Chapter 3

Author: Ann Chase
"That's enough of your willfulness, Cosmo. We really have to get going. The hotel has already called. If we don't get married, everyone will think Selene is the one who ruined the wedding. How is she supposed to hold her head up after that?" Julian chastised.

Cosmo turned to leave, but Julian grabbed her arm. The man who had always been dignified and self-possessed lost his temper at her for the first time—and it was all because of Selene.

"Once this gets out, Selene will be branded as a homewrecker. There's absolutely no way I'll let that happen."

"What did you just say?" Cosmo laughed, but tears streamed down her cheeks.

"So, you're choosing to go through with the wedding because you're afraid people will call Selene a homewrecker? Do you honestly think what she's done doesn't make her one?"

Julian sighed and said, "No, I'm marrying you because I love you. Why else would I propose or go through with a wedding? In my heart, the most important person has always been you and only you."

"Love me? You love me, so you give me freebies as birthday gifts and sleep with Selene on the very day you propose to me? Even knowing full well I have a thing about cleanliness, you still did it with her on our marital bed? Julian, don't you think your so-called love is revolting?"

Julian lost all patience.

"Selene was just being playful—she only said it as a joke. Why do you have to keep harping on it?"

"Shut up, Julian. In any case, the wedding's off. Since you won't let me leave, all of you can get out then."

Cosmo shoved them out like a madwoman. Even Cathleen was no exception—she, too, was pushed out of the house.

"Cosmo, stop making a scene and let me in," Cathleen urged.

"Come on, Cosmo, it's so hot out here. Hurry, let us in," Selene begged.

"Cosmo, I'm giving you three minutes. If you don't open this door, we're completely done!" Julian threatened.

They pounded on the door until it rattled, but Cosmo never opened it.

The commotion had started sometime after 9:00 am, and now it was past 10:00 am.

It was the height of summer, with the temperature nearing 104 degrees Fahrenheit outside.

Refusing to believe Cosmo could be this ruthless, Julian kept hammering on the door.

"Cosmo, open up! There's still time to get to the hotel, or all that money will go down the drain."

Selene shouted through her tears as well, "Cosmo, I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have exposed my relationship with Julian today. But I truly know I was wrong now. Don't be like this and just open the door."

The moment she finished shouting, someone screamed, "Selene, what's wrong?"

Selene collapsed in Julian's arms.

"I'm so hot. My head is spinning, and my stomach hurts so much."

"Cosmo, open this door right now. Selene is suffering from a heatstroke. Open up! I'll never forgive you if anything happens to her!" Julian roared.

Inside, Cosmo let out a cold chuckle.

"Heatstroke? Why doesn't she just drop dead?"

"You'd actually go so far as to wish her dead? Cosmo, I never took you for someone like that. I'm really disappointed in you!"

Julian scooped Selene up into the wedding car and rushed her to the hospital, with the whole group trailing behind.

Once they had left, Cosmo called her friend in Califax, Irwin Blackwell.

"Irwin, didn't you say the design department in your company was short-staffed? Do you think I'd have a shot?"

Irwin was somewhat surprised.

"Of course. You know I've always wanted you to come help us out here. But I heard you're getting married today. What happened? Did you call it off?"

"Julian cheated, so yes. Wait for me. Once I've dealt with everything here, I'll come find you."

"Alright. Give me a call then, and I'll come pick you up."

Next, Cosmo contacted Riley Lowe, the agent who had sold her the house.

"Hi, please help me sell my house as soon as possible."

"Ms. Foster, isn't this the place you were going to live in after marrying your fiance? Are you sure you want to sell it?"

"Yup. Cash upfront would be best. I'm fine with taking a hit on the price. I just need it done fast."

"Alright, I'll get in touch with you the moment I have any news."

Cosmo couldn't bear to listen either. She walked over to the bench and sat down, her mind in complete turmoil. She clearly hated Cathleen. And yet, in that moment, she was still terrified that Cathleen might actually die. After what felt like an eternity, the operating room doors finally opened. The doctor walked out and removed his mask."Who here is the patient's family?" he asked.Cosmo walked over and answered in an eerily calm tone, "I'm her daughter.""I'm sorry, but we've done everything we could. The patient ingested too much poison, leading to complete kidney failure. There's nothing more we can do. Please accept my condolences.""No!" Gloria was even more distraught than Cosmo. She rushed forward and grabbed the doctor's hand. Then, she dropped to her knees, begging, "Doctor, please save her. My friend's father died a long time ago, so she only has her mother left. The two of them depend on each other. If her mother dies, how is she supposed to live?"The doctor sho

