Chapter 4

Washing Wheat
Linda's POV

Gerald wasn't wasting any time making his engagement to Sarah known to the world.

My first instinct was to leave. Before I could, Luna had already caught my hand and pulled me toward the crowd.

"Mom! Dad! I finally brought my favorite girl to meet you!"

The moment Gerald spotted me, his expression stiffened.

Almost unconsciously, he pulled his arm away from Sarah's waist.

Stella Banks' eyes lit up the instant she saw me.

"So you're Linda!" she said with a beaming smile, taking both my hands in hers. "Luna never stops talking about you. She says you're kind, hardworking, and the sweetest friend anyone could ask for. You're even more lovely than I imagined."

I offered a small, self-conscious smile.

Stella held my hands as though she'd known me for years.

A dull ache settled in my chest. We had been so close, just one step away from becoming family.

"Oh!" Stella said, as if remembering something. "Luna told me you've been so busy with work these past few years that you haven't had time to meet anyone."

She looked around the banquet hall with a smile. "There are so many wonderful young men here tonight. Would you like me to introduce you to someone?"

Before I could turn her down, Gerald let out a quiet, mocking laugh. "She won't need one."

He was right. I wouldn't.

I was leaving soon to marry someone else.

Before the awkward silence could settle, Luna chimed in with a sigh.

"Mom, Linda really doesn't need a blind date. She's getting married in Javern soon." She looped an arm around mine and pouted. "I have no idea how many times I'll even get to see her in a year after that."

The smug look on Gerald's face vanished. He stared at me, his expression suddenly unreadable.

Halfway through the banquet, I slipped away to the restroom.

On my way back, Gerald caught me around the wrist and pulled me into a quiet corner.

He caged me against the wall, lowering his head with the same lazy smile he always wore.

"Honey," he murmured, sounding almost amused. "Don't joke about marrying someone else again. Even I get jealous."

I looked at him and couldn't help laughing. "Aren't you about to marry someone else yourself?"

Gerald frowned. "Don't be ridiculous. You know this is just for the company."

A moment later, his tone softened.

"Come on." He coaxed me gently. "You've always been the sensible one, haven't you? When the banquet's over, go home and pack your things. I'll take you to the new apartment. Sarah's my fiancee, at least in the public eye. It wouldn't be right for you to keep staying at the house."

Because I'd always been understanding, I'd spent eight years trapped in a relationship that could never see the light of day.

And now, he expected me to stay hidden forever.

I was just about to tell him there was no need when Sarah's sob echoed through the banquet hall.

Gerald released me without a second thought and rushed toward the sound. "What happened, Sarah?"

Sarah held up her left hand, her ring finger bare as tears streamed down her face. "Gerald… The engagement ring you gave me is gone…"

She was sobbing so hard she could barely speak.

"That ring… It was custom-made," she choked out. "You only get one in a lifetime. I know I was still wearing it before I went to the restroom…"

Still crying, she stumbled over to me and clutched my arm. "Ms. Rye, you were the only other person in the restroom with me. I know you've been by Gerald's side for years. It's only natural if you've grown… attached to him."

She lowered her head, as though she regretted voicing the suspicion. "But that ring means everything to me. If you really took it… Please, just give it back. I won't blame you."

With a few tearful words, Sarah had convicted me in everyone's eyes.

Before I could say a word, I was the thief.

"I knew it." A woman sneered. "These secretaries are all the same. She even dressed herself up to look like Ms. Wheeler. A knockoff will always be a knockoff. Did she really think she could take Ms. Wheeler's place with a few cheap tricks?"

"Exactly!" another woman scoffed. "First she tries to steal someone else's man, and now she's stealing her engagement ring? Throw her out!"

The accusations came from every direction, each one more vicious than the last.

Linda's POVAlvin gave my hand a reassuring squeeze."Don't worry," he said softly. "As long as I'm with you, no one will ever disturb your life again."I nodded.Hand in hand, we walked into the city hall, had our photos taken, and officially became husband and wife.Looking at the marriage certificate in my hands, at the two of us smiling in matching outfits, I felt a quiet sense of contentment spread through me.It wasn't the kind of happiness that took your breath away. It was simple, steady, and safe.I took a photo of our marriage certificate and posted it online. Before long, my notifications were flooded with congratulations.Luna liked the post. The only comment she left read, "Congratulations, Linda. I hope you'll be happy for the rest of your life."Smiling, I called her right away."Is that all?" I teased. "That won't cut it. You're going to be my maid of honor, and I'm expecting a grand wedding gift from you too."I could already hear the tears in her voice."

