Classmates?

I stared at Jenna Newson's face, my girlfriend of eight years, trying to find even a trace of joking in her expression. But there was nothing. She was serious, and... calm.

I forced the corners of my mouth into something resembling a smile. The words "I was just kidding" that I wanted to say stuck in my throat. She called us classmates. Not even close enough to be called ordinary friends.

I figured if the doctor hadn't called her, she probably wouldn't have come at all. But I didn't question her. I just smiled as if everything was normal.

Yet watching her keep her head down and stare at her phone the entire time, my gaze darkened. I started to say, "If you're busy, you don't have to..."

"I am busy, actually. Since you're fine, I'll head out first."

She didn't even let me finish before cutting me off, then grabbed her bag and headed for the door.

Maybe I still held some small place in her heart, because after pulling the door open, she glanced back at me. "Rest well."

I kept that faint smile on my face and nodded politely. But the smile didn't last long. It vanished the second she left.

Jenna and I had been together for eight years. We started dating in college and never stopped. But no one at the company knew about our relationship.

At first, we thought office romances weren't a good idea. Later, we both became directors, each leading our own department teams in competition for performance metrics. At that point, going public became even more complicated.

The company didn't actually forbid dating. Sometimes I asked her about making our relationship official, but she always laughed it off.

Sometimes I wondered if what we had only existed in name. Now I didn't need to wonder anymore. She'd wanted to break up with me for a while now, hadn't she?

The doctor told Jenna that I was perfectly fine. And when my story contradicted what the doctor said, she didn't question it.

She even stated plainly that we were just classmates. Maybe she simply didn't care whether my amnesia was real or fake. Or more accurately, she just wanted to use those words to make her attitude clear.

After all, if we broke up, she could be with Felix Foster.

Her changes hadn't escaped my notice.

We'd been together for eight years. That was nearly three thousand days and nights. We were so familiar with each other that the boundaries between us blurred until we were almost like one person.

I could spot her unusual reactions immediately, and it started when a new employee transferred into her team. A good-looking guy named Felix Foster.

In our entire company, only our chairwoman shared the surname Foster. And coincidentally, when Felix filled out his employee paperwork, under "mother" he wrote the name of our chairwoman, Francine Foster.

At first, Jenna would explain why she was looking after Felix. He was young, fresh out of college, and the chairwoman's son, so she needed to take good care of him.

She told me not to worry, that she wasn't into golden retriever types like Felix anyway. But what Jenna didn't know was that the "young man" she claimed was fresh out of college was actually three years older than me.

Then one day, I needed a video file for work. My laptop wasn't nearby, so I borrowed Jenna's. Her password had been changed.

I called her to get the new one. It was Felix's birthday.

Just when I naively thought it might be a coincidence, I noticed the wallpaper. It showed a photo from a bar with the main subject clearly being a man's hand making a heart gesture.

I remembered how possessive she used to be about wallpapers. She told me I wasn't allowed to change mine, and she promised she wouldn't change hers either.

For years, my computer wallpaper was her photo, and hers was mine. I also remembered how much she hated places like bars.

Jenna must have realized this belatedly, because shortly after I opened the computer, she called me again.

Back then, Jenna's eyes were full of me. She often held my hand and brought me here, her eyes sparkling.Later, when she joined the company, ready to prove herself, she got assigned to clean offices and file paperwork. Her eyes held more disappointment then. But she still told me every day, "Don't worry. I'm going to give you a better life someday."She was ambitious, but she couldn't deny that reality was sometimes cruel. She worked overtime chasing deals. She didn't like drinking, but she forced herself to learn.Maybe someone noticed her efforts, because she landed that deal. A big one, worth millions. But in the end, she only got a thousand-dollar bonus. The deal got credited to her supervisor's performance record. It rained hard that day. She came home soaked through, running a fever. In her delirium, she murmured, "Why... Why isn't the credit mine?"At that moment, my heart clenched and my eyes stung. That was when I mentioned Jenna to Mom.Mom didn't promise to help, but

