Chapter 7

Author: Ann Chase
"Cosmo, this is our wedding we're talking about, and you're just going to give it to Selene?" Julian grabbed hold of Cosmo.

"Stop this right now. I only asked you to apologize—I never said to give up the wedding too. The person I want to marry has always been you."

"It's just a wedding. It's not like that makes you husband and wife in the eyes of the law. We'll still be the ones registering our marriage at the city hall tomorrow," Cosmo explained with a smile.

"She's right, Julian. Since Cosmo's already said so, what are you still hesitating for?"

Gloria finally broke into a smile. She looped her arm through Cosmo's and nodded in approval.

"Cosmo, you did the right thing here. Selene lost her child because of you, so it's only right that you make it up to her with a wedding."

The others chimed in as well.

"Selene, haven't you always wanted to be with Julian openly? After this wedding, you two won't have to hide your relationship anymore."

"Really?" Selene looked at Cosmo, still unable to quite believe it. "Cosmo, does this mean you're okay with me and Julian being together?"

Cosmo held back her disgust and kept a smile on her face.

"Yes. After all, one of you is my best friend and the other is the person I love the most. So, how could I bear to lose either of you?"

Selene burst into tears of joy.

Julian, just as overcome, pulled her into his arms.

"You're the best, Cosmo. I love you. I can promise you that the person I love most will always be you and you only. Once the wedding is over, we'll go to the city hall first thing tomorrow morning to register our marriage."

"Okay," Cosmo replied with a nod. "I still have some matters to attend to, so I'll be going now."

Julian was a little reluctant to let her go. "Will you come to the wedding tonight?"

"I'd rather not go. It'd hurt too much to watch." Cosmo turned and gave Julian one last look. "Julian, I wish you happiness."

With that, she left without looking back.

As he watched her walk away resolutely, Julian couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. He moved to go after Cosmo, but Selene clung to him tightly.

"This is wonderful, Julian. We can finally be together forever."

Once she'd left the room, Cosmo hurried over to Cathleen's ward. She had originally wanted to ask whether Cathleen was willing to leave with her. But the moment she arrived, she heard Cathleen on the phone.

"That's great. Seeing as I've always treated Selene as my own daughter, I'll attend tonight's wedding as her mother.

"No, Cosmo won't be angry. After all, it was her own idea—surely she isn't going to go back on it now.

"It's fine. Don't worry about her. All that matters is that Selene is happy."

The moment Cosmo heard this, whatever familial love she had left in her heart was severed for good. She lowered her head and smiled, the light in her eyes gradually dimming.

Since Cathleen had chosen Selene as her daughter, then Cosmo would grant her that.

Finding Cathleen's smile glaring, Cosmo withdrew her gaze and turned to leave the hospital. No sooner had she taken a few steps than she received a message from Riley.

"Ms. Foster, a buyer has offered three million dollars for your house. Do you think you can transfer the title today?"

"Yes. I'll be right there."

Cosmo rushed over and signed the contract with the buyer. With that done, she handed over the keys. Then, she took her suitcase and hailed a taxi to the airport.

Her flight wasn't until the next morning. Rather than get a hotel, she just waited it out at the airport for 15 hours straight.

That night, she received a video from Gloria.

The wedding venue was bustling with excitement.

Wearing a pure white wedding dress, Selene walked slowly toward the stage. And standing at the center of the stage was the man Cosmo had dreamed of marrying.

Cathleen sat at the main table below, her eyes brimming with tears for the two people who had betrayed Cosmo.

Gloria had also sent a message.

"Cosmo, thank you for letting Julian and Selene be together. You'll always be my best friend."

Cosmo let out a mocking laugh after reading the message.

Fiance, best friend, friends, and even her own mother—she was done with them all.

"Attention passengers, this is the final boarding call for Califax."

After blocking everyone, Cosmo rose from her chair. Then, she picked up her suitcase and walked resolutely to the security checkpoint.

She mentally bade Julian farewell. She never wanted to see any of those scumbags for as long as she lived.

