LOGINEmma’s POV
I walked beside Zane toward his car, my nerves bouncing all over the place. I wished Maddie had just let me take a cab. Sitting alone with him in a car? Total torture.
Then his hand landed on my lower back.
My breath caught, and a chill ran straight down my spine.
“You alright, Emma?” he asked, his voice low.
I gave a quick nod without turning his way. My cheeks were burning, and I could feel the heat in my face. If he saw me now, he would know everything.
Then came that low laugh of his.
God, I needed this ride to be over.
Luckily, my place was close. Just a few minutes and I would be out of the car and away from… whatever this was turning into.
He walked me to the car and opened the door like a proper gentleman. I got in, slid across the seat, trying to stick close to the door like that would help. He joined me, started the engine, and the silence filled the space.
“You still staying at the same place?” he asked as we got on the road.
“Yeah,” I answered without looking at him.
He kept his eyes ahead while I stole a glance. That jawline, those lips, and those dark, unreadable eyes… He looked way too good. Way too much of everything. I caught myself staring and quickly turned away, licking my lips and muttering under my breath.
Then the car stopped. He pulled over.
My heart jumped. “Zane? Why are we stopping?”
He did not speak right away. He unbuckled his seatbelt and turned to face me, that crooked smirk forming.
“Time for some truth,” he said, calm and full of confidence.
I blinked. “Truth? About what?”
He leaned a little closer. “About how badly you want me.”
Wait, what?
“I… What are you talking about?” My voice shook just a bit.
He gave a small laugh and rested his hand on my knee. My body reacted in a flash.
“Emma, you have been holding it in for years,” he said, tilting his head. “But now? It shows.”
I needed to snap out of it. I used to be bold, at least with other people. Maybe it was time I stopped hiding. I took a breath.
“Zane, even if it is true, it doesn’t matter,” I said, trying to sound like I had control. “You do not feel the same. I am not your type. And, seriously, you are Maddie’s brother. Let’s just end this conversation.”
He looked at me for a beat. Then, with a quiet nod, he put his seatbelt back on and started driving again without another word.
Seriously? That was it? He started all this, dragged it out of me, and now… silence?
I bit down on my frustration and stared out the window. This ride needed to be over.
As soon as we got to my place, I unbuckled like my seatbelt was on fire.
“Thanks,” I muttered, stepping out before he could speak again. I just needed to breathe.
I climbed the stairs, opened the door, and stepped inside. But before I could close it, Zane pushed it open and came in like he lived there.
Of course. Perfect timing, Zane. What better way to calm my wild thoughts than to have you in the same room, next to my bed? He shut the door behind him.
“Who said I never saw you like that?” he said, casually, as if he hadn’t just thrown a grenade at me. I stopped walking.
“What?” I spun to face him. “You don’t. You’ve never looked at me that way. And come on, let’s be real. I’m not even close to your type. So, whatever this is? Just quit playing.”I put a hand on my hip, trying to sound confident even though my heart was pounding like crazy. But he was staring at me like he was starving.
He stepped closer, placed his hand on my waist, and leaned in. His breath brushed my ear.
“Maybe you just never noticed me watching.”
Another wave of goosebumps. What was that even supposed to mean? I had always been invisible to him, background noise. I took a step back. Then another. I needed space before I did something stupid.
“Zane, what is this? Are you bored? Is this your new hobby, messing with me for laughs?”
His grin grew. “Who said I’m joking?”
I narrowed my eyes. “Why else would you be saying this?”
He stepped even closer. “Maybe because I want you.”
My brain stopped. Move, Emma. Say something. But I just stood there, frozen, as he leaned in and brushed his lips over mine. I gasped. A soft, embarrassing sound slipped out. But instead of kissing me, he leaned back to my ear.
“See you around, sexy,” he growled, then turned and walked toward the door.
“Absolute jerk!” I yelled after him.
He only looked over his shoulder with that smug grin. “I know. You like it. See you soon.”
And just like that, he was gone. I stood there, mouth open, heart racing, body on fire. What just happened? Was he serious? Was he messing with me? And what the hell did “see you soon” mean?
I groaned, tossed my hands in the air, and stormed into my room. Ripped my clothes off, threw on my pyjamas, and dove into bed, but sleep was nowhere near.
Then my phone buzzed. An unknown number sent me a message.
“Don’t worry. We’ll finish what we started.”
I shot upright. Zane? How the hell did he get my number?
I quickly typed back:
“ Where did you get my number? And finish what?”The reply came fast:
“I asked your sister. Told her you left something in my car 😉 We’ll pick up where we stopped. You’ll finally get what you’ve been wanting. Night, x”I stared at the screen. Then replied:
“Glad you think so. Night.”
And that was it. I dropped the phone on my nightstand, flipped it to silent, and laid back. He probably won’t text again. Probably won’t say another word. I’ll see him at Maddie’s, and we’ll pretend this never happened. Because that is what he does, he plays with girls. And I’m just the next one he’ll ruin.