It was just like last time, except back then Felix's attitude was arrogant. Now he was just impotently angry."Hunter, you're such a hypocritical snake. A fraud."Your dad said he didn't want anything, didn't he? So, why are you here now? To steal Mom's assets? You're shameless."Dad was a dignified man. When they separated, he was clean about it. He had his pride, so he didn't take anything. But I was different. Dad was Dad, and I was me. What was mine stayed mine.I watched him lose his composure, a mocking smile tugging at my lips."You're not a kid anymore, are you? You and your father have been leeching off my mother for years, and what do you have to show for it? A monthly allowance that barely covers basics. You don't even have a car between you."Pathetic. If you were smart, you'd go home right now and tell your father to work harder at sucking up to my mother. Otherwise, the first thing I'll do when I take over this company is cut you off completely."They could starve

"I'm old, but I'm not senile, Hunter. When it comes to what really matters, I know how to choose."Mom also told me that Fabian had been pushing for Felix to intern at the company, but she'd turned him down with various excuses every time."No matter what, I wouldn't hand the family business over to an outsider."I agreed. More than anything, I agreed because of Dad.Dad had worked hard for this company too. Why should it end up in some outsider's hands? So right after graduation, I went to work at the company.Jenna was there too. We both started from the bottom and worked our way up to where we were now. Mom knew about Jenna because I'd mentioned her before.I'd planned to surprise Jenna when Mom revealed my identity. I never expected it would turn into a shock instead.Mom's eyes dimmed. She sighed. "This is my fault."How was it her fault? Jenna was the one who'd chased opportunity and forgotten loyalty.I looked away, suddenly remembering what Felix had said. Mom thought

I looked away and walked over to Felix as if nothing was wrong, my tone light but deliberately pausing on his last name."Felix... Foster? Mind scooting over?"The atmosphere grew even quieter after I spoke, so quiet you could hear everyone breathing. Someone even gasped audibly. They were clearly shocked. This kind of shock would spread through the company fast. After all, everyone loved gossip and drama.I was just curious about Jenna. She'd told me I should understand how the world works. I wondered if she'd reached her peak yet.Afterward, I didn't bother looking at her again. When the party ended, she followed a pale-faced Felix to say goodbye to my mother. Her voice was low, seemingly laced with suppressed anger.I sat in the car without speaking while Mom gave her and Felix a meaningful look before smiling and saying goodbye. Once they left, the smile faded from her eyes as she turned to me. "You two broke up?"She knew about Jenna. When I first joined the company, I'd me

Back at my office, I saw a message from the chairwoman's secretary. The gist was that the company was hosting a farewell party for James Henderson tonight. They called it a farewell party for Mr. Henderson, but everyone knew these gatherings were when positions shifted and key personnel changed. Before I left for the party, Mark and Tony came to see me. They looked dejected but tried to encourage me anyway. "Hunter, no matter what happens, you'll always be our boss."This party was for core management only, but everyone in the company knew what it really meant. Changes were coming."Yeah, Hunter, don't worry. Even if you leave and start fresh somewhere else, we'll follow you."I smiled and teased them, "Why so pessimistic? Things have a way of working out. Don't worry."That evening, the heads of every department gathered together. Felix was there too, sitting beside Ms. Foster. Jenna sat next to Felix.Everyone appeared harmonious on the surface, but they kept glancing between

"I'm here to remind you that you should find an exit strategy. Look for other opportunities."I stared at that flawless face for a long moment.I understood what Jenna meant. She was certain she'd get the position and wanted to push me out now. Otherwise, when she got promoted with the chairwoman's son as her boyfriend, she'd become office gossip. So, she was "advising" me to find a backup plan, to leave the company. Essentially, it was all for herself to avoid the whispers and rumors. How perfectly convenient. I could have accepted her change of heart. Most relationships didn't last anyway.I just never expected her to be this selfishly inhuman.I looked at her and said flatly, "Knowing you has been the worst mistake of my life."She fell silent, unable to argue back. After breaking up with me, Jenna went public with her "office romance" with Felix. When she was with me, she always hesitated and said going public wasn't a good idea. Now, not only had she made it official, but
