Chapter 6

Author: Ann Chase
Cosmo realized there was no getting through to Julian. She pushed his hands away and looked up.

"Can't you understand what I'm saying?" she questioned seriously. "I said I won't apologize to Selene! If anything, she should be the one apologizing to me!"

"You're downright heartless!" Julian was instantly enraged. He grabbed her by the throat and snarled viciously, "You're going to apologize today whether you like it or not! Because of you, Selene won't eat or drink. How can you sit here perfectly at ease when she's falling apart?"

Her throat ached from his grip. Cosmo looked at the man in front of her, who was so cruel to her now, and felt nothing but numbness inside.

She remembered that when she was little, Julian had stood up for her when a classmate bullied her. He pinned the kid to the ground and beat him, then warned every classmate watching never to mess with Cosmo.

Their teacher, Thelma Ortega, called Julian to the office and told him he wasn't allowed to hit his classmates, only for him to say, "I don't care. I'll beat anyone who bullies Cosmo!"

Ms. Ortega was so angry that she gave him detention. When asked whether he'd still hit his classmates in the future, Julian held his head high and answered, "Yes, I won't let anyone bully Cosmo!"

After that, all through middle school and high school, no one dared to bully Cosmo.

But now, the very man who'd once protected her had become the one who hurt her.

"Julian, don't waste your breath on Cosmo. Just drag her over there. Selene's health is what matters most right now," Gloria urged from the side.

"Yes, Julian, take her away," Cathleen murmured as well. "Do whatever it takes to get Selene to forgive her. Plenty of relatives are still at the hotel to see you two get married, so you'd better not leave them hanging again tonight."

"Come with me!" Julian ordered, roughly dragging Cosmo to Selene's hospital room.

The moment Selene, who was lying in bed, saw Cosmo, she became utterly hysterical. She climbed down from the bed and knelt on the floor, slapping herself across the face again and again.

"I'm sorry, Cosmo. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have betrayed you. But I'm paying for it now—my baby's gone. Cosmo, my baby with Julian is gone! I never meant to deceive you.

"I was going to hide it from all of you for the rest of my life, but I found out I was pregnant when I went to your place this morning. I didn't have a choice! I really didn't!

"I'm in the wrong here. I was jealous that you two were getting married today and that you'd have a wedding of the century. Meanwhile, I was like a rat lurking in a filthy gutter, only able to steal your happiness from the shadows.

"Cosmo, I really am sorry. Please forgive me."

Watching Selene slap her own face until it was swollen and disfigured, Julian pulled her into his arms and comforted her tenderly.

"There, there. It's not your fault, Selene. It's Cosmo's. Look, she's here. She's come to apologize to you."

"Really?"

Selene seemed a little unhinged, but Cosmo couldn't be bothered to figure out whether she was faking it or genuinely losing it.

Instead, she just stared at the two of them tangled together and said flatly, "Yes, I've come to apologize. To make up for it, I'll give you tonight's wedding."

Julian stiffened at those words.

"Cosmo, what are you talking about?"

"I said, I'm letting Selene be the bride at tonight's wedding."

"Really?" Selene lifted her tear-streaked face. "Cosmo, are you really giving the wedding to me?"

"Yup," Cosmo replied with a nod. She then slipped the wedding ring off her own finger and slipped it onto Selene's ring finger.

"Here's the wedding ring—it's yours. But I've already cut up the wedding dress, so have Julian take you to buy a new one."

Cosmo couldn't bear to listen either. She walked over to the bench and sat down, her mind in complete turmoil. She clearly hated Cathleen. And yet, in that moment, she was still terrified that Cathleen might actually die. After what felt like an eternity, the operating room doors finally opened. The doctor walked out and removed his mask."Who here is the patient's family?" he asked.Cosmo walked over and answered in an eerily calm tone, "I'm her daughter.""I'm sorry, but we've done everything we could. The patient ingested too much poison, leading to complete kidney failure. There's nothing more we can do. Please accept my condolences.""No!" Gloria was even more distraught than Cosmo. She rushed forward and grabbed the doctor's hand. Then, she dropped to her knees, begging, "Doctor, please save her. My friend's father died a long time ago, so she only has her mother left. The two of them depend on each other. If her mother dies, how is she supposed to live?"The doctor sho

When she heard the voice message, Cosmo laughed."Stop messing around, Julian. Since when did you become so childish? You'd even get someone to put on a show with you for something like this? Besides, I've already cut ties with my mom, so using her to trick me won't work."Cosmo was about to go back inside when Julian broke down and dropped to his knees."I'm telling the truth! I'm really not lying to you! Mrs. Foster is really poisoned! Cosmo, I admit I've lied to you many times before, but I swear on my lif—this time it's real."I told Selene I wanted to break up with her, but she refused to accept it. That's why she did something so drastic. Please come back with me. I'm afraid that if we're too late, you really won't get to see Mrs. Foster ever again."While Cosmo's mind went completely blank, a warm hand grasped hers.Carlton looked at her and said emphatically, "Don't be afraid, Cosmo. No matter what happens, I'll be by your side. Whether Julian's telling the truth or not,

In the apartment, Cosmo carefully tended to the wound on Carlton's cheek with a cotton swab dipped in iodine."Does it hurt?" Cosmo looked up at Carlton, her eyes gradually turning red. "I'm sorry, Mr. Stark. I didn't know Julian would resort to violence. If I had known, I never would have let you pretend to be my boyfriend.""Silly woman, why are you crying? I don't blame you at all." Carlton smiled at her gently. "Besides, to a man, a little injury like this is nothing.""If you think it's too much trouble, I won't come to the office starting tomorrow. I can resign, because I have a feeling Julian will come looking for me again. When that happens, it'll only cause you trouble. So, I might as well leave before it comes to that."Cosmo meant what she said. Although she really liked her current job, based on her understanding of Julian, there was no way he would give up so easily. In other words, he would definitely keep harassing her."You think I'd let go of a woman I admire just

"Fiancee?" Raising an eyebrow, Carlton reached out and pulled Cosmo into his arms. Then, he leaned close to her ear and whispered softly, "Since when did you become this man's fiancee? I thought you were my girlfriend."His thin lips brushed against her earlobe. A warm, tingling sensation shot through Cosmo like an electric current, making her shudder violently."Julian's insane, so you don't need to bother with him. You're the only one in my heart," Cosmo replied."Now that's my girl." Carlton turned to look at Julian, whose face had long since darkened. "You heard that? Cosmo said I'm the only one in her heart.""That's impossible! Cosmo, are you still angry about me and Selene? I've cut things off with her—we've broken up. I hired a private investigator and searched for days before I finally tracked you down here."I really know I was wrong now. Please stop being difficult and just come back with me. We can hold the wedding again, and I swear I definitely won't let you down thi

One day after work, a colleague suddenly screamed, "Come look! There's a handsome guy downstairs holding a bouquet of roses. I wonder who they're for.""Let me see! Damn, he's really handsome! Who in our company is dating such a handsome guy and keeping it a secret?""Handsome? Please—he's nothing compared to Mr. Stark and Irwin.""Get out of here. Men at this level are rare, okay?"The colleagues chatted excitedly, scrambling to look out the window.Someone even called Cosmo over to look."Cosmo, come take a look too. He's really handsome.""No, thanks. I still have a few orders to design," Cosmo said, shaking her head before turning back to her work.Irwin walked over to take a look. "Let me see how handsome he is."After seeing the man downstairs, Irwin's expression turned stern."It's him.""Irwin, you know him?" one of his colleagues asked."You guys can head out—unless you're looking for overtime?"The moment Irwin said that, everyone scattered.Only after seeing th
