Chapter 2

Author: Foxy Piglet
I stared at him, wondering how he could sound so convincing while spouting nonsense.

When I did not respond, Nicholas grew visibly flustered.

He repeatedly assured me that he was simply looking out for a colleague.

“I helped her with the itinerary because I didn’t want her coming back late and holding up the team’s work.

“There’s nothing else to it. Don’t overthink this.

“Rey, if it bothers you that much, I’ll block her and never see her again. Just don’t use breaking up as a threat, alright?

I scrolled across the screen.

Those chat messages kept flashing back into my mind, no matter how hard I tried to push them away.

His “no other intention” meant that they were more than friends, but less than lovers.

“How naive do you think I am, Nicholas?

“Blocking her doesn’t mean you can’t unblock her later. You two work at the same company. You can’t avoid her forever.

“It was such a detailed itinerary. It even included which hotel to stay at, where to go, and what to eat.

“I waited two whole years for those plans. She got them in the blink of an eye. Is this special treatment also supposed to be normal, harmless workplace kindness?”

I held my breath while waiting for his reply.

I used to feel sorry for him, thinking he was working hard and exhausted late into the night.

But it turned out he was not actually working. He had been using that time to plan a romantic trip for another woman.

That irony kept hitting me over and over, and it made me feel sick and numb inside.

“Take all the time you need. When you’ve figured things out, give me a call. We’ve got too much tied up in each other to just walk away cleanly.”

I picked up my coat and walked toward the door.

He stepped past me in one stride and blocked my way at the entrance.

His tall frame loomed over me as his large hand gripped my arm tightly.

Tears welled up in his eyes as he said, “Don’t go.”

I was emotionally shut down. But the moment I looked at him, all the suppressed feelings broke through, and tears welled up.

My stomach churned with a hot, sick feeling that climbed all the way to my throat.

I shoved at him, trying to get past him and out the door.

He was sobbing too, but he stood there like a wall, just repeating over and over, “Don’t go.”

In the end, I went back to the bedroom and refused to open the door.

He stayed outside the whole time, not willing to leave.

Then, my best friend, Patricia Bellamy, called me.

“Rey, what happened between you and Nicholas? He didn’t even show up to today’s client meeting.”

I stayed silent.

On the other end of the line, Patricia began to lecture me.

“You two have always been so inseparable. Listen to me, just let it slide. Men like him don’t come around often.”

“He cheated. I’m breaking up with him. Don’t bother trying to change my mind,” I said as my voice came out hoarse.

Patricia paused for a moment.

“Rey, Nicholas knew you loved roses. All through college, he got up early every morning to order you the freshest bouquets. He knew you didn’t like takeaways, so he went and got a chef’s license.

“Over the years since graduation, we’ve received gifts from time to time, and I know you’re not that thoughtful. It was always Nicholas who sent them on your behalf.

“He truly loves you.”

In the end, I just hung up the phone.

That day, I received countless calls, from classmates to teachers, friends to relatives, all urging me to get back together with Nicholas.

The last call came from my mother.

“Rey, don’t be so stubborn. Nicholas is good to us, and he has a good job. He just didn’t handle boundaries well. It’s not like you caught him cheating in bed. Young people make mistakes sometimes.”

My fingers trembled.

I had friends and family, yet at that moment, I felt utterly alone.

They all wanted something from Nicholas, or perhaps they had simply grown accustomed to me being with him.

But I did not want that any longer.

“Fine, Mom. I’ll do what you say.”

I hung up.

When I pushed open the door, Nicholas was sitting on the floor. He quickly looked up at me.

He looked completely worn out and lost.

  • We Stopped Loving Each Other   Chapter 9

(Nicholas’ POV)During my tenth year with Audrey, she was still as beautiful as ever, but I had grown somewhat tired. It was not that I did not love her anymore. It was actually the opposite. We were so close that I just assumed she would always be there.I started brushing off the little things she asked for every now and then.Over time, I got so used to the good things in our relationship that I stopped appreciating them.I realized that I had been happily receiving all of Audrey’s love and effort, but I had become complacent and stopped putting in any effort myself.Even planning our destination wedding had become a chore. After all, Audrey was mine, and we would always be together.I figured if we really loved each other, we did not have to be attached at the hip.One night, I got set up. Annie, who was sitting beside me, sobbed as if her whole world had fallen apart. I felt bad for her. She was young and helpless, and she looked vulnerable. At first, I did not hav

