Chapter 2

Author: Tonya Hugh
The next morning, Winona stuffed a brand-new suit into my arms. “Zephyr’s fever was too high yesterday. It’s not like I didn’t want to come back. I swear that nothing happened between Jacob and me. I can show you the security footage.”

“There’s no need. I trust you.” I shook my head calmly.

Winona stiffened up, and her expression remained sour. After a moment, she dragged me into her car. “Let’s go get a couple’s tattoo to show our love to the world.”

I froze. “I’m allergic to tattoos.”

Winona did not lift her foot from the gas pedal. “You won’t have an allergic reaction. Jacob’s friend owns the shop. He’s a doctor. He won’t harm anyone.”

The moment the car stopped, she dragged me into the shop. “Jacob has already sent you the sample. Tattoo it on his face.”

I turned my face away. “Don’t touch my face.”

No one listened. They pinned me down, and it hurt so much that my knuckles turned white.

A long time passed, and I looked into the mirror. I read the words that were covering my whole face.

[I’m the affair partner]

I grabbed Winona. “Do you have to humiliate me like this, Winona?!”

Winona was stunned before shaking my hand off. “Jacob just sent the wrong sample. Stop kicking up a fuss over nothing. He has already apologized to me.”

So, just because Jacob made a mistake, they could pretend nothing ever happened.

I grabbed her waist this time. “This is my face!”

Winona frowned in faint annoyance. “You’re a man. Since when have you become so superficial? It’s just your face. No matter what happens to you, I will always love you. Am I supposed to yell at him and make him feel guilty forever? He’s already having a hard time alone.”

I was so angry that I raised my fist, only to see one word on her neck.

[Awakening]

I was stunned.

Jacob had a word at the same part of his neck.

[Love]

Combined, it would form the phrase “Love Awakening.”

What about me?

Was I the shallow one?

Winona struck my hand and dragged me out. “Stop making a fuss already. It’s Zephyr’s birthday today. We have to go.”

I kept fighting back. “Winona, do you want people to laugh at me?!”

She just ignored me. “Stop it already. With me around, no one will dare to treat you badly. Once it’s over, I’ll have someone get rid of the tattoo for you.”

I grabbed my knees tightly, and I could feel my heart bleeding.

Ever since I got married to Winona, I suffered every day.

The moment we got out, the mocking words got louder. I could even hear grating laughter.

“Oh my! So, he’s the affair partner! Even though he’s been with Winona for so many years, he still hasn’t managed to help Winona conceive an heir, right?”

“He’s just trying to marry rich and climb the social ladder. How disgusting.”

“I need to take a picture so that my friend can do it too.”

“No. I’m not.” I ducked my head as I retorted, and the veins on the backs of my hands bulged. Instinctively, I turned to Winona, only to find her pursing her lips. She then turned to pick up Zephyr. She cooed at him while listening to Jacob’s words of jealousy.

They were the ones who looked like a family.

I suppressed my instinct to hit them. I did my best to hold my tears back.

My mind returned to the time I was in university. I often suffered from allergy reactions, and my coursemates insulted me.

However, no matter how horrible the insults were, they would always apologize to me the next day. Meanwhile, Winona’s body was always covered in wounds of various sizes. When I saw them, she would throw herself into my arms and whine that it hurt. She would also let her hands start wandering around my body.

She had changed a long time ago.

When I snapped back from my daze, I found Zephyr collapsed beside me while cradling his stomach. “It hurts! I told you that I can’t eat it! Why did you force me to eat it?!”

Before I could react, Winona had already rushed over and slapped me in the face. Her nails scratched my chin. “You’re horrible, Shaun! How could you hurt a child?! Jacob has already swallowed his pride so that you can come back to my side. I already owe them enough! It’s no wonder that you kept pretending that you have no desires. It’s because you’ve always wanted to kill Zephyr!”

I collapsed to the floor, writhing in pain. I swallowed the blood in my mouth.

Jacob knelt beside me with Zephyr in his arms. “If you don’t like us, just say so. I’ll leave with Zephyr right now. I’ve spent all these years raising him. Just spare us already.”

I shook my head. “I didn’t do it. The cameras can show you.”

“That’s enough! Jacob is kind! Are you saying that he set you up?! You just hate him and can’t bear to see them live good lives.”

Then, Winona stomped on my hand and crushed my fingers. Blood spread on the floor. “I must have been blind to have chosen you. Enough with the act already. Once you’re done, leave!”

