Chapter 5

Author: M
Danielle's hand stiffened around the steering wheel, but she didn't deny the accusation right away. After a few moments, she said, "Yes."

Caleb hadn't expected her to admit to it so easily.

Before he could say anything, she continued, "Yale may seem carefree and easygoing, but he's actually very thoughtful and gentle. He's always felt sad that he can't have children of his own. If given the opportunity, I'm certain he'll do an excellent job at raising this child."

"We can always have more children in the future," she said gently, trying to comfort him. "We can keep the next one, and you can raise them yourself. How does that sound?"

Caleb's lips curved up into a cold, bitter smile.

When he didn't argue or make a scene, she simply assumed that he'd agreed to her suggestion. Turning the car in the direction of the auction house, she said, "Let's go pick out some jewelry. You shouldn't keep dwelling on negative thoughts."

He didn't refuse and let her drive him to the auction house. However, the moment they entered the hall, he spotted Yale waiting nearby.

Looking carefree as usual, he walked straight over the moment he saw Danielle and patted her on the shoulder. "Why did you insist on bringing me here, Ellie? I'm not interested in any of this stuff."

They were so comfortable with each other that Caleb felt like a third wheel.

Some time later, the bidders had just taken their seats when a piercing scream suddenly rang through the air.

"Someone's robbing us!"

A group of masked robbers burst into the store with guns. The venue descended into chaos, and people scattered in every direction.

Amid the chaos, one of the robbers grabbed Yale, who was closest to him, and pressed a knife to his throat.

"Hand over the star lot, or I'll kill him right now!" he roared.

Danielle was mortified. Before anyone else could react, she frantically stepped forward to negotiate. "Let him go! Take me instead! I'll be your hostage!"

The robber considered her offer for a moment. Then, he declared, "Throw in another five million dollars, and I'll make the trade!"

"Alright. I'll have the money transferred right away!" Danielle agreed without a second thought.

Then, without even glancing at Caleb, she reached over and shoved the latter toward the knife-wielding criminal without a shred of hesitation. Meanwhile, Caleb couldn't do anything as he stumbled toward the robber and was forced to take Yale's place.

For a moment, Caleb's entire body went rigid.

In Danielle's eyes, his life was worth less than the man she claimed was her close friend.

The robber immediately seized Caleb and pressed the cold blade against his throat. With the slightest pressure, a thin line of blood formed at his throat.

After being rescued, Yale retreated behind Danielle, trembling with fear. His bold, carefree demeanor had vanished completely.

"Don't worry, Caleb! The police will be here soon!"

Danielle was shouting in Caleb's direction, but her eyes never left Yale. She examined him from head to toe, desperate to make sure he hadn't been frightened or hurt.

Just as Caleb had begun to grow numb with despair, Adrian arrived with a large group of police officers. They quickly subdued the robbers and rescued Caleb from being held at knifepoint.

Caleb had narrowly escaped death, but he didn't feel relieved at all. Instead, he was completely heartbroken.

Danielle was too busy comforting Yale, and she hadn't spared Caleb a single glance throughout the entire ordeal. As soon as the authorities subdued the robbers, she rushed Yale straight to a private hospital.

…

Caleb sat alone in his hospital room, looking thin and worn.

"Mr. Graham, everything has been finalized with the divorce lawyer," Adrian quietly reported as he went to Caleb's side. "The process of withdrawing all your shares from Sutton Corporation is also underway. Ms. Sutton should receive the news about the share withdrawal and divorce documents by tomorrow evening."

Soon, Caleb and Naomi held a second wedding ceremony. This time, there was no grand celebration—only their closest friends were invited. The sea breeze was gentle, and Naomi wore a loose, white wedding dress, holding a bouquet of lilies.Caleb got on one knee before her and slipped the ring back onto her finger. His voice caught slightly as he spoke. "Naomi, I used to think that missing my chance with you was the greatest regret of my life. But later, I realized that as long as you're still willing to move forward, I'll still have a chance to walk beside you and see what the future holds. Thank you for believing in me."Naomi's eyes reddened slightly as she looked down at him. "Caleb, thank you for still choosing me."The guests burst into applause.Behind the trees, some distance away, Danielle stood quietly in the shadows. She didn't approach or intrude. She wore a gauzy dress with a slightly worn neckline, but she had carefully ironed it until it was perfectly smooth. She onl

