest, but it faded quickly.“I can let you go, but stay here with me for three days.” Afraid I wouldn’t agree to it, h

The moment I stepped onto that ship, there would be no turning back.Seeing my hesitation, Matteo pulled out a gun and gave a helpless laugh. “Sofia, are you coming with me or staying here?”I felt a lump in my throat. I couldn’t breathe or even swallow.“When did you develop a habit of stealing other men’s wives, Matteo? My wife scares easily and has trouble making decisions. Why don’t you ask me directly instead?”Caleb’s voice came from inside the cabin.Matteo didn’t even turn around. He couldn’t spare Caleb so much as a glance.“Name your price,” Matteo said. “What would it take to give Sofia back to me?”My heart skipped a beat.“The Warrens are no longer content with the domestic market,” Matteo continued. “And the Crosses’ influence is great abroad. Even though the board removed me, I’ve kept plenty hidden over the years. I shall hand over our overseas businesses in the three countries.” I remembered Matteo once telling me that his real power and business empire were

When I opened my eyes, I realized I was tied up, and someone had changed me into a brand-new wedding dress.“Sof, you’re awake.” Matteo stood beside me in a tailored suit, holding a glass of water to my lips as he said, “In two hours, we’ll finally be together forever.”“Are you insane? This is kidnapping!”Matteo grabbed my jaw and forced the water into my mouth. I was terrified it had been drugged, so I spat everything back out immediately.“Sof, I told you to come home so many times, but you refused every time. I had no choice but to bring you back myself. Everything’s already arranged. We’ll have new identities and live in Canadia. Don’t worry. The money in my trust fund is more than enough for us to live however we want.”“I don’t want that!” I screamed at him, my eyes burning red. “Whatever I felt for you ended on our wedding night!”“You’re lying!” Matteo cupped my face tightly. “It’s been years, and every time this came up, you always looked at me like you still wanted my

Before she could even get close, the man kicked her away again. The force of it made my heart skip a beat. What kind of man had I fallen in love with before?Riley collapsed onto the floor, coughing violently. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t get back up. Caleb waved a hand, and several men immediately stepped forward. They carried Riley away and silently understood his order to deal with everything cleanly.“Sof, look. I told you those women out there mean nothing to me, but I would never treat you like this. Come back to me,” Matteo continued to tempt me, still refusing to give up. Just then, his assistant pushed past the bodyguards standing at the entrance.“Mr. Matteo, this is the Mr. Caleb Warren you’ve been trying to work with!”The smile on Matteo’s face disappeared. Having never been so defeated in his life, he walked out in a daze. Some of his men wanted to follow after him, but Caleb stopped them. What else could a man, who had been crushed in every possible

Holding a wine glass, I moved through the crowd of wealthy elites. Surprisingly, Riley was there too, but she looked terrible. Her whole body was tense, and she looked afraid of me.In the middle of the laughter and clinking glasses, my eyes accidentally met Matteo’s. He froze for a second before immediately dropping his drink and rushing toward me.“Sof, you’re here? Thank God. I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Let’s go home, okay?” His eyes lit up with joy as he grabbed my hand, ready to pull me away.I instantly shook him off. “We’re surrounded by important people. Don’t embarrass yourself.”“Important people?” Matteo said with pride, “Other than being Mrs. Cross, what other identity do you even have? Don’t worry. As long as you come back to me, everything will be fine again. Sof, I’ll make up for how badly I treated you before.”“You can’t fix the past, no matter how hard you try. Watch your words, Mr. Matteo.”“Mr. Matteo?” Matteo let out a dry laugh. “Since when have yo
