Chapter 1

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Her lips are moving — her eyes are locked on something! She's trying to summon her wolf to attack us!"

The instant I connected with my father, Rain's best friend screamed.

They grabbed me like a rag doll, pinning me down to stop any supposed attack.

My Beta fiancé, Liam, walked over, his expression cold and disappointed.

But I couldn't focus on any of it. The wolfsbane burned so badly my vision was going black. I clutched my chest and sank to my knees in front of him.

"I wasn't doing anything! Liam, I was exposed to wolfsbane when I was little — it's coming back. Please, take me to the healers!"

Liam finally noticed my pain. He reached down to pick me up, but Rain pulled him away.

"Liam, your fiancée is so inconsiderate. Everyone in the pack came to celebrate me becoming a healer, and she's trying to ruin it out of jealousy."

Rain pouted, her voice trembling with false hurt. "I know Vera has never liked me. I only invited her because I wanted to fix things between us. I never expected her to be this ungrateful. I should've just invited you."

Her words turned the crowd against me. The sneers and accusations came from every direction.

"Vera, you're a real piece of work. Maybe next time, keep the drama on the stage where it belongs."

"You're only targeting Rain because she's kind — framing her for poisoning you!"

Breathing got harder.

I could hear my own ragged gasps. It felt like something was crushing my chest, squeezing out the last pocket of air.

I knew the pack had never accepted me. To them, I was an outsider — unworthy of being the fiancée of their strongest Beta.

Rain was the one they wanted for him.

When Liam insisted I was his fated mate, their resentment peaked.

Rain used the opportunity to wedge herself between us.

I'd told him so many times, but he never took it seriously.

"Rain's like a sister to me. Don't overthink it."

When Liam and I were on a date, Rain would show up uninvited, inserting herself into our daily lives, and openly criticizing how we lived.

Whenever I showed the slightest frustration, Rain would mock me for being petty and jealous. And Liam grew more impatient with me because of it.

The pain dragged me back to the present.

Rain stared at my agonized face, one eyebrow raised, triumph written all over her face.

"I see what's happening, Vera. You're used to being the center of attention on stage. Today the spotlight is on me, and you can't stand it — so you fake a wolfsbane attack for sympathy."

The werewolves at the party scoffed. They laughed at my suffering. Someone even pulled out a phone to record me.

Liam's cold expression hardened further.

"Vera, I know you don't like Rain. I've already kept my distance from her to spare your feelings. Her celebration is one day. Can't you just endure a few hours? For me?"

The pain in my chest became unbearable.

I couldn't even answer him. I bit through my lip, using the sting and the taste of blood to stay conscious.

I started crawling toward the cave entrance.

Maybe someone outside would help me.

Rain's cruel laughter echoed behind me.

"What's wrong? Got caught in your little act, and now that Liam's done protecting you, you're running?"

The cave erupted with laughter.

Liam's expression darkened further.

Just as I reached the entrance, Rain grabbed my hair and yanked me back.

My weakened body slammed into the soup cauldron. It toppled over, drenching me in the thick, scalding liquid.

Rain pinched her nose in disgust, savoring the moment.

"Vera, you always have to play the victim. Look at you — pathetic and pitiful. You're an embarrassment to our Beta!"

Liam glared at me. "Vera, enough! Stop with the act and get up!"

Then he froze.

My face was deathly pale. The soup and sweat soaked through my clothes. The scalding liquid had raised blisters across my skin.

And I was too weak to make a sound.

"How is she this weak? A little hot soup shouldn't be able to burn a werewolf... unless she really was poisoned?"

Liam stared at me, frozen in shock.

I returned to the stage. This time, I wasn't the outsider hiding her identity, performing in some shabby pack theater for her own amusement.I was Vera, heir to the Granite Pack, performing in the finest theaters in the North. My first major production caused a sensation. The invitations poured in — tours, new scripts, collaborations with renowned companies.I was busy. I was fulfilled. After a successful opening night, I was in my private dressing room backstage, removing my makeup. My assistant came in and said two gentlemen were waiting outside, both hoping to take me to dinner. One was the acclaimed actor I'd just performed with; the other was a major patron — the heir to some prominent family. She looked at me uncertainly.I gazed into the mirror, carefully wiping away the last traces of stage makeup, revealing a clean, fresh face."Tell them I appreciate the flowers and the kind words tonight. But I already have plans for the after-party — with my father and the troupe.""As for

