Chapter 1 Last Meal

作者: Beloved Farewell
As soon as I finished speaking, Serene started crying.

I did not look at her. Instead, I turned to look at the bright rays of sunlight outside the window.

"I wish to live in freedom in my last days."

She choked on her sobs and held my hand. "Alright. I'll do whatever you want. Let's go home."

I nodded in agreement.

However, the freedom I wanted meant going somewhere without her and her daughter.

Still, I had no desire to explain.

We returned to the mansion.

For eight years of our marriage, I had lived there. Yet I had never once felt that it was home.

It was way too cold.

Serene instructed the servants to buy all of her and Tina's favorite foods. Then, she handed me an apron.

"Joseph, I ordered your favorites," she said. "In the meantime, cook for us a few more times. I want to remember the taste."

I accepted the apron with a bitter smile.

In all these years, she had never once asked me what I truly liked. She always thought that I liked whatever she and Tina liked.

Forget it. I would cook them one more meal as a farewell.

I truly loved them, after all.

It took me almost two hours of dragging my exhausted and frail body around before I was done cooking.

By the end, I was practically on the verge of collapse.

"Let's eat."

As soon as we picked up our cutlery, Serene's phone rang. She glanced at it but did not answer it.

Tina scowled and grabbed it instead.

"Why aren't you answering Keith's call? He'll get mad. I'll do it if you won't!"

After answering the call, her voice instantly turned soft and sweet, filled with so much joy that even the man on the other end must have heard it.

"Did you miss me, Keith?"

While I knew this would happen, I still could not help but feel a bitter pang in my heart at the sight of her expression.

She used to smile at me that way too. I had raised her for eight whole years.

Keith Sawyer had only appeared six months ago, yet everything I once had no longer belonged to me.

Not long after, Serene accepted the phone with a smile.

I did not listen to what they were saying, but I already knew that would be the end of our dinner.

"Serene isn't even the true heir," I said. "Her father's illegitimate son has been studying abroad all this time. She's only managing the company on his behalf. Once he returns, she'll have to hand everything back. "You schemed and plotted, only to end up with nothing. Keith, you're far too naive. Still, there's one thing I still don't understand. I've already let you have her. Why do you still pin all your hatred on me?"Keith burst into laughter, his eyes bloodshot. "My dear brother—Serene's first love—died because of you! They were a great couple back then, but you just had to fall for Serene. He spotted you two hugging by the riverside, so he was forced to come up with a scheme to play the hero. That way, Serene would agree to marry him!"But his feet got tangled in the river weeds, and he died. You killed him! And now I'm like this because of you. I'll kill you!"He charged at me with the knife. Just as the knife was about to sink into my chest, a few policemen appeared out o

Still, I did not expect the phone to start buzzing with a call as soon as I turned it on.This time, I answered the call."Where are you, Joseph? Why didn't you answer my call? Why didn't the ambulance take you to the hospital? Where exactly are you?"Come back, alright? Your body is failing. You can't wander around by yourself. I'll do everything I can to help you live longer. Tina misses you a lot too."When I did not respond, she passed the phone to Tina."Dad, where are you? I miss your fish. I can't sleep at night at all. Come back and tell me stories like before. Hold me until I fall asleep. Dad, I miss you."Hearing their voices, I felt nothing."SSerene, this will be our last call. Don't contact me again. I don't need you to handle my funeral arrangements, and I don't need you to pray for me after my death either. I'll be forgetting both of you completely."I hung up and eased back down on the operating table.…The operation was a success. Recovery also went well.I

I coldly asked Serene, "Did you ever love me?"She was stunned. Instead of answering me, she replied with a question of her own. "If I didn't love you, why would I share the same bed with you for eight years? You're a grown man, Joseph. Stop being so fussy."I've ordered artificial kidneys for you. The doctor said that if the operation goes well, you can live longer. Come with me."Disappointment shone in my eyes. "What if it fails? I'll die right away, right? Serene, spare me. I only want to regain my freedom before I die."Sensing my resolution, she frantically grabbed me."No! You can't leave us. Even if you have to die, you must die by my side!"Suddenly, I felt the world spin around me as pain surged through my entire body. It was then that I realized I had forgotten to take my medication the night before.I hurriedly pulled out my bottle of pills from my pocket. Just as I unscrewed the cap, she started violently tugging me away.Caught by surprise, I lost my grip on the b

I scoffed. "Am I wrong? We're not blood-related anyway.""Joseph, when did you become so cold?""Am I cold? What about you then? Were you not cold when you called me a freeloader and a leech in your group chat? What about when you took my life away for a man you've only known for six months? You want to change the last name of the child I raised for eight years to Sawyer. Isn't that cold?"Silence fell. The only thing I could hear was harsh breathing."Y-You saw everything?""Yes. Every single word.""Where are you? I'll go to you now. I can explain this.""There's no need. Let's part ways from here on.""It's really not what you think! You…"Before she could finish speaking, Keith could be heard calling out to her."Serene, Tina, the cake's ready. Let's make a wish!"After calling out a response, Serene said to me, "Wait for me. I'll go to you once we're done celebrating Tina's birthday. Well, that's it for now."I looked down at the darkened screen before slapping myself

I had just walked out of the mansion when Mary called out to me, running over. She handed me a key."Sir, I was going to take you to my old place tomorrow so that I could also clean the place up, but you should go over tonight."She then shared a phone number with me."That's my daughter's number. Her name's Wendy. It just so happens that she'll be working in Portdale Hospital for a few days. Call her if you need anything."I was confused by her offer. After all, I had only known her for just over three months.Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke like she had read my mind."I won't hide it from you. You look very much like my late son. My daughter is a doctor at Trio Hospital in Capitol. Please… don't give up hope."I could no longer hold back my tears.A stranger's kindness brought a trace of warmth back to my dead, disappointed heart.Perhaps this was the reason I was brought back in time. This chance allowed me to know the truth of everything that happened, and it al

  • What Was Lost   Chapter 4 Keith's Scheme

I turned to leave, but Keith stopped me once more. This time, the grin on his face was gone, replaced by barely concealed rage. "Must I spell it all out for you? I'm going to steal everything away from you and the Warners! Then, I'll have those two kicked out of the family. "I don't love her or her b*stard kid anyway! Aren't you mad?"My face remained calm and blank, as if I felt nothing for Serene and Tina anymore.Even if I warned them, they wouldn't believe me anyway. They reaped what they sowed.Suppressing the agony stabbing through my heart, I replied coldly, "The two of them have nothing to do with me anymore. Whatever happens to them, they chose their own path. Move aside. I'm tired and need to rest."While I did not know why he insisted on provoking me, I was not interested in talking to him anymore.Suddenly, he leaned in close and whispered into my ear, "You're not angry about that? Well, then let me tell you this. I'm not even sick. Are you angry now?"My heart ski