I did not take it. “This is meaningless, Winona.”She simply dusted off the ring. “There is! If you don’t like this one, I’ll get another one. Let’s start again, okay?”“No,” I stated firmly. Her breathing stilled, and she looked like she was suffocating. It was as if there were hands around her throat.“I understand.”She became even quieter but refused to let me leave her sight. When she went to work or on business trips, she always insisted on bringing me along, no matter how far it was. Then, she started flying everywhere to look for doctors for me, be it in the country or abroad. All she got was the same result. I could never stand up again, and my hand would never heal either. I had long since accepted this, but Winona refused to give up. She broke down outside the ward in depression and agony. “Why do things have to end up like this between us?”I could hear clear slaps echoing in the corridor, along with her stifled sobs. The doctors and nurses said that

Winona was flabbergasted. She opened her mouth but found herself unable to say anything. In the end, she hung her head in defeat. She no longer asked me for anything and only stood in the shadows as my tool. Even when she spoke to me, she did so hesitantly. “Dear, the sun is out today. I’ll bring you out for a walk.”Before I could answer, she had already wrapped a scarf around my neck and carefully applied tone-up cream on my face. However, normal makeup could not hide the tattoo on my face. Winona could only stubbornly apply it over and over. In the end, she broke down in tears. “Why can’t I hide it…? Why is it still there…?”I turned my face away impassively. “Stop it already.”“No! I have to hide it. Once you’re better, we’ll get rid of the tattoo.”I stared at the floor calmly. “I don’t care.”“But I do!”She grabbed my shoulders. It looked like she was using all her strength to do so.“Didn’t you say that you want to go out? Let’s go, then.”Her shoulders slumped

When I was pushing my wheelchair, I suddenly felt the resistance ease, so I ducked my head and did not dare look up. “Thank you.”Then, I heard a familiar breathing pattern, and I thought that I was hearing things. The woman slowly squatted down and grabbed my hands. Her eyes were bloodshot. “You really are alive.”My heart started racing, and goosebumps broke out on my skin. I started rolling the wheelchair so that I could leave. “You have the wrong person.”In the next second, she grabbed my waist tightly and forced me to look into her eyes. “I didn’t. You’re Shaun Zimmer, my husband.”As I stared at the familiar face, I tensed up. “I’m not.”Winona’s breathing froze, but she still had her subordinate stuff me into her car. “Let’s go home, dear.”The car moved steadily, and when we were back, she had her subordinate put me gently on the couch. With a trembling hand, she touched my face. “I’ve been going to all the cities you loved, dear. I wasn’t expecting to find you. Thank

All Winona could do was to use alcohol to numb herself from day to night. Then, Jacob brought Zephyr over. “You know about it, don’t you, Winona? I was just too scared. That’s why I did it… You won’t blame me, right?”Winona sneered. “You were too scared?”Jacob pursed his lips and stepped forward to speak in an even softer voice, “I really didn’t do it on purpose. But since he’s no longer around, why don’t we…?”“Why don’t we what?” There was no warmth in Winona’s voice. “Are you saying that you’re willing to be with me and help me move past this? Or are you going to tell me that Zephyr needs a proper family?”Jacob turned pale, as if Winona had hit a sore spot. “Winona, I really do love you…”“Love?” Winona sneered and stomped on his chest. “Is your version of loving me killing my husband so that you can marry me? I must have been blind to think that you were kind!”She kicked him down.“You’re horrible! Don’t bully Daddy!” Zephyr rushed over, and she frowned as she kicked h

“What did you say? Say it again!” She clenched her fists. Her assistant watched her for a bit and stayed silent. Winona started shouting, “That’s impossible! I sent him to Historia City to rest! I got the best physiotherapist for him!”In her desperation, she grabbed Jacob’s collar. “Was the surgery a success or not?!”Jacob stumbled and avoided her gaze. “O-Of course it was. Don’t you trust me?”Winona’s heart plummeted, and she sneered. When she called the rehabilitation center in Historia City, she found that Shaun had never been there. “As if I’d believe you. Serenity, get the car ready. We’re going back right now.”On the way back, Winona’s heart raced with unprecedented fear, and she stood for a long while at the door before summoning her courage and opening it. “I’m back, dear. Can we stop fighting…”The house was silent. It was still decorated in the way Shaun loved, and nothing was missing. She rushed into the bedroom. “Are you still angry, dear?” The silenc

Jacob still felt sad and refused to forgive me. So, I was forced to keep slapping myself at the company entrance to earn his forgiveness. The passersby could kick me whenever they walked past me. Some even treated me like I was some kind of tourist attraction. My photo was taken multiple times. My eyes were red and dry, and I even felt like it was hard to breathe. On the eighth day, I had appendicitis and was admitted into the hospital, so I called Winona. “I don’t have any money. Could you hire a caretaker for me?”There was laughter in the background. After a long while, Winona snapped at me, “That’s enough. You’re in a ward that costs thousands of dollars a night. Why are you still dissatisfied? You weren’t forced to continue begging for forgiveness because Jacob is kind. I’m busy. Stop calling me.”I clutched my phone and tasted blood. My entire body ached. I clenched my teeth and decided to fight for myself one last time. I reported Jacob for falsifying his degree and ha