A gaunt, twisted figure lunged out. Rain. Her face was a web of hideous scars. The worst was her mouth — her once-beautiful fangs had been nearly all ripped out, leaving only a few blackened, broken stubs jutting from ruined gums."I've been waiting for you, you bitch! Let's go to hell together!"She charged at me, shrieking, a silver dagger raised high — its blade coated in wolfsbane — aimed straight at my throat.I had no time to dodge.A blur of motion — faster than Rain — slammed into her from the side.Rain's broken fangs missed me. Instead, the wolfsbane-coated dagger slashed across the neck of the man who'd thrown himself between us.Liam.He let out a muffled grunt, his body convulsing violently, but he used every ounce of remaining strength to pin the thrashing, snarling Rain against the rocks."You want to die?!" My father and his warriors rushed in.CRACK.Rain didn't even get to scream. The wolves tore her apart in an instant — nothing left but a smear of blood and flesh.I

Under the healers' care, I recovered quickly. The wound on my arm healed with a special herbal salve, leaving only a faint scar.Being back in the pack I'd left three years ago hit me harder than I expected. My father had always been overprotective because of the wolfsbane. When I told him my dream was to become an actress, he'd been firmly against it — terrified my body couldn't handle the strain. But one night, the sheltered daughter he'd spent years protecting packed a small bag and slipped away. After meeting Liam, I'd hidden my identity even more deliberately, afraid my father would drag me back.It wasn't until the day before Rain's celebration that I overheard her bragging to Liam about how some powerful benefactor had been secretly propping up the Crescent Pack for years. That's when it hit me. My father had known where I was all along. He'd just been quietly paving the way for the life I'd chosen. After bringing me home, my father mobilized the entire pack's resources to locat

"What — what did you just say?" Liam surged forward, but the warriors held him back.Through the wall of bodies, his red-rimmed eyes found mine."Vera, I'm sorry! I didn't know you'd been poisoned. I didn't know who you were. Rain fooled me — that's the only reason I didn't believe she'd put wolfsbane in the soup. If I'd known the truth, I never would have — ""Never would have what?" I cut him off. "Never would have let them force a second bowl of poison down my throat? Never would have watched me crawl toward the exit and done nothing? Never would have walked away while I bled on the floor?"Every sentence landed like a slap. The color drained from his face."Alpha Hale." He turned to my father, his voice barely a rasp. "Please forgive my stupidity. I'll do anything to make it up to Vera. Please — give me the chance."My father's gaze held nothing but contempt."Three years ago, you saved my daughter once. In return, I intervened in secret — raised your pack's reputation, gave you th

The words struck every wolf in the cave like a thunderclap.Rain's sobbing caught in her throat. She gaped, her lips trembling. "No — impossible. She's just a worthless Omega.""Omega?" My father glanced at her the way someone might look at an insect. "My daughter was born heir to the Granite Pack."Liam stared at me, shock and regret and fear churning behind his eyes."Vera, you never told me — ""Told you what?" I leaned against my father, my voice weak but clear. "That my father is the most powerful Alpha in the North? That I'm heir to the Granite Pack? That the only reason your pack still exists is because my father protected it from the shadows?"I looked at every wolf who had mocked me, sneered at me, spat on me.They all had their heads down now, too terrified to meet my eyes, their bodies shaking. My father swept his gaze across every face. "You dared to do this to my daughter. You will pay."One of his warriors stepped forward, holding a deep-violet crystal that pulsed with a

The boulder sealing the cave entrance exploded inward. My father stormed in with his strongest warriors behind him.The wolves holding me released their grip instantly, stumbling backward in terror. My father's eyes found me — drenched in soup, blood running down my arm, skin white as death. A low snarl ripped from his throat."Who are you? How dare you break into our party!" Rain shrieked.CRACK.My father didn't lift a finger. His Alpha aura alone sent Rain flying into the cave wall. She hit the rock with a scream and crumpled to the ground, her right hand bent at a grotesque angle."My hand!" Rain wailed, clutching her arm. "I'm a healer! Without my hands, I can't channel my healing!"My father's gaze swept over the spilled soup. He inhaled once, and his expression turned lethal. He walked to where Rain lay."A healer — and you couldn't sense the wolfsbane still in her system? You fed her more poison on top of it?"He raised his foot over her remaining good hand. "You don't deserve
