Chapter 2

Author: Forty-Nine
Everyone else immediately caught on.

"Exactly, Your Highness, Prince Nico. Your house rivals Versailles. Forget just our class, the whole school could probably fit inside, right?"

"Your place is so massive, I wonder if we could even finish touring the whole thing in our three-month break."

"And when we get there, I won't even ask for much. Just ten servants each to wait on us shouldn't be too much trouble, right?"

Everyone watching burst out laughing, sizing me up like they were watching a show.

I shook my head. "You can't come. My house only lets people in. It never lets them out."

My father always said the Three Realms each had their own rules. Gods could only stay in the Heavens, the living could only stay in the mortal world, and ghosts could only stay in the underworld.

I was the one exception, the one he'd secretly pulled strings to send out.

Humans weren't like us ghosts. Once they set foot in the underworld, there was no coming back.

Getting a little anxious, I said, "You really can't come to my house."

That only made the whole crowd roar with laughter.

"What, afraid we'll expose your lie and find out you're not really a prince?"

"Three years of playing a rich heir, and even after graduation you still won't come clean. Shameless."

"Now, now, don't be so harsh. Maybe His Highness just thinks we're too common to be worthy of visiting his house!"

Seeing that everyone's mood had soured a little, Tyler put on a fake, sympathetic face and clapped me on the shoulder.

"Nico, don't listen to them talk nonsense. They're just jealous of you! I believe you really are a prince. I'm trying to help you here. Take us to your house, show them your palace, and really put them in their place! I'll even go live and stream the whole thing to prove who you are. The monarchy's not dead after all!"

In three years, Tyler had never said this much to me at once. He must really want to help me, I thought, to go to such lengths to prove it. Which was exactly why I couldn't possibly take him.

"No can do, Tyler. If you come to my house, you'll never be able to leave."

A flash of impatience crossed Tyler's eyes, but his tone stayed playful all the same.

"Nico, it's a palace we're talking about. Forget never leaving in this lifetime. I'd be thrilled to stay there for the next eight hundred lifetimes! Right, boys?"

He turned and shot the rest of the guys in the class a look. Everyone caught on immediately and chimed in.

"Yeah, Nico, I'd gladly stay at your place forever and never come back!"

"Come on, just say yes already!"

Right then, Preston Anders, the person I was closest to and the only one who actually knew who I really was, walked in.

Tyler arched an eyebrow, his tone dripping with mockery. "We're planning a trip to Nico's place over break. What business is that of yours?"

Preston glanced around at everyone, then his eyes landed on me. He grabbed my arm and tried to pull me toward the door, but the crowd blocked his path.

"You're going to Nico's house? You have no idea that he..."

Preston caught himself before he said anything more. I'd told him once that he could never reveal who I really was, or it would throw the Three Realms into chaos.

Preston was the smartest, kindest person I'd met in three years. He never asked where I lived or who I really was. He wouldn't even let me pay when we bought things together, and he was always inviting me over to his place. If it weren't for the rules of the Three Realms, I'd have loved to invite him over too.

Preston was usually even-tempered, but this was the first time I'd seen his face flush with anger at someone.

I patted him on the shoulder.

"Preston, what's wrong?"

Preston turned to look at me. "It's nothing, Nico. Let's just ignore them and go."

The underworld wasn't a place for tears, not while there were still sins waiting to be punished.By the time the ghost officers dragged Tyler out, he'd gone completely bald, without a single patch of intact skin left on his body, and his face had been torn to shreds. It was so gruesome that even I found it hard to look at.Of the group that had come with Tyler, the guilty ones stayed behind, while the innocent ones went to drink Agnes's broth and return to the mortal world.Once everything was settled, the Black Guard came to fetch me for a meeting with my father. I knew he wanted to ask how my trial among the living had gone."Was the mortal world beautiful?"I thought about it. "It really was.""Beautiful how?"Looking back on those eighteen years, I'd witnessed partings and deaths, grown used to the suffering of ordinary life, and also come to know what it meant to meet someone and fall in love. If I had to name the most beautiful thing of all, I supposed it was human conne