After being discharged from the hospital, Danielle rented an old apartment in the area and made a living doing translation work for a trading company.Once, she had traveled by private jet and stayed in penthouse suites. Now, she squeezed onto crowded buses, wore dresses washed pale with age, and carried home bags of marked-down bread.Half a month later, news came from back home. The last piece of property under her name had been auctioned off.In the screenshot Gideon sent her, the former Sutton residence was listed with its final sale price. That was the home Caleb had personally furnished—the flower rack on the balcony, the rug in the living room, the night light in the nursery that had never been unpacked... In a single auction, they had all become nothing more than assets in the eyes of others.Danielle stared at the screen for a long time. Only when her eyes began to ache did she slowly set her phone face down on the table. She thought she would eventually grow numb to i

When Danielle woke up, the first person she saw wasn't Caleb, but Naomi. Naomi was sitting beside the hospital bed, peeling an apple. Her movements were clumsy, and the peel broke several times.Danielle stared at her for a moment before asking hoarsely, "Where's he?"Without even looking up, Naomi replied, "My husband is resting."My husband. Those two words pricked at Danielle's heart like a needle. She closed her eyes briefly. "Is... Is he okay?"Naomi tossed the badly peeled apple into the trash and replied flatly, "He's fine. You took the knife meant for him, and the doctor said it would've been serious if it had landed even an inch away. But... you had a miscarriage."Danielle's lips curled into a faint, bitter smile. "Did he send you?""Yes." Naomi didn't deny it. "He said you were injured because of him, so he'll cover your medical expenses and the cost of a caregiver. But he doesn't feel comfortable coming to see you."The light in Danielle's eyes slowly faded. She wou

The local court found Danielle guilty of harassment, attempted unlawful restraint, and disruption of public order, so she was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.Throughout those three months, Danielle never had a single peaceful night's sleep. Everything around her felt like a dense, suffocating web, trapping her completely.Whenever she closed her eyes, she saw Caleb's wrist, reddened by her grip, and remembered the resolute look on his face.Late into the night, she would dream of how he used to stay up late revising proposals for her, calluses on his hand from the pen, yet still smiling as he told her, "It's okay. I believe in you."She remembered the first time he drew her into his arms and whispered, "Danielle, I love you."She remembered their wedding day, when he stood before her in his suit and said earnestly, "Danielle, you're the only one I'll ever marry."His love for her had been real—every bit of it. But back then, she had turned a blind eye to it all and tramp

After that night, Danielle couldn't wait any longer. She bought a house near Caleb's gallery and showered him with flowers, jewelry, and all the gifts he used to like but never got to own.Caleb didn't accept a single thing. Everything was sent back intact, some items left completely unopened.Refusing to accept defeat, Danielle had someone contact local media to organize a massive solo exhibition for him. When Caleb found out, he sent back a single message. "I won't participate if the organizer has anything to do with Danielle."His refusal was sharp and absolute, leaving no room for negotiation.Danielle sat in the empty house, watching the returned gifts pile up in her living room, and suddenly burst into laughter. As she laughed, tears began to stream down her face. How had she ever been so sure that Caleb would never leave her?Right then, her phone buzzed with a final notice from her bank back home. The liquidation of her personal assets was complete, and the remaining

Danielle refused to give up.She stopped barging into Caleb's house, choosing instead to watch him from afar every day at a coffee shop across from the gallery.Caleb arrived at 9:00 am and left at 6:00 pm.Sometimes Naomi joined him, and other times he walked back alone along the shore. He would chat with the gallery owner about exhibits, patiently teach children to paint, and offer his umbrella to students caught in the rain. Yet she was no longer part of any of it.That evening, the gallery hosted a small exhibition. One of Caleb's pieces sat right in the center. It depicted a morning sea bathed in golden light, with two figures holding hands in the distance.Danielle stared at it for a long time.Someone nearby asked with a smile, "Mr. Graham, what's the title of this piece?"Standing in the crowd, Caleb answered softly, "New Beginning."A sharp, dull ache hit Danielle's chest. She used to think that Caleb couldn't survive without her, but the truth was, he only truly st