He moved with a powerful, self-assured walk that ate up the distance between us. His frame was solid and wide, and his riding gear seemed tailored to his body. His gloved hands looked enormous, and he carried a second helmet, a perfect match for the ridiculous bunny-eared one he wore. There was no question in my mind who was inside that suit.He stopped at the low wall, his gaze lifting to find me. He crooked a finger, beckoning me forward. For a stupid second, I glanced behind me, certain he must be signaling to someone else. A nudge from Julie pushed me into action. I stood up on unsteady legs, descended the two steps to the barrier, and looked down at him, my smile feeling fragile and nervous.A deep quiet fell over the entire place. The constant drone of the commentator cut out. Raymond boosted himself onto a part of the fence, bringing us eye to eye. He lifted the clear shield on his helmet, and those intense, sea-colored eyes fixed on me. The way the skin at their corners crease
BellaAfter Raymond got me into bed, he took my hands and began to treat the cuts. He was very gentle, cleaning my palms and then my feet, making sure not to press too hard. I let out a small sound as I rolled onto my side, and he was right there, leaning over to turn me back. A piece of glass was poking out from my thigh. He moved fast to get the medical kit and a pair of tweezers. He pulled the shard out, and it was not buried as deep as we had both feared. I was so glad I would not need a hospital visit. The only one nearby was where I used to work, and I absolutely could not go back there, not now. I was sure every single person there knew my business by now, and I could just imagine them all talking about me.“You need to watch yourself more,” he said as he finished with the bandage.“No fucking joke,” I replied. “So tell me, Mr. Big Shot, what did you mean when you said you ‘handled it’?”“I meant what I said. Now, you really should get some sleep.”As he pulled the blanket up,
Raymond’s PovThe second Mark called to tell me Bella had been suspended for seeing a patient, I got the CEO of the hospital on the phone. There was no way in hell she was losing her job over something so stupid. I run a construction company and own others. I have the same rule, but what people do after work is their own business. And it was not like we met for the first time at the hospital, or that anything started between us there. Well, maybe a little did, and if it was one of my employees, I might not be so understanding… but that did not mean I was okay with it either. Honestly, I felt like this was my fault, too.The call did not take long, and I soon had done what I needed to do. She still had not called me, and that bothered me. Julie was the one who told Mark that Ron had gone to the hospital to report Bella for breaking the rules, and I was burning with anger.Bella was afraid of what Ron would do now that she was not getting her way, but damn, I never thought she would go
Raymond’s PovThis woman was nothing but a problem. I watched the way Bella fought to keep her tears inside when Ron spoke those cruel words to her, and all I wanted was to stand up, take that woman by the arm, and throw her the fuck out of Bella’s house. She had no right to talk to her daughter like that. She should be proud that her child had made something good of herself.Instead, she put her down at every turn, and all for cash. The idea came to me. If she wanted money, I could give her so much she would never need to bother Bella again. But then I realized she was the type who would burn through a fortune in a weekend. She would always come back for more.More than that, I knew Bella did not want anything from her. But did she want her mother gone for good, or did she just want her mother to finally see her? To love her the way a mother is supposed to love her daughter. To be proud that her daughter had become a better person than she could ever be. Years of being hurt, in her m
Bella's PovJust when I started to believe my life was finally good, the one person who knew how to fuck up my day walked into my home like she fucking owned it. I had decided to go back to my place this morning, and Raymond came with me. We were lounging on the sofa, talking through our issue about keeping things from each other. He promised he never meant to hide anything, that he only wanted me to see the man he had become. After some cuddling, things got intense very quickly. The man was pure sin on two legs, and I could not resist him, no matter how I tried. Fucking modesty, all my shyness vanished the second he dropped to his knees in front of the sofa, slipped my jean shorts and underwear off, and put his mouth on me.He draped my legs over his shoulders, pulling my body to the very edge of the couch, and devoured me. I was not complaining. Not at all. I was enjoying every second of having this beautifully wicked man between my thighs. I tangled my hands in his hair, pulling hi
Raymond's PovI thought everything was perfect between us. So what the fuck just happened? One moment she was smiling, content, even watching me while I slept. Now, this. I am scrambling, trying to find a reason, something I did or said to cause this. Is she regretting last night? Is that why she fell apart?I cannot figure it out, but I know one thing for sure. If I was the one who hurt her, she would not let me close. She would not have allowed me to clean her up and put her back into my bed. She refused to eat, and then she was just gone, lost to sleep.I am sitting on the couch across the room, watching her. What is she hiding from me? Who hurt her so badly that it would make her break down like that, and why can she not tell me? The idea of someone causing her that much pain, that she carries this suffering inside, makes my chest feel heavy and hard. She seemed so completely shattered when I held her.Even in sleep, she finds no peace. I can see the struggle on her face. She is f
