Chapter 5

Author: Bruce
The SUV didn't head toward the Northside estate. Instead, it veered down a remote forest road, heading toward the edge of Firwood territory.

The scenery outside grew wilder, thicker—dense black pines blocking out the sky.

When the vehicle finally stopped, Vanessa glanced out the window and shrieked:

"What the hell is this place? We're supposed to be at the estate! Why did you drag us out to this godforsaken wasteland?"

My father's face darkened. He slammed his palm against the seat.

"Logan! Do y

The next three days, I never left her bedside.I held Helena's cool hand and whispered to her softly—telling her about my life over the years, the sunlight and the rain that had fallen on my world.Until the fourth morning, when the first ray of dawn slipped through the curtains and touched the headboard.Helena's long lashes fluttered. Her eyes opened slowly. The moment those clear, autumn-deep eyes met mine, tears slid down her cheeks without warning."Eileen... my little sister..."She raised a weak hand to my face, her palm carrying that familiar warmth from my dream. The ward door burst open.Rex—the iron-fisted, untouchable Alpha—dropped to both knees the second he saw his wife awake. His shoulders shook violently as he buried his face in her pale hand, sobbing without shame."Helena... you're finally awake..."I slipped my hand free and tiptoed out, leaving that reunion to the two souls who'd nearly lost each other. In the hallway, Logan handed me a warm cup of black tea."Miss

  • What She Could Never Be   Chapter 7

The SUV rolled into the private healing estate at the heart of Firwood Pack territory.Guards stood like a forest of shadows outside the top-floor ICU.At the end of the long corridor stood a man—tall, broad-shouldered, his presence pressing down on the air like a storm front.Rex. Alpha of the Firwood Pack.Nothing like the cold-blooded killer of legend. Tonight, his heavy coat was gone. His white shirt was rolled to his forearms, a faint stubble darkening his jaw.Through the floor-to-ceiling one-way glass of the private ward, I stared blankly inside. On the bed lay Helena—the Luna—still wearing her oxygen mask. Her face was pale, but the monitor beside her beeped steady and strong. She wasn't dead. The so-called "failed resuscitation" had been nothing but a trap—Rex's play to lure Vanessa right into the snare."Eileen."Rex turned. His deep-set eyes landed on me, unreadable and heavy. He handed me a brown paper file."Read this."I opened it. Inside was a sealed genetic and bloodlin

My adoptive parents' faces went white as bone.My father scrambled up from the mud, still trying to claw his way out with lies:"You're talking nonsense! What silver dust? What mind link? My daughter is innocent! We're law-abiding human citizens—this is illegal detention!""Vanessa, let's go! These savage wolves don't play by the rules!"He reached for Vanessa's arm—didn't make it half a step. One of the guards slammed a fist into his gut. My father crumpled with a choked grunt, collapsing flat on the ground. My mother shrieked, clutching her head:"Murder! We'll take you to federal court! All of you—jail! Every last one!"Logan let out a cold laugh."Federal court? Miss Vanessa plotted to assassinate the Luna of the Firwood Pack. Under wolf law, that's treason—regicide. Capital punishment.""You really think you're walking out of here alive?"Vanessa went limp, frozen in place, still shaking her head like a madwoman:"No... no way! Rex has been texting me all week—he said I was though

When we see Rex, we'll have Vanessa get you fired with one word!"Logan didn't turn around. He opened the door and stepped out.A blast of freezing wind rushed into the cabin.Within seconds, dozens of hulking black-clad guards had materialized outside—all muscle, all cold eyes, radiating bloodlust. They'd surrounded the SUV before anyone could blink. They were parked at an abandoned outpost. Razor-wire fences loomed high. The air pressed down with suffocating menace

  • What She Could Never Be   Chapter 4

Harsh light spilled down the stairs, and several familiar silhouettes stepped in against the glare. My adoptive parents. And Vanessa. They'd clearly dressed up this morning—Vanessa in an expensive crimson velvet dress, reeking of luxury perfume from head to toe.My father stomped down the steps, grabbed my arm, and yanked me off the cold concrete floor."Lucky you. Logan sent word—the Alpha's in a good mood today, specifically ordered the whole family to the estate as guests."He glared at me, voice dropping to a warning snarl."Go wash your face and change. And listen close—when we get in front of those big shots, you keep your mouth shut. If you say one wrong word and ruin Vanessa's shot, I'll skin you alive when we get back."My mother rolled her eyes beside him, brushing dust off her hands with disgust."Useless curse of a girl. If the big shot hadn't specifically said the whole family, nobody would waste time dragging you along."Vanessa tilted her chin up, looking down at me like

I got home to the sound of laughter spilling through the living room.Vanessa sat right in the middle of the couch, a glass of red wine in hand, reenacting her "heroic" performance at the hospital for our adoptive parents with dramatic flair."...Rex's Beta actually spoke to me personally. He was incredibly polite."Vanessa's face glowed, flushed with excitement."That Luna won't make it through the night. Once she's gone, Rex will be at his most vulnerable. All I have to do is show up every day to comfort him, and that pack's Luna title is mine for the taking!"Our adoptive mother was already slicing fruit for her, beaming from ear to ear."Oh, I always said our Vanessa had the face of a queen! Once that happens, we'll be moving into the Northside estate—who's going to care about ordinary humans then?"Our adoptive father was grinning so wide his cheeks must've hurt, already calculating how many shops and territory dividends he could squeeze out of the pack.I changed my shoes in sile
