Chapter 1

Winona tore the copy to shreds, and in her hysteria, she shouted, “But this isn’t what I want! I want the Shaun Zimmer who will cry, laugh, and be jealous! Give me back my husband!”

She grabbed me and started pleading with me in a choked-up voice.

I picked up the torn copy and put the pieces back together. “It took me a long time to copy down the family rules until I got to this part. Now that you’ve ruined it, I’ll have to start again.”

Winona just smacked the pieces from my hand, and her breathing turned hurried and chaotic. “Shaun, I’m talking to you. Could you stop ignoring me?! I was the center of your world back then!”

I rubbed the scar on my arm and could not understand why she was so angry.

She was the one who wanted me to behave.

I said nothing and simply looked down at the ring on her ring finger.

Winona hid her hand awkwardly, and there was a hint of frustration she could not hide in her voice. “That’s Jacob’s birthday wish. I couldn’t say no. It’s just a small thing. Don’t hold it against him.”

I stared at my own finger where there was the imprint of a ring.

It hurt and itched.

We dated for five years, then were married for another five.

I treated my ring as a treasure and refused to take it off, but Winona thought that it was a burden and kept her ring in a box. It sat there collecting dust for years.

No matter how I tried to win her favor and convince her to wear it, she refused to budge. Instead, she called me childish and lame.

In the end, she readily wore someone else’s ring.

This marriage was truly just a one-man show on my part.

I just grunted calmly and asked nothing else.

She wanted to continue defending herself, but I interrupted her. I asked, “What do you want for dinner? Once you’re done, I need to continue copying the family rules.”

Winona’s chest heaved, and she started shouting, “Stop copying them! Shaun, are you my husband or my servant?! Aside from driving me crazy, you’re accomplishing nothing else by doing this! Or do you really think that you’re a good husband by doing this?”

Driving her crazy?

When I went to the company to settle all her troubles, she was giving birth to Jacob’s baby in another country.

It was only when Jacob brought the child to us that I found out just how stupid I had been.

I had grabbed her wrist in a vice-tight grip and demanded an answer, only for her to say that I was a jealous man and could not even tolerate a child.

She then threw that dictionary-thick family rulebook at me and told me to copy it down.

I was doing it, but she was still making a fuss.

I asked her in confusion, “Don’t you like what I’m doing?”

Winona felt frustrated, but in the end, she melted into grief and helplessness. “I’m sorry, dear. I shouldn’t have said that, but I just couldn’t control myself.”

She hugged my waist and started trembling. “I really do love you. I’ll cut down on contact with Jacob from now on. I really do want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

I nodded but gave no other reaction.

Right after Winona sighed in relief, she got a phone call.

“Winona, Zephyr is sick and wants you. Could you drop by for a bit?”

Winona clenched her phone tightly and cast me a hesitant glance. “Dear, it’s not easy for Jacob to raise a child alone…”

I tensed up and clenched my fists. Then, I asked in a hoarse voice. “If I say no?”

Jacob started apologizing in a show of consideration. “It’s okay, Winona, your husband is more important. No matter how hard it is, I’ll take good care of Zephyr alone.”

Winona’s face instantly turned pale, and she growled at me. “Why are you being so aggressive? That’s my son too! You can’t be a father. That’s why you have no idea how hard it is for Jacob to raise Zephyr. Am I supposed to just ignore them and let them both die?”

I clenched my fists even harder, and my breathing turned labored as my eyes stung.

Did I not want to be a father? Was I sterile?

No. It was her.

On the second day of our marriage, I resigned and stayed home to take care of her because I wanted to have a child with her.

I trained hard and took all sorts of supplements, but she never gave it any thought and just kept telling me that we should let things happen on their own.

I was wondering why she was not anxious about it. It was because she already had a family elsewhere!

I was the only one who thought that I was doing her wrong and had felt guilty about it for years.

When she saw my chest heaving, Winona reached out to me but stopped short. “Dear, I didn’t get pregnant because I wanted you to pay attention to me. But it’s hard for Jacob to take care of Zephyr. I have to go.”

She left me standing there watching as she made her quick exit.

I started trembling nonstop as I remembered the medicine I found in the bedside drawer.

I started crying and laughing.

She kept calling me a husband, but she had been giving sterilization drugs for years.

Was this the love she mentioned?

