Chapter 1

The hotel staff knocked on the door and gently reminded me that the room reservation would only be held until 2:00 pm.

Using the wall for support, I forced myself to stand. My vision blurred and darkened. Before I could say anything, an employee from the bridal boutique walked in just as I had finished packing my ID and medical records into my travel bag.

"Mr. Griffin, the suit was ordered by Ms. Sullivan, but she only paid the deposit."

She looked uncomfortable as she continued, "Ms. Sullivan just informed us that you will be responsible for the remaining balance. The total is 3800 dollars."

At that moment, my phone rang. Lily Sullivan's voice was as gentle as ever.

"Ryan, did you watch the livestream?"

"I did."

"Good. Then, at least you understand why I changed grooms at the last minute."

She spoke softly, the same way she had when we were kids and she'd clean the scrapes on my knees; the same way she had listened to me vent about work after we'd grown up.

After a pause, she added, "The suit looks good on you. I've already paid for part of it, so it's not like I completely wasted your morning."

So, that was how she saw it. She'd exchange wedding rings with my brother, then come back and spend the night with me, as if everyone won.

My stomach suddenly churned violently. For a moment, I couldn't tell which pain was worse—the one in my abdomen or the one in my chest.

I covered my mouth, but the metallic taste of blood still rose up my throat.

"You expect me to pay 3800 dollars?"

"Henry has suffered so much over the years. Weddings are expensive, and you're his brother. What's wrong with helping out?"

Henry Griffin's voice sounded in the background.

"Lily, don't blame Ryan. He waited all morning. He must feel terrible."

"You're so considerate."

Only after comforting Henry did Lily say to me, "Come home for dinner later. Mom and Dad are hosting a welcome-home party for Henry. Apologize to him face-to-face, and we can put all this behind us."

"And then what?"

"Then, we keep living our lives." Her tone was matter-of-fact. "A wedding is just a ceremony. You're still the one I'm legally married to. I never said I was leaving you."

The call ended. The boutique employee stared awkwardly at the suit I was wearing.

I only had 4100 dollars left in my bank account. That money was supposed to pay for my hospitalization. However, none of this was the employee's fault.

After settling the balance, I changed back into my own clothes and left the hotel.

My sister Sarah Griffin's car was waiting at the curb. The window rolled down, and she jerked her chin toward the back seat.

"Get in."

"I need to go to the hospital," I said.

"Today is Henry's first family dinner since coming home. Don't ruin it."

She pushed the car door open from inside. When I didn't move, she frowned.

"Ryan, Lily may have lied to you, but she did it for Henry. You owe him ten years of his life. It's just a wedding. Is it really worth running away from home over?"

Once, when I was little and had a fever, Sarah had carried me across three blocks to see a doctor. She had been drenched in sweat, yet she'd laughed and said I weighed less than her school backpack.

Now, she couldn't even be bothered to get out of the car and help me stand.

"Sarah, I don't feel well."

"You've always been like this. Anytime something doesn't go your way, you get a headache."

Her tone softened slightly. "Be good. After dinner, I'll take you to the hospital, okay?"

Be good, she told me, in the same cajoling tone she had used when we were children.

Clinging to the last scraps of hope, I got into the car.

However, the car didn't head to my parents' house. Instead, it stopped in front of the apartment Lily and I had bought together.

Wedding decorations still covered the front door. Inside the entryway sat two pairs of matching house slippers. One belonged to Lily, and the other was Henry's size.

In the living room, Mom was helping Lily remove his boutonniere.

"You must be exhausted after today. Let me massage your shoulders."

Dad was busy arranging wedding favors into gift boxes. When he saw me enter, he barely glanced up.

"Finally. Go change into your suit. The photographer is here to take a family portrait."

"Why do I need to wear the suit?"

Henry wrapped an arm around Lily's shoulders, smiling blissfully.

"Ryan, you'll wear the groomsman's suit, and I'll wear the groom's. That's the only way everyone will know you're genuinely happy for me."

Dizziness hit me again. I grabbed the shoe cabinet to keep from collapsing.

