Chapter 3

Author: Forty-Nine
Tyler stepped in front of the two of us, blocking our way.

"Come on, Preston, look at you. Trying to sneak off to Nico's place and leave the rest of us behind? That's not how good friends treat each other."

Preston shot him a venomous glare. "I can manage not being selfish as a good friend. Can you manage not being shameless as a person?"

His words set off one of Tyler's flunkies.

"Preston, if you've got that much free time, go collect a few more bottles to scrape together some cash for your blind old mother instead of acting like a saint here!"

Preston and I were both on need-based scholarships. I'd been to his house before. His mother had an eye condition, and once it got dark, she couldn't see a thing.

The first time I visited, Marie Anders had carefully brought out the honey ham she only allowed herself at Christmas, just to treat me well. She'd been wonderful to me.

Hearing someone insult Marie made me furious, and I snapped back.

"Say one more word about Marie, and I'm not taking you to my house!"

Tyler's flunky burst out laughing so hard his whole body shook.

"Wow, you're really addicted to this act, huh? If it weren't for Tyler's sake, I'd have called you out ages ago instead of letting you keep this up for three years."

The moment he heard me start to give in, Tyler switched right back to his other face.

"Oh, come on, Nico, everyone's just messing around. We're only worried you'll take Preston and leave the rest of us behind! We're all classmates. We've known each other for three years; you can't play favorites like that!"

Preston opened his mouth to say more, but Tyler cut him off before he could.

"Listen here, Preston. If you keep getting in the way, I'll tell my father you scammed your scholarship, and then your blind mother can pay back every cent from the last three years!"

Preston clenched his fists, his eyes going red with anger. Watching him get bullied like this didn't sit well with me either. They just wanted to visit my house, that was all. There was no talking sense into people who were determined to get themselves killed.

"Fine. Go home and say your proper goodbyes to your families. I'll take you to my house in a week."

Someone in the crowd let out a cold laugh. "Say goodbye to our families? Do you live in the Hall of the King of Hell or something?"

Since someone clearly wanted to die that badly, I stopped pretending altogether.

"That's right. My family really does live in the Hall of the King of Hell. I'm the son of the King of Hell, Prince Nico of the underworld. Nico Wavell is just the name I go by among the living."

Tyler and everyone around him exchanged looks. After a few seconds of silence, they all burst out laughing so hard they doubled over. As far as they were concerned, I'd clearly lost my mind.

I cleared my throat. "Since you all want to come, then, welcome."

Tyler laughed so hard tears came out, and he still couldn't resist teasing me. "We're not paying our own way there, are we? Your Highness is surely going to send servants to pick us up!"

"And since we're going to a palace, that means Nico's gonna cover everything, right? We don't even need to bring cash?"

Human currency wasn't accepted in the underworld.

"Don't bother bringing money. It won't do you any good there."

Tyler said mockingly, "Hear that, guys? His Highness, Prince Nico, doesn't think our money is worth his time! Fine, let's all listen to him and not bring a single cent!"

Preston, shaking with anger, pointed at them.

"Going to someone's house without even bringing a gift is one thing, but not bringing any money either? You act like other people's money just falls from the sky!"

Damn, since when was Preston this sharp? How did he know that in my family, the money really did come blowing in on the wind?

Tyler's eyes turned sharp and vicious. "Preston, Nico already said it himself. Why are you sticking your nose into business that isn't yours?"

The underworld wasn't a place for tears, not while there were still sins waiting to be punished.By the time the ghost officers dragged Tyler out, he'd gone completely bald, without a single patch of intact skin left on his body, and his face had been torn to shreds. It was so gruesome that even I found it hard to look at.Of the group that had come with Tyler, the guilty ones stayed behind, while the innocent ones went to drink Agnes's broth and return to the mortal world.Once everything was settled, the Black Guard came to fetch me for a meeting with my father. I knew he wanted to ask how my trial among the living had gone."Was the mortal world beautiful?"I thought about it. "It really was.""Beautiful how?"Looking back on those eighteen years, I'd witnessed partings and deaths, grown used to the suffering of ordinary life, and also come to know what it meant to meet someone and fall in love. If I had to name the most beautiful thing of all, I supposed it was human conne