Cosmo couldn't bear to listen either. She walked over to the bench and sat down, her mind in complete turmoil. She clearly hated Cathleen. And yet, in that moment, she was still terrified that Cathleen might actually die. After what felt like an eternity, the operating room doors finally opened. The doctor walked out and removed his mask."Who here is the patient's family?" he asked.Cosmo walked over and answered in an eerily calm tone, "I'm her daughter.""I'm sorry, but we've done everything we could. The patient ingested too much poison, leading to complete kidney failure. There's nothing more we can do. Please accept my condolences.""No!" Gloria was even more distraught than Cosmo. She rushed forward and grabbed the doctor's hand. Then, she dropped to her knees, begging, "Doctor, please save her. My friend's father died a long time ago, so she only has her mother left. The two of them depend on each other. If her mother dies, how is she supposed to live?"The doctor sho

When she heard the voice message, Cosmo laughed."Stop messing around, Julian. Since when did you become so childish? You'd even get someone to put on a show with you for something like this? Besides, I've already cut ties with my mom, so using her to trick me won't work."Cosmo was about to go back inside when Julian broke down and dropped to his knees."I'm telling the truth! I'm really not lying to you! Mrs. Foster is really poisoned! Cosmo, I admit I've lied to you many times before, but I swear on my lif—this time it's real."I told Selene I wanted to break up with her, but she refused to accept it. That's why she did something so drastic. Please come back with me. I'm afraid that if we're too late, you really won't get to see Mrs. Foster ever again."While Cosmo's mind went completely blank, a warm hand grasped hers.Carlton looked at her and said emphatically, "Don't be afraid, Cosmo. No matter what happens, I'll be by your side. Whether Julian's telling the truth or not,

In the apartment, Cosmo carefully tended to the wound on Carlton's cheek with a cotton swab dipped in iodine."Does it hurt?" Cosmo looked up at Carlton, her eyes gradually turning red. "I'm sorry, Mr. Stark. I didn't know Julian would resort to violence. If I had known, I never would have let you pretend to be my boyfriend.""Silly woman, why are you crying? I don't blame you at all." Carlton smiled at her gently. "Besides, to a man, a little injury like this is nothing.""If you think it's too much trouble, I won't come to the office starting tomorrow. I can resign, because I have a feeling Julian will come looking for me again. When that happens, it'll only cause you trouble. So, I might as well leave before it comes to that."Cosmo meant what she said. Although she really liked her current job, based on her understanding of Julian, there was no way he would give up so easily. In other words, he would definitely keep harassing her."You think I'd let go of a woman I admire just

"Fiancee?" Raising an eyebrow, Carlton reached out and pulled Cosmo into his arms. Then, he leaned close to her ear and whispered softly, "Since when did you become this man's fiancee? I thought you were my girlfriend."His thin lips brushed against her earlobe. A warm, tingling sensation shot through Cosmo like an electric current, making her shudder violently."Julian's insane, so you don't need to bother with him. You're the only one in my heart," Cosmo replied."Now that's my girl." Carlton turned to look at Julian, whose face had long since darkened. "You heard that? Cosmo said I'm the only one in her heart.""That's impossible! Cosmo, are you still angry about me and Selene? I've cut things off with her—we've broken up. I hired a private investigator and searched for days before I finally tracked you down here."I really know I was wrong now. Please stop being difficult and just come back with me. We can hold the wedding again, and I swear I definitely won't let you down thi

One day after work, a colleague suddenly screamed, "Come look! There's a handsome guy downstairs holding a bouquet of roses. I wonder who they're for.""Let me see! Damn, he's really handsome! Who in our company is dating such a handsome guy and keeping it a secret?""Handsome? Please—he's nothing compared to Mr. Stark and Irwin.""Get out of here. Men at this level are rare, okay?"The colleagues chatted excitedly, scrambling to look out the window.Someone even called Cosmo over to look."Cosmo, come take a look too. He's really handsome.""No, thanks. I still have a few orders to design," Cosmo said, shaking her head before turning back to her work.Irwin walked over to take a look. "Let me see how handsome he is."After seeing the man downstairs, Irwin's expression turned stern."It's him.""Irwin, you know him?" one of his colleagues asked."You guys can head out—unless you're looking for overtime?"The moment Irwin said that, everyone scattered.Only after seeing th
