Chapter 3

Washing Wheat
Linda's POV

Exactly two minutes later, Sarah unsent the message.

She apologized, "I'm so sorry, Ms. Rye. I sent that to the wrong person. You didn't see anything, did you?"

A dull ache settled in my chest.

I couldn't be bothered to play along, but before I knew it, I'd already opened her Instagram. Photo after photo filled the screen.

Sarah had been back for an entire month. And throughout that month, Gerald had taken her everywhere.

Thinking back, I realized those were the very same days he'd told me he didn't want me overworking myself and had assigned my projects to other employees instead.

The Ivoryspire, Silverpeak Mountain, Moonveil Valley—every destination was somewhere I'd once begged Gerald to take me.

He would always pull me into his arms and smile, telling me, "Soon. Once work settles down, we'll go wherever you want."

I waited eight years for him to find the time, but he never did.

Yet Sarah had only been back for a month, and somehow, he wasn't busy anymore.

Everywhere they went, Gerald let Sarah take countless photos of the two of them together.

Yet in all the years we'd been together, he'd never once let me point a camera at him.

"If my sister ever finds out I stole her best friend away, she'll kill me. Besides, you're my secretary. Office romances only give people something to gossip about. I don't want you getting hurt," he said.

But when you truly love someone, how could you ever hide it?

I should have realized it sooner.

For eight years, Gerald had gone out of his way to keep our relationship in the shadows.

It wasn't because he wanted to protect me. It was because he never loved me.

I was about to close the app when a new post from Sarah appeared at the top of my feed.

The photo had been taken in a bedroom.

Dressed in a silky camisole, Sarah rested her slender hand against a man's sculpted abdomen.

It was a live photo. The moment I clicked on it, a voice I knew all too well drifted from the speaker. "Honey…"

I'd heard Gerald call me that countless times before.

Only now did I realize he had never been calling my name.

My vision blurred as tears finally spilled over, one drop landing on Sarah's caption.

She wrote, "Last night was unforgettable. He said no substitute could ever measure up to the real thing."

I wiped my eyes and hit the Like button.

As I stepped out of the office building, I ran into my best friend, Luna, who had stopped by on an errand.

Without thinking, I told her I was leaving—that I'd be going home to get married.

For the past eight years, Gerald had insisted we keep our relationship a secret. Whenever Luna tried to pry into my love life, I'd always found a way to steer the conversation elsewhere.

But now that I was leaving, I couldn't disappear without at least saying goodbye.

Luna blinked at me in shock. "Wait… you're leaving? Just like that?"

Then she frowned. "Doesn't that mean we're barely going to see each other again?"

All I could do was nod.

She immediately took my arm and pleaded, "Linda, every time I ask you out, you tell me you're buried in work. My mom's been wanting to meet you forever—you are my best friend, after all."

She tightened her grip on my arm and flashed me a pleading smile. "You're leaving, so no more excuses. You're coming to dinner with me tonight, and that's final."

And just like that, Luna whisked me away to the family dinner her parents were hosting that evening.

I'd always turned down Luna's invitations because of Gerald.

He used to tell me that when the time came to make our relationship public, he'd be the one to take me home and introduce me to his parents—as the future daughter-in-law of the Scott family.

Eight years passed, and that day never came.

Instead, I stepped into the Scott residence for the first time only after I'd decided to leave him.

By then, a banquet was already well underway. Gerald stood beside Sarah and his parents, accepting congratulations from the city's elite as they celebrated his engagement.

So that was what tonight was about.

The Scotts were officially announcing his engagement.

Linda's POVAlvin gave my hand a reassuring squeeze."Don't worry," he said softly. "As long as I'm with you, no one will ever disturb your life again."I nodded.Hand in hand, we walked into the city hall, had our photos taken, and officially became husband and wife.Looking at the marriage certificate in my hands, at the two of us smiling in matching outfits, I felt a quiet sense of contentment spread through me.It wasn't the kind of happiness that took your breath away. It was simple, steady, and safe.I took a photo of our marriage certificate and posted it online. Before long, my notifications were flooded with congratulations.Luna liked the post. The only comment she left read, "Congratulations, Linda. I hope you'll be happy for the rest of your life."Smiling, I called her right away."Is that all?" I teased. "That won't cut it. You're going to be my maid of honor, and I'm expecting a grand wedding gift from you too."I could already hear the tears in her voice."