Linda's POV"The hurt is already done. Even if you finally figured out your feelings, I don't want them anymore. Your love doesn't mean anything to me now. And don't forget. You're the one who destroyed what we had," I said calmly. My words brought Gerald right back to the shattered music box scattered across the floor. He buried his hands in his hair, and his face twisted with agony, as though he wished he could go back in time and beat some sense into his former self."You should go," I said quietly. "You spent all those years making sure our relationship stayed hidden. Not a single person in Riverport even knew we were together. From here on out, our lives go separate ways. Let's leave it at that."I slipped my arm through Alvin's and turned toward the entrance.Gerald cried out in despair, "No! I can prove it! I'll tell the whole world right now that you're the only woman I've ever loved… The only woman I ever wanted to marry! Please don't go. Just give me one more chance!"

Linda's POVLuna spoke through her sobs. "No, that's not true. You've done nothing wrong. This is all my brother's fault!"And… After he found out you were getting married today, he called off his wedding and said he was coming to find you. He's probably already on his way to Javern by now."I know he's been a good brother to me, but after everything he put you through… he's never been the right man for you."Our whole family owes you an apology. My parents and I all feel terrible about what happened."I was surprised to hear that Gerald had actually called off his wedding. But that was all I felt. The moment I decided to let him go, he stopped mattering to me—especially now.I glanced over at Alvin. The instant he heard me cough, he was already pouring me a glass of water.A smile found its way to my lips as I reassured Luna."Let's leave the past where it belongs. I've finally found someone who treats me the way I deserve. Luna… I know we'll both be happy."The next mornin

Third-Person POV"Where's Linda?" Gerald demanded. "Where is she?"Luna looked at him in confusion. "Gerald, I already told you at the family dinner. Her mother arranged a wonderful marriage for her. She left for Javern a few days ago to get ready for the wedding and register the marriage."Only then did the truth finally hit him.Linda hadn't been lying. She really was going to marry someone else. With a furious roar, Gerald hurled his phone to the floor, shattering it on impact."How dare she?" he bellowed. "How dare she leave me without my permission? How dare she marry another man?"Luna frowned, completely bewildered. "What do you mean? She was just your secretary. Why shouldn't she be allowed to get married?"Gerald had completely lost the polished composure he was known for. In front of his entire family, he broke down, shouting at the top of his lungs, "Who said she was just my secretary? Linda Rye has been by my side for eight years! There's no way she could ever let m

Linda's POVDuring the days after I returned to Javern, my mother seemed determined to make up for the years we'd lost.Every day, she'd come home with my favorite desserts, take me somewhere new, or surprise me with small gifts.Whenever she spotted a dress or a piece of jewelry she thought would suit me, she'd buy it on the spot and have it delivered to the house.Ten years ago, after divorcing my father, she'd moved to Javern to build her own business, leaving me behind. It was a decision she'd never stopped regretting.Maybe that was why she'd spent all these years trying to convince me to move to Javern."Mom," I said softly, "it wasn't all your fault. I was the one who wasted eight years on someone who never deserved me. You've already done more than enough."My mother's eyes softened with heartache."I believed that boy from the Scott family would always look after you the way he used to. Who would've thought he'd turn out to be such a terrible judge of character?"If

Linda's POVI looked at Gerald, and all I got in return was a cold glare. "Hand it over."I knew he didn't love me anymore. But I never thought he actually believed I was capable of stealing."How am I supposed to hand over something I've never even seen?" I bit the inside of my cheek, forcing back the tears threatening to spill.I couldn't cry—not here, and not in front of all these people. If I did, I'd lose what little pride I had left.Gerald slowly shook his head, his eyes filled with disappointment. "You're still lying?"His expression hardened. "If you won't give it back, then I'll have someone search you."With that, Gerald called over several members of the household staff and ordered them to search me on the spot.Luna hurried over at once. "Gerald! You can't do this to Linda! I've known her for years. She would never steal anything!"Stella stepped in as well, her voice filled with concern. "That's right, Gerald. I don't believe Ms. Rye is capable of something like
