Chapter 6

Caleb gave a slight nod. "I understand," he said, his voice devoid of emotion.

Even though Yale was completely unharmed, Danielle insisted on putting him through a full medical checkup. She stayed right outside of the examination room the whole time.

Early the next morning, Caleb pulled himself together and prepared to leave.

Only then did Danielle hurry into his hospital room. A trace of guilt flickered across her face as she approached him, her tone laced with a forced sweetness.

"Caleb, I lost my head at yesterday's auction and acted without thinking. I never meant to trade you for Yale. Please don't take it to heart."

Caleb raised his eyes to meet hers, then smiled faintly.

"I understand," he replied, his voice so gentle that it was almost indifferent.

After all, he would soon be leaving for good. There was no point in arguing over who was right or wrong anymore.

Pretending to be generous, he even urged Danielle, "You should go back to Yale. He may seem carefree and tough on the outside, but he's actually quite sensitive. After such a scare, he's going to need your comfort."

His words hit her right where he knew they would.

"Well… Make sure you get some rest," Danielle said perfunctorily.

She didn't even bother asking the doctor about Caleb's condition. Before long, she turned and hurried away, with no intention of staying to keep him company.

Caleb watched her walk away without looking back. His heart had long since grown numb.

He threw back the covers, grabbed the suitcase he'd packed earlier, and headed for the door.

He had barely reached it when the doctor stopped him.

"Where are you going? Your injuries haven't healed yet. If you don't get proper treatment, you could end up with scars."

"It's fine," Caleb replied, smiling faintly. "Let them scar. At least they'll remind me of just how miserable these days have been."

Before the doctor could say another word, Caleb strode out of the hospital, hailed a cab, and headed straight for the airport.

During the ride, he pulled out his phone and sent one final message to Future Danielle.

"Thank you."

He was grateful to her for telling him the truth, helping him see things clearly, and giving him a chance to start over.

When he arrived at the airport, he switched off his phone and strode into the bustling terminal.

Adrian had been waiting for him quite some time.

Caleb handed him the divorce papers along with his phone. "Give these to Danielle. There are some things she deserves to know."

"Sure." Adrian accepted the items before adding softly, "Mr. Graham, everything has been arranged overseas. Someone is already waiting to receive you. It's Ms. Naomi Morgan."

"Naomi Morgan?" Caleb's brows lifted in surprise. "Why her?"

When his mother, Lydia Ford, was still alive, she had arranged a marriage alliance between him and the Morgan family.

Back then, Caleb had been completely devoted to Danielle. Despite his family's objections, he had broken off the engagement on his own and cut ties with the Morgans.

After all the twists and turns, fate had somehow brought him back to where it all began.

"The Morgans heard you were leaving the country and offered to arrange your arrival," Adrian explained.

Caleb's lips curved into a bitter smile.

He had once broken off his engagement for love, only to have his sincerity utterly trampled on in the end.

"Adrian, take good care of yourself," Caleb said. "The deed to the Graham residence is in the safe. Now that I'm leaving and Mom is gone, you can sell the place. Keep the proceeds for your retirement."

Having settled everything, Caleb turned and walked straight to the boarding gate.

Not long afterward, the plane taxied down the runway and soared into the sky.

Through the window, Caleb gazed down at the sprawling city below. The place that held so many regrets grew smaller and smaller until it finally disappeared from view.

From then on, Danielle's happiness and sorrow would have nothing to do with him.

Soon, Caleb and Naomi held a second wedding ceremony. This time, there was no grand celebration—only their closest friends were invited. The sea breeze was gentle, and Naomi wore a loose, white wedding dress, holding a bouquet of lilies.Caleb got on one knee before her and slipped the ring back onto her finger. His voice caught slightly as he spoke. "Naomi, I used to think that missing my chance with you was the greatest regret of my life. But later, I realized that as long as you're still willing to move forward, I'll still have a chance to walk beside you and see what the future holds. Thank you for believing in me."Naomi's eyes reddened slightly as she looked down at him. "Caleb, thank you for still choosing me."The guests burst into applause.Behind the trees, some distance away, Danielle stood quietly in the shadows. She didn't approach or intrude. She wore a gauzy dress with a slightly worn neckline, but she had carefully ironed it until it was perfectly smooth. She onl

