Chapter 3

“Rey, I booked the plane tickets for our trip.”

Nicholas held up his phone and showed me the scenery of each attraction.

The destination wedding plan I had longed for over two years was finally going to come true.

But it only came after I had exploded in anger and threatened to break up.

The plan felt hollow. It was not a romantic gesture. It was damage control.

I got the same itinerary he had originally created for Annie over the past two months. It felt tainted by his emotional betrayal.

I was too hurt to put it into words.

I hated it so much that I wanted to tear it all apart. However, I suppressed my emotions.

After all, we had been together for ten years. It would be hard to make a clean break. I needed time to end all of it properly.

“Rey, I’ll go get everything ready for the trip, okay?” he asked tentatively.

I gave him a way out.

“Go buy me a strawberry glazed donut from the dessert shop, too. I feel like having one.”

“Okay!” He was delighted, thinking I had agreed to reconcile.

Before he left, he turned to me and said, “Rey, I’ve already turned Annie down and told her to go by herself.”

As soon as the door closed, he video called me.

He was worried about leaving me alone.

For several days in a row, he would video-call me every time he went out, wishing to keep an eye on me at all times.

I went about things like usual, and after a while, he finally started to calm down.

On the day Annie boarded her plane, he went out of his way to show me a picture of her checking in.

“See? Nothing to worry about, right, Rey?”

I nodded and then asked him to delete Annie’s number.

He blocked and deleted it without hesitation.

It seemed that the more demanding I acted, the more at ease he became.

Just as our lives returned to normal, the company arranged for him to pick up Annie.

He told me not to overthink it and promised to keep me on video call the entire time.

On that day, Annie texted me on WhatsApp.

She sent me a photo that disappeared from the chat after I viewed it.

She then followed up with a casual smiley face emoji.

[Oops, wrong chat. Think of these scenic pics as a little gift from me.]

[Nick’s phone died, so he asked me to tell you he’s about to take me to a business dinner and won’t be able to video call you. Don’t overthink it, okay!]

[You two are so cute together. He even has me pass along messages while he’s working. What a keeper. You’re so lucky.]

Her sending me a suggestive, disappearing photo with a smiley face emoji made the entire ordeal cruelly ironic.

I did not reply. Instead, I went to the office.

When I signed the document approving my transfer, a thousand thoughts flooded my mind.

I remembered how Nicholas had been anxious every single day after learning that I might be transferred to the headquarters office.

He held me and asked, “Rey, I know I’m being selfish. I can’t imagine my life without you. I even thought about quitting my job and following you. But Rey, I’ve worked in this company for so long.

“I don’t know if I can just quit like this.”

He no longer needed to be in this dilemma.

I was stepping aside for Annie, and we were going our separate ways.

The company bought me a train ticket.

Just when I thought I would not see Nicholas again before I left, I ran straight into him and Annie the moment I exited the office.
