Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
Linda's POV

"Oh!" Sarah exclaimed. "You've already packed half your things? And wow, your style is so much like mine! What a coincidence."

A chill spread through my chest.

Gerald's favorite thing was buying me clothes and jewelry. I used to think it was his way of spoiling me—proof that he loved me.

But now, looking around at the closet full of clothes and accessories that had never really suited me, the truth was impossible to ignore.

Every single piece looked as though it had been chosen for Sarah.

All along, I'd been the one wearing someone else's life.

I had no desire to question Gerald anymore, but he grabbed my wrist, his expression darkening.

"Why are you packing your things? Talk to me."

I turned my face away, refusing to answer.

Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw Sarah reach for my music box.

"Don't touch that!" I yelled.

The music box hit the floor with a loud crash. The lid flew off, the tiny figurines scattered in every direction, and shards littered the floor.

"Ah… I'm so sorry, Ms. Rye. I didn't mean to." Sarah's eyes immediately filled with tears. "Gerald, my hand… It hurts…"

Clutching her palm, she began to cry.

Gerald rushed over to check on her. His face darkened as he brought his foot down hard on the shattered music box.

He glared at me, fury blazing in his eyes. "It's just a stupid trinket! Did you really have to scare her? Get rid of this piece of junk. I don't want to see it anywhere in this house again!"

As soon as the words left his mouth, he ground the broken pieces beneath his heel before scooping Sarah into his arms and walking away without so much as a backward glance.

My tears fell onto the shattered music box.

As I reached down to gather the pieces, a sharp shard sliced into my fingertip, but I didn't feel a thing.

When I was 16, my parents decided to get divorced.

Lost and not knowing where else to go, I went looking for my best friend, Luna Scott. She wasn't home. Instead, I ran into Gerald, who had just gotten back from playing basketball with his friends.

"Hey, aren't you Luna's friend? Why are you crying? Come on, tell me what's wrong."

My eyes burned with tears as I turned to leave, but Gerald caught my wrist. Frowning, he waved off his friends who were still trying to drag him away for another game.

"Wait here," he said.

Then he ran out into the pouring rain. By the time he came back, he was soaked to the skin, arms loaded with every dessert and cake he could get his hands on. He piled them onto the table in front of me.

He ruffled my hair, trying to cheer me up. Then, with a mysterious grin, he pulled something out from behind his back.

It was a music box.

As the melody drifted through the room, the tiny figurines slowly revolved together.

"Don't be afraid. No matter what happens, I'm always going to be here for you. Let's make this music box our promise."

Back then, Gerald's kindness was as simple as it was sincere. But to a helpless 16-year-old girl, it was enough to steal my heart.

From that day on, I loved him for ten years. I still remembered every word of the promise he'd made.

The only one who had forgotten… was the man who'd made it.

Cradling the shattered remains of the music box in my hands, I gave it one last look before dropping it into the trash.

If that was how things were, I didn't want the promise anymore.

And I didn't want Gerald, either. Not anymore.

By the time dawn broke the next morning, Gerald still hadn't come home.

After shipping my luggage back to my parents' house, I headed to the office. I printed out my resignation letter and made my way to Gerald's office to leave it on his desk.

My phone buzzed on the way there.

It was a message from Gerald that read, "Honey, I went too far yesterday. I ended up coming back to the office to catch up on work and just slept here. I only just woke up. I'll be home soon."

I looked up at the empty office in front of me. Without a word, I laid my resignation letter on Gerald's desk.

I didn't bother replying to his message. Instead, I closed the chat and unpinned our conversation.

A notification popped up. Sarah had sent me a friend request.

A new message came through the moment I accepted it.

It read, "Gerald, don't forget to grab a few more boxes of condoms from the convenience store on your way back. You were way too much last night. We used up every last one."

The message ended with a shy, blushing emoji.

Linda's POVAlvin gave my hand a reassuring squeeze."Don't worry," he said softly. "As long as I'm with you, no one will ever disturb your life again."I nodded.Hand in hand, we walked into the city hall, had our photos taken, and officially became husband and wife.Looking at the marriage certificate in my hands, at the two of us smiling in matching outfits, I felt a quiet sense of contentment spread through me.It wasn't the kind of happiness that took your breath away. It was simple, steady, and safe.I took a photo of our marriage certificate and posted it online. Before long, my notifications were flooded with congratulations.Luna liked the post. The only comment she left read, "Congratulations, Linda. I hope you'll be happy for the rest of your life."Smiling, I called her right away."Is that all?" I teased. "That won't cut it. You're going to be my maid of honor, and I'm expecting a grand wedding gift from you too."I could already hear the tears in her voice."

