Chapter 2

Author: Brisk Wind
Two years ago, she was afraid of developing stretch marks. So, she begged me to agree to abort our unborn child.

"I don't want kids. Giving birth alters your appearance. If I become ugly, you're not going to love me anymore," she cried.

The news was too much for my grandmother, who had always wanted great-grandchildren. Unfortunately, she passed away due to emotional distress. Due to her passing, my parents and I grew distant.

I understood her desire to stay beautiful. Hence, from that day onward, I never pressured her to have children again. But now, she had broken her own principles for another man. By doing so, she had turned my love for her into a complete joke.

"Aren't you going to tell me the truth, Vanessa? What's going on with you and Harold?" I asked again.

"Since you've already found out, there's no point in hiding it from you anymore. That's right—I'm pregnant. I'm already three months along."

I scoffed wryly. "You're finally admitting it."

"What did I ever do to you? How could you degrade yourself and have a child with someone else?" I shouted, my voice laced with grief and anger. "Go to the hospital with me right now and terminate the pregnancy."

"That's not happening. Harold has erectile dysfunction. His mom wants to meet her grandchildren before she dies. Can't you be more generous? You're such a petty man."

"What about my grandmother?" I shot back. "She wanted great-grandchildren too! She treated you well, and she was always thinking of you. But you crushed her hopes and let her pass away with regrets. Do you have no empathy?"

I let out a wry laugh. Unable to think straight, I marched toward Vanessa and grabbed her arm. Then, I started dragging her toward the door.

"We're going to the hospital," I demanded. "If you want this marriage to work, you'll have to abort the baby."

All of a sudden, I felt a sharp sting on my cheek. My head began to ring, and my mind went blank.

Vanessa had slapped me hard across the face.

"Are you done? This is my baby! What I choose to do with it is none of your business!" she snapped.

The slap made me see everything clearly. My face felt cold, and I soon realized I was crying.

I thought I'd gone numb a long time ago. I didn't cry when Vanessa aborted our baby, and I didn't cry when my grandmother died. I also didn't cry when my parents cut ties with me. But now, I couldn't hold it in anymore.

I had never truly gotten over any of those events. All I did was push them aside and bury my feelings.

Upon seeing me cry, Vanessa stepped forward and put on an act of concern.

"I didn't sleep with Harold. You know he has erectile dysfunction. I only agreed to this because I felt sorry for him and his mother. I'll give birth to the baby, and after that, we can go back to our own lives."

Her shameless statements made me sick. There was no future for us anymore.

Yanking my arm away from her, I looked her straight in the eyes and declared, "Let's get a divorce."

"When are you going to stop acting out? I told you—I didn't cheat on you. After the baby is born, I'll still be with you. What more do you want from me?"

"I don't care about whether or not you've slept with Harold, and I won't ask about it again," I said flatly. "There's no future for us. I want a divorce."

"No way. I won't agree to it. You're not thinking clearly right now, so I'm not going to argue with you. Calm down and reconsider the situation by yourself."

With that, she stormed out of the house and slammed the door shut behind her.

It was late. There was only one place she could go to at this hour, but I couldn't care less about her. She could do whatever she wanted.

The soup she made me had already gone cold. I picked up the bowl and gradually finished its contents.

This was the last time I'd ever taste her cooking. Once I was done with my meal, we would have nothing to do with each other ever again.

I took one last look around the house and packed my bags without any hesitation. Afterward, I took all my belongings and headed to a hotel.

After graduating from university, I joined a Fortune Global 500 company and steadily worked my way up to a senior executive role. Meanwhile, Vanessa had been a full-time housewife all these years and had no income of her own.

The house was filled with memories of us, and those memories made me feel sick. So, I had no intention of fighting for the ownership of the place.

