Chapter 2

Author: E. L. Knox
I feigned complete ignorance. "Will Aleron be returning to the elven forest, Emma? The Interracial Alliance Council hasn't issued a recall order, though."

Her sense of superiority swelled at the sight of my confused expression. "What would you know? The Royal Academy of Magic is about to open up a new round of student admissions.

"Once Aleron passes the exam, he'll be able to get a teaching position in Empiria and move into the Mages' Tower. He'll even be able to apply for a magic airship!"

"I see. How enviable."

I gazed at Emma's closed room door and laughed to myself. Would Aleron really be able to pass the exam this time?

On the day of my wedding, the great hall was filled with the gifts. The gifts hadn't been prepared by my family, of course. The dragon clan's leader, Igor Redburn, had delivered these gifts ahead of time to be displayed as dowry to the guests.

20 tables had been set up for the banquet. The banquet spread wasn't just limited to ordinary fruit wine and pastries either. Unicorn cheese and fae wine had also been prepared.

My parents handed out gem-encrusted souvenirs to each guest, and Father positively glowed at the nobles' compliments.

After being escorted into the dragon clan's territory by the wedding entourage, I finally met with a stern-faced Matias.

He looked nothing like Aleron. While Aleron was slender and elegant, Matias was tall and burly. Matias had bronzed skin over muscles that looked as hard as rock. I'd personally seen him tear apart a monster that attacked him with his bare hands.

I was a little scared and completed the blood oath ceremony stiffly.

"Kiss the bride!"

"You're so lucky, Your Highness! Your bride is as beautiful as the Moon Goddess!"

The heckling made my cheeks grow warm, but the great hall quickly fell silent.

Matias' icy gaze swept over the crowd, and nobody dared to continue making a ruckus.

He then stared intently at me. "I'm going to leave Northia and venture into the giants' territory to establish a trade route. Are you willing to go with me?"

Matias had never thought about getting married at this time. Ever since he met with the giant clan's merchants, he'd been eager to open up new trade routes. However, his clan was strongly opposed to his plan.

"Are you insane? That goes against all traditions!"

"If you dare take a single step outside Northia, the dragon clan will no longer recognize you as heir!"

The new concept of trade had yet to spread to these more conservative dragons. As such, the dragons still believed that they were right to protect their rights to the ore veins, and that any change meant a betrayal of their ancestors.

As the dragon clan's only heir, Matias had always been beloved by his clansmen. He hadn't expected to be placed under house arrest in the palace. Igor hurriedly arranged this wedding with the intention of tying Matias down with familial responsibilities.

I knew that so long as I turned him down, he would leave by himself tomorrow.

"I won't go," I said.

I still turned him down anyway. Wouldn't it be nice to enjoy some princess treatment in Northia?

When Matias heard me answer without hesitation, he pursed his lips and turned to leave.

I thought things over for a moment, then spoke up again. "Please wait."

He stopped but didn't look back.

I couldn't help but tug at a corner of his cloak, upon which he finally turned around.

In a society where family tradition was highly valued, those who failed to take care of their parents would be looked down upon by everyone. If Emma and my parents really brought the issue to the attention of the Empirian Academic Council, my reputation would be completely ruined.Gareth valued aristocratic dignity above all else, so I gave him two choices—he could either live quietly in my villa and distance himself from the aristocratic social circle, or accept 10,000 gold dragon coins and return to Rothschild Manor to rebuild the Rothschilds' ancestral home.My parents chose the latter option without hesitation. After all, how could living in seclusion here possibly compare to returning to the manor to flaunt their wealth?Emma's plan had fallen through, so she had no choice but to hope that Aleron would earn more money. That way, she would be able to live a pampered life, riding in a magic airship and living in a luxurious castle all day. After graduating, Aleron found a decent

