Chapter 4

Author: Ann Chase
After she finished texting, Cosmo glanced around the marital home.

Not only did she and Julian pick out this house together, but she'd also designed the interior herself.

She had poured almost all of her love into this house. Never did she imagine that she and Julian wouldn't even spend a single day in it before she had to sell it.

Cosmo began packing, ready to leave at any moment.

Her phone buzzed. It was a message from Julian.

"Do you know Selene had a miscarriage because of your tantrum?"

Cosmo's hands were trembling as she read the message.

Miscarriage? She couldn't believe that Selene was already pregnant with Julian's child.

"So what? What does that have to do with me?"

Julian replied quickly, "If you hadn't insisted on making a scene on what was supposed to be a happy day, Selene wouldn't have gotten so worked up.

"If you hadn't kept us out, she never would've collapsed from heatstroke and lost the baby. Even now, Cosmo, you still won't admit it's your fault."

Reading his message, Cosmo nearly laughed out of sheer exasperation.

"Who exactly was it that made a scene on the big day? Julian, you and Selene betrayed me at the same time, and then you exposed yourselves on my wedding day.

"Surely you don't expect me to play the fool and go through with marrying you even after finding out you two were together?"

"And why not? If you love me, you should accept everything about me. Besides, you and Selene were such good friends. So, why couldn't you just turn a blind eye and pretend nothing ever happened?

"Did you really have to make such a mess of things and cost her the baby just so you could feel satisfied?"

A chill spread from the bottom of Cosmo's heart to every corner of her body. She stared blankly at the message, unable to react at all anymore.

She had loved Julian for so many years.

In her eyes, he had always been a gentle, refined, and elegant young man. He was tender, thoughtful, and had a real soft spot for cats and dogs. When he wore a white shirt, he looked as clean as an angel from above.

It wasn't until today that she finally saw his true colors. In a way, she had Selene to thank for it. Had it not been for her, Cosmo would've plunged into an abyss she could never climb out of.

Even though Cosmo didn't reply, Julian kept messaging her.

"I've already sent Gloria and the others to pick you up and bring you to the hospital. You have to apologize to Selene for what happened today. I've moved the wedding ceremony to tonight. Once Selene forgives you, we'll continue with the wedding."

"What a psycho," Cosmo muttered, tossing her phone aside.

She tore the wedding dress Julian had custom-made for her into pieces, then dumped all their pre-wedding photos into the trash can outside the door.

There was no way Cosmo was going through with the wedding. As far as she was concerned, Julian could dream on. In fact, she would rather marry a pig or a dog than ever marry a scumbag like him.

After throwing out the trash, Cosmo was about to head back inside when a BMW pulled up in front of her.

Gloria led a group out of the car and seized Cosmo's hand, intent on taking her to the hospital.

"Cosmo, I'm sure you've heard about Selene's miscarriage. A child died because of your tantrum! Julian said you have to go to the hospital and apologize to Selene right now.

"If she forgives you, he'll still marry you. If not, you can forget about ever marrying Julian."

Cosmo had rarely seen Gloria look so furious. In fact, this was the first time Gloria had spoken to her like this. It would be a lie to say it didn't hurt, but what she felt more than anything was a chill in her heart.

She shook off Gloria's hand and said, "And what if I refuse to go? I didn't get her pregnant, nor did I make her ruin my wedding. Her miscarriage is her own fault—it has nothing to do with me!"

"You still have the audacity to act so self-righteous?"

No sooner had the person spoken than Cosmo was yanked around and dealt a stinging slap. Her cheek stung with a fiery pain, and she looked up in disbelief at the woman before her.

It was none other than Cathleen.

