Chapter 4

Author: Victoria Wilson
Sierra glanced at Josephine where she was standing to one side and saw the faint hickeys around her neck. She suppressed her anger and laughed. “Where else can I find you if not here?”

“You can head inside to work first,” Lewis turned to Josephine and said.

She nodded and walked past Sierra to enter the coffee shop.

She worked here because she had been rejected from many jobs before. Only this place was willing to take her in.

After Josephine left, Sierra walked up to Lewis and took his arm. “Are you still mad?” she said in a cutesy voice.

“Let’s talk in the car.”

Sierra clung to his arm affectionately, but he didn’t push her away.

Before getting into the car, she took out a disinfectant spray from her bag and sprayed it several times on the passenger seat. She then looked up and smiled. “I just want to sanitize it.”

Josephine was sitting there a while ago, and she found it dirty.

Lewis fixed his eyes on the woman and didn’t say anything, silently approving of her behavior even though he knew that Josephine was standing right behind them.

Through the windows, Josephine witnessed it all.

She saw how he pampered and cared for Sierra.

People who were favored had nothing to fear. As Lewis loved Sierra, no matter how unreasonable or absurd her behaviors were, they were reasonable and justifiable in his eyes.

Even if it meant humiliating his own wife in front of her.

Sierra only got into the car after she finished sanitizing the seat.

She tidied her curly hair and held Lewis’ hands. “Hey, why are you still sulking? I won’t bring up divorce again in the future.”

He usually spoiled her, but whenever she wanted him to divorce that mute woman, he would immediately get angry.

Although he always said that he didn’t love the mute woman and was just fulfilling his promise to his grandfather, Sierra would still be mad.

What she wanted was a one-and-only kind of love, not this kind of undisplayable affection.

Everyone kept saying that she was Lewis’ darling and that he gave her everything except marrying her.

Only Sierra knew it wasn’t true.

If Lewis really loved her that much, he wouldn’t let her endure all the hate. Why did the promise still matter? Alan had been dead for three years, so why would Lewis still care about that kind of thing?

If she were asked who he loved, she’d say that he loved no one but himself.

Lewis lit a cigarette and leaned back in his seat. He took a long drag and filled the car with smoke.

Then, he said, “Sierra, I’ve already told you that I’ll support you financially as long as you stay with me. If you don’t get married for the rest of your life, I’ll support you for the entire length of it. I keep my promises.”

Turning to look at Sierra, he went on, “This is my promise to you, but I also made the same promise to Grandpa.”

Before his grandfather passed away, he forced Lewis to swear that he would take care of Josephine for the rest of his life even if he didn’t love her, and Lewis swore to it.

He had only sworn to two people in his life. Once was to Alan, and the other time was to Sierra.

A promise! It was that goddamn promise again! Sierra wanted to throw a rampage every time she heard that word.

“Yeah, I know you can do it.” She suppressed the anger in her heart and continued sullenly, “But I was with you first.”

Lewis took a final drag of his cigarette and flicked the butt out of the car window. He then grasped Sierra’s hand and spoke in a more affectionate tone, "I'm sorry for what I did to you. Just tell me what you want and I'll make it up to you."

Sierra tilted her head in contemplation. “I don’t feel like driving that Ferrari anymore. I want a Maserati.”

Lewis smiled faintly. “We’ll change it.”

“Also, you’re not allowed to go look for that mute for a month.”

“Alright.”

It was then that Sierra flashed a satisfied smile. “Let’s go to work, then.”

Josephine watched the car drive away before turning around. The cloth in her hand was all crumpled up in her grip.

She put the cloth on the table and smoothed it out as if soothing her own tangled heart.

“Aren’t you angry about all that?”
