Yale Sutton pushed open the door.

His gaze swept across the room and landed on me. He froze for a moment, then quickly looked away and turned to the girl beside him.

"Nora, have you decided what color you want?"

After his company's annual party last year, he'd mentioned her when he got home.

"We've got a new intern named Nora Quinn. She's really sharp."

After that, her name started coming up more and more often.

"Nora said..."

"Nora thinks..."

"Nora recommended..."

I hadn't thought much of it at the time.

So this was her.

Nora pulled out her phone and showed Yale a picture.

"What do you think of this misty blue? I saw it online and saved it right away."

Yale took her phone, glanced at the picture, then picked up a color swatch from the table to compare.

"Misty blue." He held the swatch beside her face. "It suits you."

I'd asked him the same thing when I was choosing my wedding dress.

He hadn't even looked.

"Anything's fine."

Claire Bennett slid a stack of renderings across the table.

Yale pulled out a chair and sat down, motioning for Nora to sit beside him. Then he opened the sample book and started going through it with her.

As he flipped through the pages, his eyes flicked briefly in my direction.

Nora pointed to one of the designs.

"This one's pretty good, but do you think it's a little too plain?"

Yale considered it seriously.

"I'll ask if they have any other styles."

He got up to speak with Claire, but Nora caught his arm.

"I was just throwing it out there. You don't have to go to all that trouble."

"Anything you say, even in passing, matters to me."

He lightly tapped the tip of her nose before walking toward the counter.

The phone on the table buzzed.

I glanced down.

A message from Yale had appeared on my screen.

[Wait until I get home. I'll explain.]

Beside me, Nora was already chatting excitedly with Claire.

"My fiancé is so involved with the wedding.

"He picked out the invitations and the bouquets himself. I don't have to worry about anything."

Her eyes shone as she spoke, her happiness impossible to hide.

I listened from the side as my heart sank little by little.

Yale came back from the counter with another sample book and handed it to Nora.

"I already asked about the table decor for you."

He opened it to a page he'd folded down at the corner.

"The textile company can make the tasseled table runners. I've already ordered a sample. We can look at it next month."

For the past few months, he'd kept telling me he was swamped with work.

Whenever I asked what he was busy with, he said there was a new project.

So this was the "project."

He'd been planning a dream wedding for another woman.

Nora flipped to the dessert-table section.

"Oh, right. I don't think I've picked the desserts yet."

"It's already done," Yale said. "Low-sugar macarons. You're worried about gaining weight, so I had them cut the sugar by thirty percent. I also gave them your dietary restrictions."

Nora smiled and nudged him playfully.

"How do you know me so well?"

She closed the book and finally noticed me sitting off to the side.

"You're here by yourself again? Your fiancé still hasn't come to help you?"

Yale's hand stopped on the color swatches.

"He's busy," I said.

Busy loving another woman.

I folded the renderings in half and slipped them into my bag.

Nora didn't notice Yale's hesitation. She pulled out her phone and held up a QR code.

"Let's add each other! We can compare wedding ideas later."

Her smile was bright and guileless.

Yale's fingers trembled slightly against the color swatches.

"Sure."

I took out my phone and calmly scanned the code.

A moment later, Nora sent me a high-resolution photo.

It showed a dark blue velvet gift box stamped with a gold cloud pattern.

"Look! My fiancé had these favor boxes custom-made. His taste is seriously amazing!"

I opened the picture and zoomed in on the gilded design.

"My fiancé even sketched the design himself. It's supposed to symbolize success and a bright future."

Last month, I'd brought up wedding favors with Yale too.

I'd found a handmade candy box I liked and sent him the link.