The others hadn't been as vicious as Tyler, sure, but did that make helping him along any less wrong? They'd stood by, cold and indifferent, while Tyler bullied his victims, and afterward, when the grieving parents came looking for answers, not one of them had told the truth. Just because Tyler's father was Principal Knight, did that mean he got to do whatever he wanted? Bully people without consequence? Cross every legal line he pleased?I called back everyone Tyler had gotten killed. If Tyler thought he'd been wronged, what about them? The mother he'd killed walked up to him, cradling her dead infant in her arms. Blood trickled from every opening on her face as she demanded to know why he'd pushed her down the stairs. All she'd done was stop him from messing around with the elevator buttons.Tyler, terrified out of his mind, shook his head over and over in denial, muttering apology after apology. But the woman's nails were already digging deep into his skin.Another victim, a b

Tyler was first up. When I brought him in, he still thought I was just messing with him. It wasn't until the Judge of the Underworld began listing his crimes, one by one, that he realized something was seriously wrong."Age five: deliberately drowned the neighbor's dog.""Age seven: pushed a mother carrying her baby down a flight of stairs, killing them both instantly.""Age ten: spread lies that drove an innocent bystander to their death.""Age fifteen: bullied a classmate until they jumped to their death.""Age seventeen: deliberately swapped someone's eye drops for glue, blinding them for life."Crime after crime was read out, one after another. Tyler tried to protest, insisting he'd never done any of it, that I was slandering him.Thinking he'd simply forgotten, the Judge pulled out a mirror to help refresh his memory. Tyler's childhood self soon appeared within the glass, reflecting back every awful thing he'd ever done. A few flickering moments even showed him spreading ru

Tyler snapped, "This is all special effects! It's makeup! He hired cosplayers for this!"Even with death staring him in the face, he was still putting on an act. I didn't bother arguing with him anymore.Once we arrived, I got off the bus and greeted a few familiar faces. Spotting the Black and White Guards among them, I asked after my father."His Majesty is occupied with something at the moment. Please allow me to escort Your Highness to dinner first."Seeing me get off the bus, the others didn't dare say another word and hurried to follow behind me. The whole way there, every ghost officer we passed stared at them with looks of pure terror. Fair enough. None of them had ever seen anything on this scale before. We made our way to the banquet hall. Looking around, I realized it hadn't changed a bit since I'd left eighteen years ago. Tables carved from skulls, benches built from bone frames, a rug made from the pelt of some creature I couldn't identify, and the same blue ghost-fir

"The forecast said it'd be sunny today. What's going on?""Wait... is he actually the King of Hell's son?"Sensing something was wrong, Tyler cleared his throat."Don't be scared, everyone. He's obviously just putting on a show. There's too many of us for him to try anything.""Right! Nothing to be scared of!"The soul ferry was the vehicle that ran between the mortal world and the underworld, though it looked no different from an ordinary city bus. It pulled up in front of me, and Arthur Crowe waved me over."Prince Nico, the King of Hell heard you were coming home and sent me to pick you and your classmates up personally."I'd specifically asked my father to have Arthur dress in something less terrifying for the occasion.Standing nearby, Tyler overheard the exchange and gave a cold laugh."You even hired someone to play along with your act? Pretty convincing, I'll give you that."With that, he climbed onto the bus and asked Arthur how much he was getting paid to play the p

Worried that Preston and Tyler might clash again, I tried to reassure him."Don't worry about it, Preston. My family has so much money lying around that not even a ghost bothers picking it up!"The moment I said it, everyone burst out laughing. None of them caught that I meant actual ghosts.Preston was worked up. "They're doing this on purpose! They want to watch you humiliate yourself, and they won't hold back once they get to your house!"Tyler asked when we could leave. The Black and White Guards, the underworld's top-performing escorts, only ever brought back one or two souls at a time on their best days. Bringing this many people at once meant I'd have to call my father and check if it was even allowed.Right, I should also remind him to have Agnes make some extra soup."I need to call my father first. I'll let you all know in the class group chat."That night, I used a séance to tell my father what was going on. He refused immediately."Absolutely not! You can't just do