After being discharged from the hospital, Danielle rented an old apartment in the area and made a living doing translation work for a trading company.Once, she had traveled by private jet and stayed in penthouse suites. Now, she squeezed onto crowded buses, wore dresses washed pale with age, and carried home bags of marked-down bread.Half a month later, news came from back home. The last piece of property under her name had been auctioned off.In the screenshot Gideon sent her, the former Sutton residence was listed with its final sale price. That was the home Caleb had personally furnished—the flower rack on the balcony, the rug in the living room, the night light in the nursery that had never been unpacked... In a single auction, they had all become nothing more than assets in the eyes of others.Danielle stared at the screen for a long time. Only when her eyes began to ache did she slowly set her phone face down on the table. She thought she would eventually grow numb to i

When Danielle woke up, the first person she saw wasn't Caleb, but Naomi. Naomi was sitting beside the hospital bed, peeling an apple. Her movements were clumsy, and the peel broke several times.Danielle stared at her for a moment before asking hoarsely, "Where's he?"Without even looking up, Naomi replied, "My husband is resting."My husband. Those two words pricked at Danielle's heart like a needle. She closed her eyes briefly. "Is... Is he okay?"Naomi tossed the badly peeled apple into the trash and replied flatly, "He's fine. You took the knife meant for him, and the doctor said it would've been serious if it had landed even an inch away. But... you had a miscarriage."Danielle's lips curled into a faint, bitter smile. "Did he send you?""Yes." Naomi didn't deny it. "He said you were injured because of him, so he'll cover your medical expenses and the cost of a caregiver. But he doesn't feel comfortable coming to see you."The light in Danielle's eyes slowly faded. She wou

The local court found Danielle guilty of harassment, attempted unlawful restraint, and disruption of public order, so she was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.Throughout those three months, Danielle never had a single peaceful night's sleep. Everything around her felt like a dense, suffocating web, trapping her completely.Whenever she closed her eyes, she saw Caleb's wrist, reddened by her grip, and remembered the resolute look on his face.Late into the night, she would dream of how he used to stay up late revising proposals for her, calluses on his hand from the pen, yet still smiling as he told her, "It's okay. I believe in you."She remembered the first time he drew her into his arms and whispered, "Danielle, I love you."She remembered their wedding day, when he stood before her in his suit and said earnestly, "Danielle, you're the only one I'll ever marry."His love for her had been real—every bit of it. But back then, she had turned a blind eye to it all and tramp

After that night, Danielle couldn't wait any longer. She bought a house near Caleb's gallery and showered him with flowers, jewelry, and all the gifts he used to like but never got to own.Caleb didn't accept a single thing. Everything was sent back intact, some items left completely unopened.Refusing to accept defeat, Danielle had someone contact local media to organize a massive solo exhibition for him. When Caleb found out, he sent back a single message. "I won't participate if the organizer has anything to do with Danielle."His refusal was sharp and absolute, leaving no room for negotiation.Danielle sat in the empty house, watching the returned gifts pile up in her living room, and suddenly burst into laughter. As she laughed, tears began to stream down her face. How had she ever been so sure that Caleb would never leave her?Right then, her phone buzzed with a final notice from her bank back home. The liquidation of her personal assets was complete, and the remaining

Danielle refused to give up.She stopped barging into Caleb's house, choosing instead to watch him from afar every day at a coffee shop across from the gallery.Caleb arrived at 9:00 am and left at 6:00 pm.Sometimes Naomi joined him, and other times he walked back alone along the shore. He would chat with the gallery owner about exhibits, patiently teach children to paint, and offer his umbrella to students caught in the rain. Yet she was no longer part of any of it.That evening, the gallery hosted a small exhibition. One of Caleb's pieces sat right in the center. It depicted a morning sea bathed in golden light, with two figures holding hands in the distance.Danielle stared at it for a long time.Someone nearby asked with a smile, "Mr. Graham, what's the title of this piece?"Standing in the crowd, Caleb answered softly, "New Beginning."A sharp, dull ache hit Danielle's chest. She used to think that Caleb couldn't survive without her, but the truth was, he only truly st