Even the relatives who had once doted on him now avoided him, afraid of being associated with him. When he returned to the hotel where the wedding had been held, the lobby had long since been renovated. No one remembered the absurd wedding from over a decade ago.A receptionist stopped him at the entrance."Sir, you can't go in without a reservation.""I'm the groom," he said as he pointed toward the empty ballroom. "Lily is still waiting for me."When security approached, Henry suddenly caught sight of his reflection in a mirrored wall. He rus

My funeral was arranged by Noah. He buried me beside Grandma. No one ever got the family house. The court ruled that the transfer agreement had been signed under coercion, and the house remained part of my estate. According to the will I drafted after my diagnosis, the property was sold, and every dollar was donated to a charitable fund for patients struggling with serious illnesses. After serving their sentences, the five people involved never returned to the lives they once had.Mom and Dad sold their home to pay for my funeral expenses and the court-ordered compensation. After reading the trial records, even our relatives cut ties with them.Every year, on the anniversary of my death, they would spend hours sitting beside my grave."Ryan, I brought your favorite strawberry cake." Mom knelt before the headstone, holding the flavor I had loved most as a child. "Please, open your eyes and look at me."No one answered.Even after the rain turned the cake into a soggy mess, she

After the footage finished playing, Mom covered her face and broke down crying."I only stepped away to talk for a few minutes. I never thought Henry would wander off on his own."Back then, to avoid being blamed, Mom had concealed from everyone the fact that she had left for 47 minutes. The mall's surveillance system had suffered a technical failure, and the footage couldn't be retrieved immediately. By the time the police managed to recover the data, Henry had already been found. After learning the truth, Dad chose not to correct the family's misunderstanding."Ryan already believes it was his fault. If we tell him Mom was the one who made a mistake, it'll tear this family apart."So, they decided to let me keep carrying the blame. When Henry learned the truth, he never corrected it either. Rather than resent Mom, he resented the brother who had continued living happily at home."Why did he get to sleep in his own bed every night while I was suffering in a shelter?"From th

Ten years ago, Henry had been found after only seven months. Police had confirmed his identity at a shelter in a neighboring city. The day my parents and Sarah went to pick him up, I was left behind at home.Later, Mom told me the child they had found wasn't Henry. She told me not to get my hopes up.The truth was that Henry didn't want to see me."He lost me. Why does he still get to be my brother? I want him to know what it feels like to wait for his family every day."He was only 13 years old at the time. A psychologist had recommended slowly rebuilding the relationship between us. Instead, my parents sent Henry to live with an aunt and continued telling everyone he was still missing."Henry will get upset when he sees Ryan. Let's keep them apart for a few years. They'll understand when they're older."A few years became ten. Sarah visited Henry in the neighboring city every month. Lily knew about it too. In fact, before she even pursued me seven years ago, she had alread

After the forensics team took my body away, the entire apartment was sealed off as a crime scene.Police officers opened the master bedroom. My medical file was found buried beneath a pile of wedding decorations—CT scans, pathology reports, medication records, and a physician-signed notice of my critical condition. Every single document was there.Through the glass of an interrogation room, Lily watched officers place the records into evidence bags."He really had stomach cancer?" Her voice shook so badly that her words were barely audible. The investigator didn't answer. Instead, he asked, "The deceased repeatedly stated that he was unwell. Why did you prevent him from seeking medical treatment?""I thought he was pretending.""He specifically said he only had three days left to live.""When he was younger, he always faked being sick whenever he wanted to avoid apologizing," Lily desperately tried to explain. "I just wanted him to stop that bad habit."In another interrogation

My spirit lingered beneath the ceiling. There was no more pain or resentment. The five people gathered around the bed looked strangely unfamiliar."Ryan?" Lily reached out and touched the tip of my nose again. "Stop scaring me."Sarah shoved her aside impatiently."He's faked passing out before to scare us. He must be doing it again."Her palm struck my face hard. My body slumped helplessly to one side.Mom's lips began to tremble. "Ryan… Ryan, I know you're upset. Open your eyes. We can talk about the house tomorrow."Henry edged closer to Lily and said, "Ryan, are you doing this on purpose to get back at me? It's my wedding day. Why do you have to make such a scene?"Sweat appeared on Lily's forehead. Her first response was to pull out her phone and start a timer."Give him five minutes. He won't be able to keep it up."Three minutes passed. I still wasn't breathing. At last, Dad reached toward my neck. The moment his fingers touched my skin, he jerked back as though shock