Linda's POV"The hurt is already done. Even if you finally figured out your feelings, I don't want them anymore. Your love doesn't mean anything to me now. And don't forget. You're the one who destroyed what we had," I said calmly. My words brought Gerald right back to the shattered music box scattered across the floor. He buried his hands in his hair, and his face twisted with agony, as though he wished he could go back in time and beat some sense into his former self."You should go," I said quietly. "You spent all those years making sure our relationship stayed hidden. Not a single person in Riverport even knew we were together. From here on out, our lives go separate ways. Let's leave it at that."I slipped my arm through Alvin's and turned toward the entrance.Gerald cried out in despair, "No! I can prove it! I'll tell the whole world right now that you're the only woman I've ever loved… The only woman I ever wanted to marry! Please don't go. Just give me one more chance!"

Linda's POVLuna spoke through her sobs. "No, that's not true. You've done nothing wrong. This is all my brother's fault!"And… After he found out you were getting married today, he called off his wedding and said he was coming to find you. He's probably already on his way to Javern by now."I know he's been a good brother to me, but after everything he put you through… he's never been the right man for you."Our whole family owes you an apology. My parents and I all feel terrible about what happened."I was surprised to hear that Gerald had actually called off his wedding. But that was all I felt. The moment I decided to let him go, he stopped mattering to me—especially now.I glanced over at Alvin. The instant he heard me cough, he was already pouring me a glass of water.A smile found its way to my lips as I reassured Luna."Let's leave the past where it belongs. I've finally found someone who treats me the way I deserve. Luna… I know we'll both be happy."The next mornin

Third-Person POV"Where's Linda?" Gerald demanded. "Where is she?"Luna looked at him in confusion. "Gerald, I already told you at the family dinner. Her mother arranged a wonderful marriage for her. She left for Javern a few days ago to get ready for the wedding and register the marriage."Only then did the truth finally hit him.Linda hadn't been lying. She really was going to marry someone else. With a furious roar, Gerald hurled his phone to the floor, shattering it on impact."How dare she?" he bellowed. "How dare she leave me without my permission? How dare she marry another man?"Luna frowned, completely bewildered. "What do you mean? She was just your secretary. Why shouldn't she be allowed to get married?"Gerald had completely lost the polished composure he was known for. In front of his entire family, he broke down, shouting at the top of his lungs, "Who said she was just my secretary? Linda Rye has been by my side for eight years! There's no way she could ever let m

Linda's POVDuring the days after I returned to Javern, my mother seemed determined to make up for the years we'd lost.Every day, she'd come home with my favorite desserts, take me somewhere new, or surprise me with small gifts.Whenever she spotted a dress or a piece of jewelry she thought would suit me, she'd buy it on the spot and have it delivered to the house.Ten years ago, after divorcing my father, she'd moved to Javern to build her own business, leaving me behind. It was a decision she'd never stopped regretting.Maybe that was why she'd spent all these years trying to convince me to move to Javern."Mom," I said softly, "it wasn't all your fault. I was the one who wasted eight years on someone who never deserved me. You've already done more than enough."My mother's eyes softened with heartache."I believed that boy from the Scott family would always look after you the way he used to. Who would've thought he'd turn out to be such a terrible judge of character?"If

Linda's POVI looked at Gerald, and all I got in return was a cold glare. "Hand it over."I knew he didn't love me anymore. But I never thought he actually believed I was capable of stealing."How am I supposed to hand over something I've never even seen?" I bit the inside of my cheek, forcing back the tears threatening to spill.I couldn't cry—not here, and not in front of all these people. If I did, I'd lose what little pride I had left.Gerald slowly shook his head, his eyes filled with disappointment. "You're still lying?"His expression hardened. "If you won't give it back, then I'll have someone search you."With that, Gerald called over several members of the household staff and ordered them to search me on the spot.Luna hurried over at once. "Gerald! You can't do this to Linda! I've known her for years. She would never steal anything!"Stella stepped in as well, her voice filled with concern. "That's right, Gerald. I don't believe Ms. Rye is capable of something like