I closed the door behind me.For a long while, I did not hear Nicholas leave. For the next few days, he secretly showed up. He rented the apartment across from mine.In the vase by his window, he placed a fresh rose every single day.Several times, when I worked late into the night, he would quietly walk me home. Before I left the country, my mother called me.“Rey, are you really breaking up with Nick for good?”“Mom, if you’re going to try and talk me into getting back together with him, don’t bother.”What my mother said next made me so stunned that I stopped moving my mouse.“I’m not trying to talk you into anything, Rey. You should put in a request with your company to go abroad. Annie jumped from a building.”I did not like Annie, but hearing that she had passed away, as a fellow human being, I still felt a momentary pang of sadness. On the other end of the line, my mother kept rambling.“Yesterday, she went to the tallest office building in town and jumped. The phon

Nicholas’ voice sounded hoarse and dejected.I was about to end the call when he said urgently, “Rey, wait! Don’t hang up! Just let me explain!“I was manipulated. I had no idea what happened. I only did it with Annie once, and I never crossed the line again! You can check and ask anyone all you want! “I already quit my job. Rey, you can do whatever you want with me. Please don’t block me...”After he was done, I hung up.I scoffed inwardly as I put my phone away. Why did I even hope he would choose the right words? After blocking his new number, I threw myself completely into my work.Briar had indeed kept her word and introduced me to many men. But I was not ready to date again. As I advanced in my career, my efforts paid off. I finally had a steady, comfortable income that made me feel secure and happy.“Rey, I put your name in for the overseas rotation. The branch abroad needs a manager, and you’re my best employee. Don’t make me regret it when you get there.”I was

The work group chat flooded with messages attacking me.After scrolling through the chat, I learned that Nicholas had left Annie alone at home.Annie had slit her wrist. She was only saved when a colleague found her.[@Audrey, how cruel can you be? You drove a young girl to attempt ending her own life. You’re a woman too! How could you destroy another woman’s reputation with lies?][She’s practically middle-aged already, isn’t she? That’s exactly how bitter old women act. No wonder Nick never married her all these years. He must have seen her for what she really is!][I’ve already talked to management about firing Audrey!]Annie was so quick to act.Very quickly, my direct supervisor, Briar Perry, called me.“Audrey, the branch office filed a complaint against you for defaming a colleague. You’ve just freshly transferred to headquarters, and this is already happening. Take care of it.”“Okay.”After I hung up, the work chat flooded again.Nicholas had spoken up in my defense

The engine was loud. My phone kept buzzing with messages. The house was sold, and the consignment contract for my old stuff was signed.Among all the notifications, one message stood out.[Rey, once you’re on that train, don’t look back. Otherwise, I’ll tell Nick right now about your secretly signed transfer paperwork.][I don’t have what you have. Nicholas is my best shot, and I’ll do whatever it takes to keep him.]After confirming that I had seen it, Annie recalled the message. She was truly cautious. But she had forgotten that in the digital age, everything left traces. I turned off my phone and watched the scenery outside the window grow increasingly blurry. I felt light and liberated, like the wind rushing behind a moving train.Despite still being hurt by what happened, I pushed it aside. As long as I did not think about it, I would forget about it.By midnight, Nicholas finally sent me a message, asking where I had gone.I ignored it.A moment later, he sent anot

“Why didn’t you text back?” Nicholas was out of breath. He must have rushed over.Annie spoke with a sharp, mocking tone.“Rey, if you’re going to be jealous, at least do it at the right time. Nick walked out of a business dinner just to come find you.”The colleagues around us all cast strange glances in my direction.I knew Annie was doing it on purpose. She was deliberately shifting the blame onto me to humiliate me.Nicholas probably caught on to that as well, but he said nothing. After a brief silence, she shoved her phone in front of my face.“Rey, you’re upset just because Nick made a travel plan for me, and I got him a ticket in return, aren’t you?“Seriously, don’t overthink this. I invited a lot of people on this trip, not just him.“I’ll send you the whole itinerary right now to prove I’m not hiding anything. Is that enough for you?”Her voice grew more intense as she spoke. With red-rimmed eyes, she jabbed at her phone as if venting her frustration. She delibera