Upon seeing the blood in front of him, Harold jolted to his senses. He dropped the knife and tried to run, but was stopped by the security guards Cindy called over. They pinned him down and called the police immediately."Charlie, I'm sorry. You treated me so well, but I was never satisfied. I was living a good life, but I messed it all up. I regret it so much," Vanessa mumbled.I looked at her but couldn't say a word, my throat tight with emotion."Hold on. The ambulance is coming soon," I finally choked out."Charlie, I love you. I held her hand in return and managed to force a small smile toward her.…Later on, Harold was prosecuted for drug use and intentional homicide. There was overwhelming evidence and witness testimonie

After that, the heiress personally went to Merinica, where she had Harold physically castrated before using her influence to have him and his parents deported from the country. The woman also deeply resented the child. She had originally wanted to just give him to a homeless person, but after Cindy's earnest persuasion, she finally agreed to spare the child. In the end, I returned the child to Vanessa, who wept with joy and nearly kneeled before my feet. But when I asked her to keep her promise and divorce me, she lost it and started making a scene."Charlie, our son has returned! Let's live well together as a family of three! "Don't go to another woman. I'll do whatever you say. I won't cause any more trouble. Please don't abandon the child and me!"She raised her wedding ring again, trying to play on my emotions. "You said that as long as we had the ring, you would always love me. You can't go back on your word."I felt no satisfaction seeing her in a deranged state. I only fe

I called Cindy and explained the situation, to which she confidently assured me that she would have news about the child within three days. After all, she had a very extensive network. The way I spoke to Cindy was noticeably different from how I spoke to others, as an indescribable tenderness and affection would fill my voice. This made Vanessa sense something was up.Thus, after I hung up, she insisted on staying with me even when William told her to go back home and wait for updates. While I wasn't paying attention, she grabbed my hand and refused to let go no matter what."Charles, is there someone else? Why are you treating me like this? Don't you love me anymore?"She raised her hand to show me a ring on her finger. It was our wedding ring.Unfortunately for her, things had already changed."You said you would love me for a lifetime. How can you be with someone else? I refuse to believe you don't love me anymore," Vanessa continued.I let out a derisive laugh. "How do you s

After I was done handling this matter, I boarded a plane to Gresia.I had just been appointed general manager of a branch company and was extremely busy, so I left the divorce proceedings entirely in William's hands.William patted his chest and assured me he'd handle everything. Given that everyone on the internet knew about what Vanessa had done, it was guaranteed she'd walk away with nothing.Leaving a familiar environment for a foreign country was a bit hard for me to get used to. On top of that, the branch company had just been established, and I had many things to handle personally, which kept me swamped with work. What I didn't expect was for Cindy to come and help me sort things out at the branch. It felt like we had been transported back to our student days, constantly inseparable. The company staff teased us about it, and Cindy never denied it. Gradually, I came to understand her feelings.Cindy was a good woman, but I couldn't hold her back. My marriage wasn't over yet

Harold shoved me aside and rushed forward to grab Vanessa's hand. "I'm sorry, Vanessa. I didn't mean to abandon you. I assumed that Charles wouldn't turn his back on you. I didn't think he would be so heartless," Harold said, shooting me a glare.Once he showed up, Vanessa quickly latched onto him before growing teary and upset. As she gently pounded on his chest, the pair began to openly flirt in front of everyone.Their behavior made me sick, and I didn't want to stay in that place for another second. All of a sudden, Harold grabbed me like a madman and shouted, "You nearly caused my wife to miscarry! You can't just walk away like this."His blatant accusation immediately drew the attention of a large crowd. In the blink of an eye, the area became overrun with spectators."Help us out, everyone! My wife and I have suffered so much. It took us forever to get pregnant, and we almost lost our baby earlier!" he yelled. After a brief pause, he turned toward me and spat, "You can't

"Get your facts straight. You're the one who cheated. I'm already doing you a favor by not letting you leave this marriage empty-handed. Don't push your luck," I said coolly."I'm taking the money and the house. You should walk away with nothing. I got an abortion for you. These assets should be enough to count as compensation," Vanessa shot back.I let out a cold laugh. I couldn't believe how shameless she was. How could she bring up the abortion? I would never get over the pain of losing that baby. And now, she was using it as a bargaining chip. Despite our current situation, I used to love her. So, I had originally planned on leaving her the house. But that wouldn't be necessary anymore. Now, I refused to give her anything. I picked up the divorce papers and tore them to shreds. "I'll see you in court. This time, I won't give you a single cent."I strode out of the house and called my lawyer, William Cowan, as I left.William was one of my closest friends in college, and h