A year later, my career had gained even more momentum. I'd made vice president, and my salary had doubled. I'd also finally bought a place of my own in Southhaven. It wasn't big, just over eight hundred square feet, but every part of it was exactly the way I wanted. I chose the cream-colored curtains myself. The fabric couch sat against the wall, the kitchen was open, and the balcony was wide enough for four pots of flowers, all of them thriving. On moving day, I sat alone on the floor eating takeout while the lights of Southhaven stretched beyond the windows.I stepped onto the balcony after I was done eating. The evening breeze felt good, stirring the pothos leaves beside me. Down below, people were walking their dogs, couples passed hand in hand, and a few older neighbors sat talking on a bench beneath the streetlights. For some reason, I thought about that New Year's Eve years ago, when all we could afford was the one plate of home fries, and Yale gave me the only fried egg.The

The last time Yale saw Quincy was at an industry summit in Southhaven. He was halfway through a presentation when he spotted a familiar figure in the audience. She was a little thinner than before, her hair had grown longer, and she wore a simple white blouse as she looked down at her phone. His voice faltered for a moment, then he continued. As soon as the event ended, he hurried out and caught up with her in the hallway."Quincy."I turned around. When I saw him, my expression barely changed. I looked at him the way I might look at any old acquaintance."Nice presentation," I said. There was so much Yale wanted to say, but in the end, all he managed was, "How have you been?""I've been pretty well.""I heard you got promoted.""Yeah.""And you moved again."That made me look at him. "How did you know?""I've been keeping up with you."I didn't give him a response.Yale reached into his pocket and pulled out an envelope. It was old, its corners worn nearly white."I've kept this all t

Six months later, I got promoted. The company bumped my salary to about sixty thousand a year and put me in charge of a small team. I also moved out of my cramped studio and into a two-bedroom apartment in Southridge, with heat, a balcony, and sunlight that lasted from morning well into the afternoon. I kept two pots of pothos out there, and both were thriving. On moving day, one of my new coworkers helped carry boxes upstairs and asked, "Quincy, don't you ever get lonely living by yourself?"I told her I didn't. The best thing about living alone was that no one else's moods got to dictate mine.Life settled into a steady rhythm after that. I got up at seven, worked until ten most nights, and spent the occasional weekend running nearby or staying home with a book. There wasn't a single trace of Yale left on my phone anymore, and it felt like I was beginning life again with a clean slate.I thought it would stay that way until one afternoon, when I was downstairs at the coffee shop wa

By the time Yale got back to the hotel, it was already two in the morning. He sat on the edge of the bed with his face in his hands, motionless for a long time. His phone lit up with a message from Nora.[Yale, when are you coming back from your trip? The curtain rod is loose, and I can't reach it by myself.]He stared at the screen, remembering that Quincy had once sent him almost the same message. It was back when he'd just started the company. The curtain rod in their rental had come loose, and Quincy had climbed onto a chair to tighten the screws because she couldn't reach. She'd stretched up on her toes, lost her balance, and fallen hard on her knee. He'd been so upset that from then on, anything around the apartment that was too high for her to reach became his job.Now Nora couldn't reach her curtain rod either. The difference was that she had three housekeepers and could call him whenever she needed him.Quincy had no one.If something broke in her apartment, she would have to

By my third month in Southhaven, my new company landed a major contract with one of the top three tech firms in the industry. The deal was worth eight figures, and when our boss announced it at the meeting, the whole office erupted.Afterward, one of my coworkers clapped me on the shoulder. "Quincy, that was impressive. You've only been working that account for two months."I smiled.I'd learned how to handle clients and sell a proposal at Yale's company. Back then, a single pitch could go through more than a dozen revisions, with clients picking apart every detail until well past midnight. I'd sit alone at the computer working through their comments one by one while Yale fell asleep beside me.Sometimes he'd wake the next morning to find me still revising and say, rubbing his eyes, "You don't have to be so obsessive about it. Good enough is fine."Good enough.Apparently, that was how he'd treated our relationship too. As long as what he gave me was good enough, that was all that matt

Yale had his assistant comb through flight records and hotel check-ins. In the end, they found Quincy Sawyer's name in the employment records of a small company in Southhaven. His assistant hesitated before handing over the file."Mr. Sutton, Ms. Sawyer is working as an operations director at a startup now. She makes about eighteen hundred dollars a month."Eighteen hundred. When Quincy worked at their own company, she'd never drawn a salary. Every cent had gone straight back into the business.Yale stared at the number, his throat tightening."Where does she live?""Briarwood. It's an older apartment complex. Her place is around three hundred square feet, and the rent's three hundred a month."Three hundred. He thought of the bank card he'd forced into her hand, the one she'd snapped in half and returned. The transfers on the two houses on the west side had gone through. Both were in her name now, but she'd never set foot in either one.Yale caught the last flight to Southhaven that n