Linda's POV"The hurt is already done. Even if you finally figured out your feelings, I don't want them anymore. Your love doesn't mean anything to me now. And don't forget. You're the one who destroyed what we had," I said calmly. My words brought Gerald right back to the shattered music box scattered across the floor. He buried his hands in his hair, and his face twisted with agony, as though he wished he could go back in time and beat some sense into his former self."You should go," I said quietly. "You spent all those years making sure our relationship stayed hidden. Not a single person in Riverport even knew we were together. From here on out, our lives go separate ways. Let's leave it at that."I slipped my arm through Alvin's and turned toward the entrance.Gerald cried out in despair, "No! I can prove it! I'll tell the whole world right now that you're the only woman I've ever loved… The only woman I ever wanted to marry! Please don't go. Just give me one more chance!"

Linda's POVLuna spoke through her sobs. "No, that's not true. You've done nothing wrong. This is all my brother's fault!"And… After he found out you were getting married today, he called off his wedding and said he was coming to find you. He's probably already on his way to Javern by now."I know he's been a good brother to me, but after everything he put you through… he's never been the right man for you."Our whole family owes you an apology. My parents and I all feel terrible about what happened."I was surprised to hear that Gerald had actually called off his wedding. But that was all I felt. The moment I decided to let him go, he stopped mattering to me—especially now.I glanced over at Alvin. The instant he heard me cough, he was already pouring me a glass of water.A smile found its way to my lips as I reassured Luna."Let's leave the past where it belongs. I've finally found someone who treats me the way I deserve. Luna… I know we'll both be happy."The next mornin

Third-Person POV"Where's Linda?" Gerald demanded. "Where is she?"Luna looked at him in confusion. "Gerald, I already told you at the family dinner. Her mother arranged a wonderful marriage for her. She left for Javern a few days ago to get ready for the wedding and register the marriage."Only then did the truth finally hit him.Linda hadn't been lying. She really was going to marry someone else. With a furious roar, Gerald hurled his phone to the floor, shattering it on impact."How dare she?" he bellowed. "How dare she leave me without my permission? How dare she marry another man?"Luna frowned, completely bewildered. "What do you mean? She was just your secretary. Why shouldn't she be allowed to get married?"Gerald had completely lost the polished composure he was known for. In front of his entire family, he broke down, shouting at the top of his lungs, "Who said she was just my secretary? Linda Rye has been by my side for eight years! There's no way she could ever let m

Linda's POVDuring the days after I returned to Javern, my mother seemed determined to make up for the years we'd lost.Every day, she'd come home with my favorite desserts, take me somewhere new, or surprise me with small gifts.Whenever she spotted a dress or a piece of jewelry she thought would suit me, she'd buy it on the spot and have it delivered to the house.Ten years ago, after divorcing my father, she'd moved to Javern to build her own business, leaving me behind. It was a decision she'd never stopped regretting.Maybe that was why she'd spent all these years trying to convince me to move to Javern."Mom," I said softly, "it wasn't all your fault. I was the one who wasted eight years on someone who never deserved me. You've already done more than enough."My mother's eyes softened with heartache."I believed that boy from the Scott family would always look after you the way he used to. Who would've thought he'd turn out to be such a terrible judge of character?"If

Linda's POVI looked at Gerald, and all I got in return was a cold glare. "Hand it over."I knew he didn't love me anymore. But I never thought he actually believed I was capable of stealing."How am I supposed to hand over something I've never even seen?" I bit the inside of my cheek, forcing back the tears threatening to spill.I couldn't cry—not here, and not in front of all these people. If I did, I'd lose what little pride I had left.Gerald slowly shook his head, his eyes filled with disappointment. "You're still lying?"His expression hardened. "If you won't give it back, then I'll have someone search you."With that, Gerald called over several members of the household staff and ordered them to search me on the spot.Luna hurried over at once. "Gerald! You can't do this to Linda! I've known her for years. She would never steal anything!"Stella stepped in as well, her voice filled with concern. "That's right, Gerald. I don't believe Ms. Rye is capable of something like