When we saw the results, the members of the Scholars' Guild started congratulating me."You really made it into the Royal Academy of Magic, Ms. Lilian!""Congratulations!"I had been successfully accepted into the Royal Academy of Magic.Matias lifted me into the air. "My wife is a genius! You're the first mage in our family!"Cedric was also admitted into the Royal Magic Research Institute in this life, and the other scholars all made it into their desired academies as well. Aleron, who had scored a full 20 points beneath the passing score, was the only exception. He sat slumped beneath the bulletin board, looking distraught. Emma was clutching his robe hysterically."It shouldn't have turned out like this! You clearly passed the exam and were admitted into the Royal Academy of Magic! There must have been foul play! Someone took your place instead!"Let's ask for an audience with the council and the academy! They must have made some sort of mistake!" she shouted. All the cand

Emma's face reddened with anger and embarrassment, but she didn't dare toss the bracelet to the floor. "Honestly, who cares about your ratty bracelet?"After Matias retrieved the bracelet and put it back on for me, he leaned over to check on my condition. When I took in his travel-worn appearance, my lip trembled, and my tears started falling again. He gently wiped my tears away with his warm fingertip. "Although you look beautiful even when you're crying, don't cry anymore or your eyes will become swollen."Gareth and Faith immediately plastered on flattering smiles. "You're back, Matias. Why didn't you notify us in advance so we could prepare a sumptuous banquet for you?"Matias turned slightly in their direction and snorted coldly. "I wouldn't dare impose! Since you don't acknowledge Lilian as your daughter, then naturally, I'm not your son-in-law either."With that, he took my hand and led me away.Gareth and Faith followed us all the way to the porch, upon which Gareth stam

I had just finished setting down the elven cookies I'd brought with me when I heard Father snort coldly. "Get on your knees, you ungrateful brat."I stood stubbornly in the doorway instead of complying obediently, like I would have before. "What did I do wrong?""You've brought shame to our family! You've been showing up at the Scholars' Guild constantly because your husband's not around. When Emma kindly visited the guild to give you advice, you ended up sowing discord between her and her husband. Every noble family around is laughing at our family now."You've married into the dragon clan and are enjoying a life of luxury. What else are you dissatisfied with? How dare you seduce Aleron?"He tossed the crystal goblet in his hand at me, which shattered on impact. The fragments sliced into my calves, causing burning pain.I sneered. "You were the one who was reluctant to relinquish the dragon clan's betrothal gifts and made me take Emma's place, Father. How is it that I'm the one b

When I worked at the warehouse, people who came to collect magic materials would size me up with odd looks in their eyes. Several ladies who were friends with Emma would deliberately talk in loud voices in front of me."A certain someone assumed they could climb to the top of the social ladder by gaining favor with the dragon clan. Who would've thought His Royal Highness Matias would simply turn his nose up at an ugly duckling like her?" someone asked with a scornful laugh. The speaker was Serena Montrose, who had previously madly pursued Matias' affections. She'd once given him an entire set of dragon-scale armor, only for him to ask his guards who'd given him such trash. Serena had ended up crying for an entire month."She couldn't even get her husband to stick around. She's an utter disgrace to us nobles. Considering how she's still dolling herself up like that, I'm afraid she's probably trying to seduce some other man," commented Lyra Goldsong, the wife of Count Howard Stormcres

I explained to Matias, "I support your trade plan, but I want to remain here to prepare for the Royal Academy of Magic's exam. That's why I can't accompany you for the time being. Once I'm admitted into the academy, I'll definitely meet up with you."Although he'd never returned to Northia in my previous life, I'd seen evidence of his impressive feats in Empiria. Not only had he owned an exclusive fleet of magic airships, but he even controlled half of Allesia's ore trade. Even emperors treated him with extra courtesy, and people called him the "King of Trade".Matias was obviously stunned at my answer, and an odd emotion flashed through his dark eyes.He sat back down next to me. We were so close that I could smell the faint scent of gunpowder smoke and gold clinging to him."Okay. I'll prepare your school fees for you," he said in a low voice, his tone now gentle instead of cold. The magic lamp in our shared bedroom remained lit throughout the night, and Matias didn't leave the