The others hadn't been as vicious as Tyler, sure, but did that make helping him along any less wrong? They'd stood by, cold and indifferent, while Tyler bullied his victims, and afterward, when the grieving parents came looking for answers, not one of them had told the truth. Just because Tyler's father was Principal Knight, did that mean he got to do whatever he wanted? Bully people without consequence? Cross every legal line he pleased?I called back everyone Tyler had gotten killed. If Tyler thought he'd been wronged, what about them? The mother he'd killed walked up to him, cradling her dead infant in her arms. Blood trickled from every opening on her face as she demanded to know why he'd pushed her down the stairs. All she'd done was stop him from messing around with the elevator buttons.Tyler, terrified out of his mind, shook his head over and over in denial, muttering apology after apology. But the woman's nails were already digging deep into his skin.Another victim, a b

Tyler was first up. When I brought him in, he still thought I was just messing with him. It wasn't until the Judge of the Underworld began listing his crimes, one by one, that he realized something was seriously wrong."Age five: deliberately drowned the neighbor's dog.""Age seven: pushed a mother carrying her baby down a flight of stairs, killing them both instantly.""Age ten: spread lies that drove an innocent bystander to their death.""Age fifteen: bullied a classmate until they jumped to their death.""Age seventeen: deliberately swapped someone's eye drops for glue, blinding them for life."Crime after crime was read out, one after another. Tyler tried to protest, insisting he'd never done any of it, that I was slandering him.Thinking he'd simply forgotten, the Judge pulled out a mirror to help refresh his memory. Tyler's childhood self soon appeared within the glass, reflecting back every awful thing he'd ever done. A few flickering moments even showed him spreading ru

Tyler snapped, "This is all special effects! It's makeup! He hired cosplayers for this!"Even with death staring him in the face, he was still putting on an act. I didn't bother arguing with him anymore.Once we arrived, I got off the bus and greeted a few familiar faces. Spotting the Black and White Guards among them, I asked after my father."His Majesty is occupied with something at the moment. Please allow me to escort Your Highness to dinner first."Seeing me get off the bus, the others didn't dare say another word and hurried to follow behind me. The whole way there, every ghost officer we passed stared at them with looks of pure terror. Fair enough. None of them had ever seen anything on this scale before. We made our way to the banquet hall. Looking around, I realized it hadn't changed a bit since I'd left eighteen years ago. Tables carved from skulls, benches built from bone frames, a rug made from the pelt of some creature I couldn't identify, and the same blue ghost-fir

"The forecast said it'd be sunny today. What's going on?""Wait... is he actually the King of Hell's son?"Sensing something was wrong, Tyler cleared his throat."Don't be scared, everyone. He's obviously just putting on a show. There's too many of us for him to try anything.""Right! Nothing to be scared of!"The soul ferry was the vehicle that ran between the mortal world and the underworld, though it looked no different from an ordinary city bus. It pulled up in front of me, and Arthur Crowe waved me over."Prince Nico, the King of Hell heard you were coming home and sent me to pick you and your classmates up personally."I'd specifically asked my father to have Arthur dress in something less terrifying for the occasion.Standing nearby, Tyler overheard the exchange and gave a cold laugh."You even hired someone to play along with your act? Pretty convincing, I'll give you that."With that, he climbed onto the bus and asked Arthur how much he was getting paid to play the p

Worried that Preston and Tyler might clash again, I tried to reassure him."Don't worry about it, Preston. My family has so much money lying around that not even a ghost bothers picking it up!"The moment I said it, everyone burst out laughing. None of them caught that I meant actual ghosts.Preston was worked up. "They're doing this on purpose! They want to watch you humiliate yourself, and they won't hold back once they get to your house!"Tyler asked when we could leave. The Black and White Guards, the underworld's top-performing escorts, only ever brought back one or two souls at a time on their best days. Bringing this many people at once meant I'd have to call my father and check if it was even allowed.Right, I should also remind him to have Agnes make some extra soup."I need to call my father first. I'll let you all know in the class group chat."That night, I used a séance to tell my father what was going on. He refused immediately."Absolutely not! You can't just do
