Chapter 2

作者: Anti-Trash Specialist
Like hell I was making him a feast. He could keep dreaming.

I lifted my phone, snapped a picture of the hand-cut prime beef going for forty-five dollars a pound behind the counter, and sent it over.

"Derek, I'm picking out the beef now. This cut look okay to you?"

Derek fired back instantly and started directing me through the screen.

"Whoa, that piece's way too fatty.

"Nobody wants anything that rich these days. Get the leaner cut. It looks dry, but it's got more chew to it.

"And since you're buying beef, add a pepper steak tomorrow. Heavy on the onions. That's my favorite.

"One more thing. Get him to knock off the change. Don't just stand there paying sticker price like an idiot."

I let out a snort and nearly rolled my eyes out of my head.

That beef was for the steak I was planning to sear at home for myself. Pepper steak, heavy on the onions?

That depended entirely on how hard the meal-pouch factory had gone with the additives.

"Yep, sounds good, Derek. It's a nice cut. I like it too."

I fired off the empty answer, powered the phone down, and dropped it in my bag.

I paid, went home, cracked a cold beer, seared that beef rare, and watched the game in total comfort.

Meanwhile, over in the company chat, Derek was still selling the dream.

"Dylan's putting in real work prepping tomorrow's dinner. You're all going to eat well, so make sure you thank him for it."

My coworkers flooded the chat with thanks and praise for my sacrifice.

I looked at the pile of messages and switched on Do Not Disturb.

A whole crowd of people who swung whichever way the wind blew.

Let them get their hopes up. It only made the surprise land harder.

The next morning Derek came in with his travel mug and made straight for my desk.

"So? How'd last night go? Everything ready?"

His eyes drifted to the empty space under my desk, like he was wondering where the groceries were.

"If you're running behind, I'll have Tyler and the others wash vegetables over lunch. It's a group thing, everybody should pitch in."

The faces of the people around us changed instantly.

Tyler Brennan in particular looked sick.

Everybody knew it was miserable work and nobody wanted anywhere near it.

But nobody dared say a word to the manager.

I stayed perfectly relaxed and kept working without looking up.

"Don't worry, Derek. I took your advice and didn't touch company time. I got it all done overnight. Nobody needs to help.

"I've got a delivery coming straight to the office. Everyone just needs to show up hungry."

Derek broke into a grin, especially pleased by the part about not touching company time.

Right then the receptionist called across the floor, "Dylan Woodward, your delivery's here."

Several enormous white foam coolers had been stacked by the front desk.

Derek's eyes lit up at the sight of them.

"Look at you, Dylan. You even sprang for insulated coolers. Those couldn't have been cheap.

"What's in there, the crab or the braised pork?"

He circled the coolers twice and reached for a lid.

"Let me see what you made."

Every one of them was packed with the meal pouches I'd ordered.

I got there first, clamped a hand down on the lid, and lowered my voice like I was sharing a secret.

"Derek, these are all hot dishes. A buddy of mine kept them warm the whole way over. If we open them now the heat escapes and they won't taste right.

"Plus the smell's strong enough to get into your clothes, and it'll bother everyone trying to work.

"Go relax in your office. Once I've got it all set up you can come eat and say a few words to the department."

Derek looked down at his mirror-polished shoes and thought that over.

"Fine, you handle it... Actually, hold on."

He caught me by the arm and dropped his voice next to my ear.

"If you could afford coolers, you didn't spend the whole three hundred, did you?"

"Yes, ma'am."Two security officers came in, got Derek under both arms where he lay like a wet sack, and hauled him straight out.He was still thrashing and shouting, eyes locked on that tableful of meal pouches, sick with regret."Ma'am! I was wrong! I know I was wrong! Give me one more chance! I've got parents to look after and kids at home!"The sound faded out at the far end of the hallway soon enough. If he hadn't gotten so greedy, if he hadn't gone after the new guy, maybe he'd have gotten to leave with his dignity. There's no maybe. The next few days, a storm tore through the company. You never know until you look, and once they looked, it was worse than anyone guessed.Over the years Derek had used his position to pad invoices, take kickbacks from suppliers, and pocket team-event funds. Nearly a hundred and fifty thousand dollars of company money, all told.Wilder still, he'd paid cash for a condo downtown with what he'd stolen, and stuffed his whole crowd of buddies