I did not take it. “This is meaningless, Winona.”She simply dusted off the ring. “There is! If you don’t like this one, I’ll get another one. Let’s start again, okay?”“No,” I stated firmly. Her breathing stilled, and she looked like she was suffocating. It was as if there were hands around her throat.“I understand.”She became even quieter but refused to let me leave her sight. When she went to work or on business trips, she always insisted on bringing me along, no matter how far it was. Then, she started flying everywhere to look for doctors for me, be it in the country or abroad. All she got was the same result. I could never stand up again, and my hand would never heal either. I had long since accepted this, but Winona refused to give up. She broke down outside the ward in depression and agony. “Why do things have to end up like this between us?”I could hear clear slaps echoing in the corridor, along with her stifled sobs. The doctors and nurses said that

Winona was flabbergasted. She opened her mouth but found herself unable to say anything. In the end, she hung her head in defeat. She no longer asked me for anything and only stood in the shadows as my tool. Even when she spoke to me, she did so hesitantly. “Dear, the sun is out today. I’ll bring you out for a walk.”Before I could answer, she had already wrapped a scarf around my neck and carefully applied tone-up cream on my face. However, normal makeup could not hide the tattoo on my face. Winona could only stubbornly apply it over and over. In the end, she broke down in tears. “Why can’t I hide it…? Why is it still there…?”I turned my face away impassively. “Stop it already.”“No! I have to hide it. Once you’re better, we’ll get rid of the tattoo.”I stared at the floor calmly. “I don’t care.”“But I do!”She grabbed my shoulders. It looked like she was using all her strength to do so.“Didn’t you say that you want to go out? Let’s go, then.”Her shoulders slumped

When I was pushing my wheelchair, I suddenly felt the resistance ease, so I ducked my head and did not dare look up. “Thank you.”Then, I heard a familiar breathing pattern, and I thought that I was hearing things. The woman slowly squatted down and grabbed my hands. Her eyes were bloodshot. “You really are alive.”My heart started racing, and goosebumps broke out on my skin. I started rolling the wheelchair so that I could leave. “You have the wrong person.”In the next second, she grabbed my waist tightly and forced me to look into her eyes. “I didn’t. You’re Shaun Zimmer, my husband.”As I stared at the familiar face, I tensed up. “I’m not.”Winona’s breathing froze, but she still had her subordinate stuff me into her car. “Let’s go home, dear.”The car moved steadily, and when we were back, she had her subordinate put me gently on the couch. With a trembling hand, she touched my face. “I’ve been going to all the cities you loved, dear. I wasn’t expecting to find you. Thank

All Winona could do was to use alcohol to numb herself from day to night. Then, Jacob brought Zephyr over. “You know about it, don’t you, Winona? I was just too scared. That’s why I did it… You won’t blame me, right?”Winona sneered. “You were too scared?”Jacob pursed his lips and stepped forward to speak in an even softer voice, “I really didn’t do it on purpose. But since he’s no longer around, why don’t we…?”“Why don’t we what?” There was no warmth in Winona’s voice. “Are you saying that you’re willing to be with me and help me move past this? Or are you going to tell me that Zephyr needs a proper family?”Jacob turned pale, as if Winona had hit a sore spot. “Winona, I really do love you…”“Love?” Winona sneered and stomped on his chest. “Is your version of loving me killing my husband so that you can marry me? I must have been blind to think that you were kind!”She kicked him down.“You’re horrible! Don’t bully Daddy!” Zephyr rushed over, and she frowned as she kicked h

“What did you say? Say it again!” She clenched her fists. Her assistant watched her for a bit and stayed silent. Winona started shouting, “That’s impossible! I sent him to Historia City to rest! I got the best physiotherapist for him!”In her desperation, she grabbed Jacob’s collar. “Was the surgery a success or not?!”Jacob stumbled and avoided her gaze. “O-Of course it was. Don’t you trust me?”Winona’s heart plummeted, and she sneered. When she called the rehabilitation center in Historia City, she found that Shaun had never been there. “As if I’d believe you. Serenity, get the car ready. We’re going back right now.”On the way back, Winona’s heart raced with unprecedented fear, and she stood for a long while at the door before summoning her courage and opening it. “I’m back, dear. Can we stop fighting…”The house was silent. It was still decorated in the way Shaun loved, and nothing was missing. She rushed into the bedroom. “Are you still angry, dear?” The silenc

Jacob still felt sad and refused to forgive me. So, I was forced to keep slapping myself at the company entrance to earn his forgiveness. The passersby could kick me whenever they walked past me. Some even treated me like I was some kind of tourist attraction. My photo was taken multiple times. My eyes were red and dry, and I even felt like it was hard to breathe. On the eighth day, I had appendicitis and was admitted into the hospital, so I called Winona. “I don’t have any money. Could you hire a caretaker for me?”There was laughter in the background. After a long while, Winona snapped at me, “That’s enough. You’re in a ward that costs thousands of dollars a night. Why are you still dissatisfied? You weren’t forced to continue begging for forgiveness because Jacob is kind. I’m busy. Stop calling me.”I clutched my phone and tasted blood. My entire body ached. I clenched my teeth and decided to fight for myself one last time. I reported Jacob for falsifying his degree and ha