Cosmo couldn't bear to listen either. She walked over to the bench and sat down, her mind in complete turmoil. She clearly hated Cathleen. And yet, in that moment, she was still terrified that Cathleen might actually die. After what felt like an eternity, the operating room doors finally opened. The doctor walked out and removed his mask."Who here is the patient's family?" he asked.Cosmo walked over and answered in an eerily calm tone, "I'm her daughter.""I'm sorry, but we've done everything we could. The patient ingested too much poison, leading to complete kidney failure. There's nothing more we can do. Please accept my condolences.""No!" Gloria was even more distraught than Cosmo. She rushed forward and grabbed the doctor's hand. Then, she dropped to her knees, begging, "Doctor, please save her. My friend's father died a long time ago, so she only has her mother left. The two of them depend on each other. If her mother dies, how is she supposed to live?"The doctor sho

When she heard the voice message, Cosmo laughed."Stop messing around, Julian. Since when did you become so childish? You'd even get someone to put on a show with you for something like this? Besides, I've already cut ties with my mom, so using her to trick me won't work."Cosmo was about to go back inside when Julian broke down and dropped to his knees."I'm telling the truth! I'm really not lying to you! Mrs. Foster is really poisoned! Cosmo, I admit I've lied to you many times before, but I swear on my lif—this time it's real."I told Selene I wanted to break up with her, but she refused to accept it. That's why she did something so drastic. Please come back with me. I'm afraid that if we're too late, you really won't get to see Mrs. Foster ever again."While Cosmo's mind went completely blank, a warm hand grasped hers.Carlton looked at her and said emphatically, "Don't be afraid, Cosmo. No matter what happens, I'll be by your side. Whether Julian's telling the truth or not,

In the apartment, Cosmo carefully tended to the wound on Carlton's cheek with a cotton swab dipped in iodine."Does it hurt?" Cosmo looked up at Carlton, her eyes gradually turning red. "I'm sorry, Mr. Stark. I didn't know Julian would resort to violence. If I had known, I never would have let you pretend to be my boyfriend.""Silly woman, why are you crying? I don't blame you at all." Carlton smiled at her gently. "Besides, to a man, a little injury like this is nothing.""If you think it's too much trouble, I won't come to the office starting tomorrow. I can resign, because I have a feeling Julian will come looking for me again. When that happens, it'll only cause you trouble. So, I might as well leave before it comes to that."Cosmo meant what she said. Although she really liked her current job, based on her understanding of Julian, there was no way he would give up so easily. In other words, he would definitely keep harassing her."You think I'd let go of a woman I admire just

"Fiancee?" Raising an eyebrow, Carlton reached out and pulled Cosmo into his arms. Then, he leaned close to her ear and whispered softly, "Since when did you become this man's fiancee? I thought you were my girlfriend."His thin lips brushed against her earlobe. A warm, tingling sensation shot through Cosmo like an electric current, making her shudder violently."Julian's insane, so you don't need to bother with him. You're the only one in my heart," Cosmo replied."Now that's my girl." Carlton turned to look at Julian, whose face had long since darkened. "You heard that? Cosmo said I'm the only one in her heart.""That's impossible! Cosmo, are you still angry about me and Selene? I've cut things off with her—we've broken up. I hired a private investigator and searched for days before I finally tracked you down here."I really know I was wrong now. Please stop being difficult and just come back with me. We can hold the wedding again, and I swear I definitely won't let you down thi

One day after work, a colleague suddenly screamed, "Come look! There's a handsome guy downstairs holding a bouquet of roses. I wonder who they're for.""Let me see! Damn, he's really handsome! Who in our company is dating such a handsome guy and keeping it a secret?""Handsome? Please—he's nothing compared to Mr. Stark and Irwin.""Get out of here. Men at this level are rare, okay?"The colleagues chatted excitedly, scrambling to look out the window.Someone even called Cosmo over to look."Cosmo, come take a look too. He's really handsome.""No, thanks. I still have a few orders to design," Cosmo said, shaking her head before turning back to her work.Irwin walked over to take a look. "Let me see how handsome he is."After seeing the man downstairs, Irwin's expression turned stern."It's him.""Irwin, you know him?" one of his colleagues asked."You guys can head out—unless you're looking for overtime?"The moment Irwin said that, everyone scattered.Only after seeing th