You could have heard a pin drop."Ma'am... I'm sorry, what?"Derek was frozen too.He stood there with his mouth open, staring at me, still not catching what Aunt Victoria meant.Aunt Victoria reached over and clapped me firmly on the shoulder."You want to call him connected? Then let's make sure you understand exactly how."Dylan is my older sister's only son. My nephew."He came to me and said he wanted to start at the bottom, and he wore me down until I let him."And now you're telling me he threw away a future like that to run a scam with a meal-pouch outfit for a few hundred dollars?"The line went off in the break room like a bomb.Everyone sucked in a breath, eyes about to come out of their heads.Derek looked like he'd been hit by lightning and couldn't produce a sound.Aunt Victoria kept going, every word landing hard."As for that thirty thousand, that was performance money Dylan and his team earned working nights and weekends. With your numbers, Derek, did you

The more he talked, the more convinced he got, flinging every accusation he could invent at me."Ma'am, use your judgment here. I held that money for the good of the department, and he found a way to exploit it."How else do you explain the supplier being right around the corner from us? He set this up with his family so they could eat the company's money. He's connected to them. He has to be."But Derek stating the exact opposite of the truth left a lot of people who didn't know the story completely lost. They looked at me, then at Derek, and started murmuring, because now nobody could tell what had actually happened."You think Dylan really took a kickback?""No way. He's always seemed straight with people."Huh.Derek's mud was landing nowhere near the target, but he did get one thing right.I am connected.Just not to the people who make the meal pouches.I glanced at Aunt Victoria's darkening face, sighed, ran a hand through my hair, and let a bitter smile show.I spre

My coworkers exploded, staring at Derek in disbelief."Three hundred bucks? Upstairs approved thirty thousand, and Derek turns around and gives us three hundred?""He expected us to eat like kings on that? He was just messing with us."Derek's face cycled through three colors. He clearly hadn't counted on me keeping the books this carefully. He'd counted even less on me pulling his pants down in front of everyone.Aunt Victoria brought a hand down on the table hard enough to rattle every pouch on it."I approved that money for one thing: take these people somewhere, let them relax, feed them well, show them a good time."And you? By the time it gets down here, thirty thousand dollars has turned into three hundred dollars of food in a plastic bag?"Did the other twenty-nine thousand seven hundred sprout wings and fly off? Or did it go into your pocket? Well?"Derek went bone white, sweat sliding down his forehead, and started stammering."Ma'am, ma'am, let me explain. This is,

Looking at that tableful of stomach-turning feed, Derek struck first, jabbing a finger in my face."Dylan, what exactly are you playing at? The chairwoman carves out time from an impossible schedule to come down here, and you deliberately serve garbage to insult who, exactly?"You got a problem with the company? Or a problem with me?"Having finished with me, he spun to Aunt Victoria and flipped instantly into the loyal deputy betrayed beyond words."Ma'am, look at him. He always seemed like such a solid kid. I had no idea he had this in him."I told him a dozen times to take the money and prepare something decent. He could have bought fresh ingredients and cooked them himself, that would have been fine."Instead he goes and buys this unlabeled industrial junk. If this puts everyone in the hospital and drags the department's name through the mud, that's on me as the manager."He slapped his thigh like he'd been deceived on a historic scale.Watching Derek shrug off blame that f

"Keep twenty or thirty for yourself, buy yourself a drink, something. The rest comes back to the department. We've got to make this stretch, you know?"Wow.He'd swallowed twenty-nine thousand seven hundred dollars, and he still wanted to scrape the fat off the scraps of the last three hundred.I choked down my disgust and gave him a smile that never reached my eyes."You give an instruction, Derek. How would I ignore it?"Don't worry. Soon as I'm done I'll send you the receipts and whatever's left. Books will be spotless, nothing shaved off.""Huh. I didn't have you figured for it, Dylan, but you know how to play ball."He raised an eyebrow, thrilled that he had the department's softest touch this thoroughly under his thumb. Why else would I do his job, save him money, and make him look good in front of the staff?"Go on and set it up. Call me when the presentation's ready. Nobody picks up a fork before I get there."He walked back to his office in wonderful spirits.Probab
