Chapter 2

Autor: Ladywoffie
It wasn't until late that night that I finally got an Uber.

At Urgent Care, the on-duty doctor's face turned grim the moment he finished examining Leo's mouth.

"Your handling of this was terrible. What were you thinking?"

When he saw the ChatGPT reply on my phone screen, "local ice application and observation should suffice," he snapped.

"AI can't replace a doctor. I honestly don't know what you self-righteous mothers are thinking."

I could only hold Leo tighter.

The doctor went on.

"A six-month-old with severe oral burns and infection. This is serious neglect of infant safety. He needs to be transferred to the ER immediately for anti-inflammatory and anti-shock treatment."

The tears I'd been holding back finally broke loose. I clutched Leo and said, my voice raw, "We'll transfer to the ER now."

While I sat with Leo in the ER waiting hall, hooked up to an IV, my phone buzzed.

Vivian posted on Instagram.

"You should pick someone who'll go crazy with you anytime."

I remembered the day Leo turned six months old. I'd begged Sebastian to take us to Disney World in Orlando. He'd agreed right away.

"Sure, I'd love to go."

And then nothing. Ever.

At three in the morning, the infection spiked Leo's fever. His whole body burned. I kept begging the nurses for help, my eyes red and swollen with panic.

Just then, a commotion broke out at the ER entrance.

"Doctor, get me a private observation room, now. She fainted from low blood sugar. She needs to be admitted for tests immediately!"

Sebastian came charging in, carrying Vivian in his arms.

The nurse checked the system, her face falling with difficulty.

"Mr. Shaw, as a donor to our medical group, you and your family are entitled to priority use of a private observation room. But tonight there's only one left."

The nurse pointed at me, holding my feverish, convulsing baby.

"This woman's child has a high fever and severe burns. We were just about to assign that room to them—"

Sebastian's gaze followed the nurse's hand and landed on me and Leo. He froze.

But the next second, his eyes flickered, and almost without hesitation, the words came out.

"Vivian's situation is more urgent right now. Give her the room."

The nurse, who knew Leo's condition, looked at me with utter disbelief and pity.

Vivian was wheeled into the warm, comfortable private room at once.

Sebastian hurried after her. The whole time, he didn't look back at me or Leo. Not once.

My burning child twitched faintly in my arms. My heart went completely cold.

Half an hour later, Sebastian came out of the room, frowning awkwardly.

"I just asked the doctor for Vivian. The kid's fever is just a normal inflammation. He can get a fever shot in a chair in the waiting hall. No need to take up a private room."

"Vivian nearly went into shock from low blood sugar. If she doesn't get proper observation, she could have lasting complications."

He reached out to feel Leo's forehead. I pulled back coldly.

"No need. We don't need anything from you."

I held Leo close and turned toward the noisy, crowded waiting hall.

The next morning, Leo's fever finally broke.

I dragged my exhausted body to the immigration office. Not for the family visa I'd filed for over and over, the one that was supposed to take me and Leo overseas with him. That paperwork was dead. I was there for exit permits for me and my son. Our own way out.

The moment I stepped into the lobby, I ran into Sebastian's subordinate, Kim.

Kim greeted me warmly.

"We were just talking about you this morning. You're really Mr. Shaw's perfect wife. Your baby's still so small, and you're willing to endure a long-distance separation for your husband's career."

I didn't understand. I thought he'd gotten the wrong information, and managed a faint smile.

"What?"

Kim looked confused, then lowered his voice.

"Mr. Shaw already gave the company's only executive family green card sponsorship quota to Vivian last week. I'm here to pick up her approval letter right now."

"Joyce—"The call came out shaking.Sebastian stood under the streetlight in a brown wool coat, stubble on his chin, his eyes dull and gray.I stopped and slowly looked up."Have you decided to sign the divorce?"Sebastian's expression stalled."Joyce... the only thing you want to say to me now is divorce?"I curved my lips and threw the question back."What else is there?"Sebastian's eyes suddenly went red. He pressed his lips tight and looked at me, his voice dropping low."I gave up the Silicon Valley executive position. I asked the board to let me focus on domestic market expansion instead. From now on my work will shift back to the family. I'll make more time for you and Leo. Is that enough for you?"His tone made it sound like a huge concession, a huge sacrifice.I shrugged and smiled, completely indifferent."Whatever you do is fine by me."A flicker of hope crossed his face.I went on."Because... I'm not planning to live with you anymore."He froze."Sebastian, I just realize

