Chapter 3

Author: Brisk Wind
To pass the time, I lay on the hotel bed and mindlessly scrolled through my phone. While browsing social media, I noticed that Vanessa had uploaded a new photo.

It was a picture of a steaming bowl of chicken soup on a table.

"Feeling blessed. Good food, a beautiful view and great company," her caption read.

How interesting. I liked the photo and left a comment.

"Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness," I typed.

The next moment, I received a call from Vanessa herself.

Once I put the call on speakerphone, her sharp, piercing voice immediately filled the room.

"Charles Fletcher, when are you going to stop? You're so petty. I can sense your jealousy from a mile away!"

I was just about to snap at her when I heard Harold's voice in the background.

"Don't get too worked up, Vanessa. It's not good for the baby," he said.

"I'm not coming home tonight, Charles," Vanessa added. "Who knows what else you might do when you get upset?"

"What did he do to you and the baby, Vanessa?" Harold demanded angrily. His voice was deliberately raised so I could hear it.

I ended the call without a shred of hesitation. I wasn't about to let the two of them ruin my mood.

Once I had calmed down, I made a call to my company's CEO, Cindy Scott.

"Hello, Ms. Scott. About that overseas general manager position you mentioned—I'd like to take the job. I'll just need some time to handle a few personal matters first."

"Alright. Talk soon, Charlie," Cindy replied.

She let out a soft chuckle before hanging up, and for some reason, it made me blush.

Becoming the general manager of a branch company in Gresia was a great opportunity for me. But previously, I kept turning the offer down because I didn't want to be away from Vanessa.

I had attended university in Gresia and knew the country well. Hence, I was considered for the role. Additionally, Gresia was also where I met Cindy.

We met at a public speaking competition and quickly developed a mutual respect for each other. After returning to our home country, she founded the youngest Fortune Global 500 company in the world and became its CEO.

Later on, I joined her company. With her guidance and support, I rose through the ranks and became a senior executive at a relatively young age.

The next morning, I was woken up by a call from Vanessa.

"Where the hell are you? I'm still pregnant, you know? Can't you be more responsible?" she shouted.

Furious, I scoffed coldly. "The baby's not even mine. Take it up with the father instead. This has nothing to do with me!"

Then I ended the call and went to get my divorce settlement agreement printed.

When I returned home, I found that the locks had been changed.

I couldn't believe how impatient they were. Left with no choice, I knocked on the door.

To my dismay, Harold was the one who opened the door for me.

"Don't misunderstand the situation, Charles. Nothing is going on between Vanessa and me. She's carrying my child, so I wanted to take care of her personally," he explained.

"I don't care if you're having an affair," I spat emotionlessly. "I'm just here for the divorce."

"Can you stop being so narrow-minded?" Vanessa rolled her eyes. "Nothing improper is going on between Harold and me."

"You have no right to say that. Do you think it's 'proper' to get pregnant with another man's child behind your husband's back?" I barked.

After a brief pause, I continued, "I'm not here to argue or waste my time."

I slammed the divorce settlement agreement on the table and demanded, "Sign the papers, Vanessa. Once you do that, you'll be free. You can have as many children as you want with any man of your choosing."

Vanessa stared at the document in disbelief. "Are you serious? Don't regret this. In the future, I won't take you back even if you beg me to."

She was fuming. But before she could sign the papers, Harold rushed over to stop her.

He picked up the divorce settlement agreement and read through it.

"You and Vanessa were in a relationship for years, Charles. Now that she's pregnant, she'll need money. Leaving her with just one property is a bit stingy, don't you think?" he asked shamelessly.

Upon hearing this, Vanessa seemed to have realized something as well. She grabbed the document and scanned it. Then, she shot to her feet and raised her hand to slap me.

Reacting instantly, I caught her wrist in midair before flinging it aside.

Upon seeing the blood in front of him, Harold jolted to his senses. He dropped the knife and tried to run, but was stopped by the security guards Cindy called over. They pinned him down and called the police immediately."Charlie, I'm sorry. You treated me so well, but I was never satisfied. I was living a good life, but I messed it all up. I regret it so much," Vanessa mumbled.I looked at her but couldn't say a word, my throat tight with emotion."Hold on. The ambulance is coming soon," I finally choked out."Charlie, I love you. After that, the heiress personally went to Merinica, where she had Harold physically castrated before using her influence to have him and his parents deported from the country. The woman also deeply resented the child. She had originally wanted to just give him to a homeless person, but after Cindy's earnest persuasion, she finally agreed to spare the child. In the end, I returned the child to Vanessa, who wept with joy and nearly kneeled before my feet. But when I asked her to keep her promise and divorce me, she lost it and started making a scene."Charlie, our son has returned! Let's live well together as a family of three! "Don't go to another woman. I'll do whatever you say. I won't cause any more trouble. Please don't abandon the child and me!"She raised her wedding ring again, trying to play on my emotions. "You said that as long as we had the ring, you would always love me. You can't go back on your word."I felt no satisfaction seeing her in a deranged state. I only fe

I called Cindy and explained the situation, to which she confidently assured me that she would have news about the child within three days. After all, she had a very extensive network. The way I spoke to Cindy was noticeably different from how I spoke to others, as an indescribable tenderness and affection would fill my voice. This made Vanessa sense something was up.Thus, after I hung up, she insisted on staying with me even when William told her to go back home and wait for updates. While I wasn't paying attention, she grabbed my hand and refused to let go no matter what."Charles, is there someone else? Why are you treating me like this? Don't you love me anymore?"She raised her hand to show me a ring on her finger. It was our wedding ring.Unfortunately for her, things had already changed."You said you would love me for a lifetime. How can you be with someone else? I refuse to believe you don't love me anymore," Vanessa continued.I let out a derisive laugh. "How do you s

After I was done handling this matter, I boarded a plane to Gresia.I had just been appointed general manager of a branch company and was extremely busy, so I left the divorce proceedings entirely in William's hands.William patted his chest and assured me he'd handle everything. Harold shoved me aside and rushed forward to grab Vanessa's hand. "I'm sorry, Vanessa. I didn't mean to abandon you. I assumed that Charles wouldn't turn his back on you. I didn't think he would be so heartless," Harold said, shooting me a glare.Once he showed up, Vanessa quickly latched onto him before growing teary and upset. As she gently pounded on his chest, the pair began to openly flirt in front of everyone.Their behavior made me sick, and I didn't want to stay in that place for another second. All of a sudden, Harold grabbed me like a madman and shouted, "You nearly caused my wife to miscarry! You can't just walk away like this."His blatant accusation immediately drew the attention of a large crowd. In the blink of an eye, the area became overrun with spectators."Help us out, everyone! My wife and I have suffered so much. It took us forever to get pregnant, and we almost lost our baby earlier!" he yelled. After a brief pause, he turned toward me and spat, "You can't

"Get your facts straight. You're the one who cheated. I'm already doing you a favor by not letting you leave this marriage empty-handed. Don't push your luck," I said coolly."I'm taking the money and the house. You should walk away with nothing. I got an abortion for you. These assets should be enough to count as compensation," Vanessa shot back.I let out a cold laugh. I couldn't believe how shameless she was. How could she bring up the abortion? I would never get over the pain of losing that baby. And now, she was using it as a bargaining chip. Despite our current situation, I used to love her. So, I had originally planned on leaving her the house. But that wouldn't be necessary anymore. Now, I refused to give her anything. I picked up the divorce papers and tore them to shreds. "I'll see you in court. This time, I won't give you a single cent."I strode out of the house and called my lawyer, William Cowan, as I left.William was one of my closest friends in college, and h