When she heard the voice message, Cosmo laughed."Stop messing around, Julian. Since when did you become so childish? You'd even get someone to put on a show with you for something like this? Besides, I've already cut ties with my mom, so using her to trick me won't work."Cosmo was about to go back inside when Julian broke down and dropped to his knees."I'm telling the truth! I'm really not lying to you! Mrs. Foster is really poisoned! Cosmo, I admit I've lied to you many times before, but I swear on my lif—this time it's real."I told Selene I wanted to break up with her, but she refused to accept it. That's why she did something so drastic. Please come back with me. I'm afraid that if we're too late, you really won't get to see Mrs. Foster ever again."While Cosmo's mind went completely blank, a warm hand grasped hers.Carlton looked at her and said emphatically, "Don't be afraid, Cosmo. No matter what happens, I'll be by your side. Whether Julian's telling the truth or not,

In the apartment, Cosmo carefully tended to the wound on Carlton's cheek with a cotton swab dipped in iodine."Does it hurt?" Cosmo looked up at Carlton, her eyes gradually turning red. "I'm sorry, Mr. Stark. I didn't know Julian would resort to violence. If I had known, I never would have let you pretend to be my boyfriend.""Silly woman, why are you crying? I don't blame you at all." Carlton smiled at her gently. "Besides, to a man, a little injury like this is nothing.""If you think it's too much trouble, I won't come to the office starting tomorrow. I can resign, because I have a feeling Julian will come looking for me again. When that happens, it'll only cause you trouble. So, I might as well leave before it comes to that."Cosmo meant what she said. Although she really liked her current job, based on her understanding of Julian, there was no way he would give up so easily. In other words, he would definitely keep harassing her."You think I'd let go of a woman I admire just

"Fiancee?" Raising an eyebrow, Carlton reached out and pulled Cosmo into his arms. Then, he leaned close to her ear and whispered softly, "Since when did you become this man's fiancee? I thought you were my girlfriend."His thin lips brushed against her earlobe. A warm, tingling sensation shot through Cosmo like an electric current, making her shudder violently."Julian's insane, so you don't need to bother with him. You're the only one in my heart," Cosmo replied."Now that's my girl." Carlton turned to look at Julian, whose face had long since darkened. "You heard that? Cosmo said I'm the only one in her heart.""That's impossible! Cosmo, are you still angry about me and Selene? I've cut things off with her—we've broken up. I hired a private investigator and searched for days before I finally tracked you down here."I really know I was wrong now. Please stop being difficult and just come back with me. We can hold the wedding again, and I swear I definitely won't let you down thi

One day after work, a colleague suddenly screamed, "Come look! There's a handsome guy downstairs holding a bouquet of roses. I wonder who they're for.""Let me see! Damn, he's really handsome! Who in our company is dating such a handsome guy and keeping it a secret?""Handsome? Please—he's nothing compared to Mr. Stark and Irwin.""Get out of here. Men at this level are rare, okay?"The colleagues chatted excitedly, scrambling to look out the window.Someone even called Cosmo over to look."Cosmo, come take a look too. He's really handsome.""No, thanks. I still have a few orders to design," Cosmo said, shaking her head before turning back to her work.Irwin walked over to take a look. "Let me see how handsome he is."After seeing the man downstairs, Irwin's expression turned stern."It's him.""Irwin, you know him?" one of his colleagues asked."You guys can head out—unless you're looking for overtime?"The moment Irwin said that, everyone scattered.Only after seeing th

"No, I don't want it!" Mia sobbed hysterically, but no one came to her defense.People started talking about Cosmo behind her back."What's so special about Cosmo anyway? Why is Mr. Stark so good to her?""I know, right? I've hardly ever seen Mr. Stark show this much interest in any woman.""Could it be love at first sight?""Irwin, do you know something?"Irwin just smiled and said nothing as he watched Carlton and Cosmo walk away. The truth was, Carlton had known Cosmo for years.Back in college, whenever Irwin and Cosmo went out together, Carlton would always have his eyes on Cosmo. Over time, he fell for her. But she already had a boyfriend back then. So, even though he had feelings for her, Carlton never confessed. After graduation, Carlton and Irwin founded a design company together.By chance, Carlton came across Cosmo's work in a magazine.