I left the Bay Area with Leo and started a journey across North America. From the grandeur of Yellowstone to the rainy nights of Seattle, all the way to the bustling streets of New York.Back in my marriage, I'd begged Sebastian countless times to take a little time and go somewhere with me and Leo. Every answer was either "too busy with work, no time" or "bringing a kid out is exhausting and annoying."Now, after seeing all those different places, I finally understood.Without him, Leo and I weren't just fine. We were a thousand times happier than before. The day I arrived in New York, a string of emails from Sebastian suddenly flooded my phone.Every trace of his arrogant warnings was gone. Every line was him humbling himself, begging to reconcile.Joyce, where are you? I know I was wrong about you. I've cut Vivian off completely. Come back with Leo, okay?As long as you come back, I won't hold anything from before against you. We can start over.I couldn't even be bothered to finish

"Sebastian—"Vivian shot to her feet in terror. The bottle of nail polish slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor. Her face went white as paper.Sebastian walked in step by step, his face dark, his cold gaze sweeping over the thugs before nailing itself to Vivian's face."What did you just say? Joyce was framed? Explain. Now."The hired men exchanged glances, shrinking back in fear.Vivian forced down a swallow and pulled out a horribly ugly smile."Sebastian, it was just a joke. We didn't think Joyce wouldn't even explain herself—""A joke?"Sebastian cut her off, his voice sharp."Weren't these the same men who stood in your hospital room last night and accused Joyce of hiring them to threaten you? Why are they sitting in your apartment, joking around with you?"Vivian's eyes darted. She grabbed Sebastian's jacket."They came back to threaten me again!"One of the men threw his hands up and cut in."Sir, absolutely not. Vivian put us up to the whole act. She paid us twenty t

Sebastian pulled up to our neighborhood and opened the car door. He sat staring at the flowers and the fancy gift box he'd stopped to buy at the florist. The dead look in my eyes when I'd walked out had left him with an inexplicable irritation, a restless unease. He hadn't wanted to back down this soon. But after thinking it over, he'd brought the gifts anyway, ready to give me a cold, grudging out.But the moment he pushed open the front door, he stopped dead in his tracks."Joyce? Joyce?"Sebastian called twice. Only the echo of the big empty house answered him.He frowned, set down the flowers and the gift, and walked step by step to the master bedroom. He pushed the door open."Joy—"The word died in his throat. The bottles and jars on the vanity were gone. The crib and stroller that had sat in the corner were gone. Every piece of clothing that belonged to me and Leo had been cleared out of the closet."Another game?"He stood there stunned for a moment, then shook his head, exaspe

Sebastian had me by the wrist in a death grip. I struggled and shouted, "Are you crazy? Let go of me!""Drop the act! You're coming to the hospital with me!"Sebastian wouldn't listen to a word. He dragged me roughly toward the door. The whole way, Leo in my arms cried until his throat went hoarse. Sebastian didn't care.He hauled me into Vivian's private room.Vivian was in the hospital bed. When she saw me come in, she shrank into the covers in terror."No, Sebastian, I'm scared—"I was completely lost when two burly men standing by the bed blocked my path."Ms. Joyce, we did what you asked. We delivered the threatening letter to her. Now we got caught by her husband. But that final payment you promised, isn't it time to settle up?"I was stunned."I don't know you people at all..."Before I could finish, Sebastian shoved his phone screen in my face."You don't know them? Then what are these threatening texts and this plan? They broke into Vivian's house and took her out to the middl

My blood froze solid in that instant.Facing Kim's confusion, I nodded and said, "Thank you. I understand."That night, Sebastian came home and saw the piles of immigration paperwork on the kitchen island. Something clicked. He walked over to me with a warmth I hadn't seen in a long time."Joyce, I think you should reconsider the whole going-abroad thing."I pretended not to know what he was talking about, and asked, confused, "What do you mean?"He loosened his tie and came closer, his tone softening."I think, for the good of our whole family, with Leo still so small and everything so unstable, it's best to reconsider—"Ever since his company announced the headquarters move, I'd filed immigration and visa sponsorship materials over thirty times. And now he was telling me to reconsider.I looked at him and said calmly, "You don't want me to go abroad. So you gave the family quota to Vivian."Sebastian paused, then smiled."Vivian's visa kept getting denied. So I put her under the fami
