Chapter 3

作者: Anti-Trash Specialist
"Keep twenty or thirty for yourself, buy yourself a drink, something. The rest comes back to the department. We've got to make this stretch, you know?"

Wow.

He'd swallowed twenty-nine thousand seven hundred dollars, and he still wanted to scrape the fat off the scraps of the last three hundred.

I choked down my disgust and gave him a smile that never reached my eyes.

"You give an instruction, Derek. How would I ignore it?

"Don't worry. Soon as I'm done I'll send you the receipts and whatever's left. Books will be spotless, nothing shaved off."

"Huh. I didn't have you figured for it, Dylan, but you know how to play ball."

He raised an eyebrow, thrilled that he had the department's softest touch this thoroughly under his thumb.

Why else would I do his job, save him money, and make him look good in front of the staff?

"Go on and set it up. Call me when the presentation's ready. Nobody picks up a fork before I get there."

He walked back to his office in wonderful spirits.

Probably already picturing himself working through a beef banquet while counting the twenty-nine thousand seven hundred sitting in his personal account.

Shame.

I'm not that fond of paying for other people's theft.

At six that evening the break room became a dining room.

I'd opened every cooler, pulled the contents out, and laid tablecloths over the whole spread.

I killed the overhead lights on purpose. My coworkers sat around the tables we'd pushed together, forks in hand, breathing in the strange spiced smell and practically drooling.

"That smells incredible. Is that braised pork?"

"I smell crab."

Derek took the head of the table like he was holding court and cleared his throat to start his speech.

That was when the laugh came from the doorway.

"Everyone's here already. Looks like I timed it perfectly."

Aunt Victoria pushed the door open, presence turned all the way up.

Derek jumped hard enough to nearly drop his mug.

He'd never dreamed the owner, who never had a free hour, would actually turn up to a small department dinner.

But he recovered fast, hurrying over with a fawning smile that pushed every crease in his face together.

"Ms. Langford, you came down yourself. I was just about to report to you, this whole dinner was cooked by Dylan personally.

"The budget was, ahem, we decided against a big restaurant, but eating here shows we're taking the company's push for careful spending seriously. It's all heart, ma'am."

Aunt Victoria nodded pleasantly, her eyes moving over the covered tables.

"Good, good. That's exactly the kind of down-to-earth thinking I like. I hear Dylan can cook, and I skipped dinner, so let's eat."

Derek shot me a smug look and waved a hand at me.

"Dylan, the chairwoman's spoken. What are you standing around for? Get those covers off and let her taste your work."

I stood beside the table, looking at all that greed and triumph on Derek's face, and felt my mouth go thin and cold.

"Of course, Derek.

"This is the deluxe twenty-person spread I put together with the three-hundred-dollar budget you personally approved."

The words were barely out before I yanked the tablecloth away.

No careful plating. No steaming home-cooked dishes.

Dozens of foil meal pouches, torn open, standing upright in the coolers.

The braised pork had the gray sheen of meat that had been dead a very long time, capped with a hardened layer of industrial lard.

The so-called crab was two bags of crab-flavored starch sticks, still squashed together inside the plastic.

The pepper steak was the disaster inside the disaster: a black lump of sauce with barely a strand of beef visible.

Cheap preservative and bottom-shelf artificial flavor bloomed through the room and hit the back of everyone's throat.

Dead silence.

Every person there froze with a fork suspended in midair.

Derek's face went green.

He jabbed a violently shaking finger at the table and roared.

"D-Dylan! Have you lost your mind?

"The chairwoman is standing right here. I told you to cook dinner. What is this, hog slop?"

"Yes, ma'am."Two security officers came in, got Derek under both arms where he lay like a wet sack, and hauled him straight out.He was still thrashing and shouting, eyes locked on that tableful of meal pouches, sick with regret."Ma'am! I was wrong! I know I was wrong! Give me one more chance! I've got parents to look after and kids at home!"The sound faded out at the far end of the hallway soon enough. If he hadn't gotten so greedy, if he hadn't gone after the new guy, maybe he'd have gotten to leave with his dignity. There's no maybe. The next few days, a storm tore through the company. You never know until you look, and once they looked, it was worse than anyone guessed.Over the years Derek had used his position to pad invoices, take kickbacks from suppliers, and pocket team-event funds. Nearly a hundred and fifty thousand dollars of company money, all told.Wilder still, he'd paid cash for a condo downtown with what he'd stolen, and stuffed his whole crowd of buddies

You could have heard a pin drop."Ma'am... I'm sorry, what?"Derek was frozen too.He stood there with his mouth open, staring at me, still not catching what Aunt Victoria meant.Aunt Victoria reached over and clapped me firmly on the shoulder."You want to call him connected? Then let's make sure you understand exactly how."Dylan is my older sister's only son. My nephew."He came to me and said he wanted to start at the bottom, and he wore me down until I let him."And now you're telling me he threw away a future like that to run a scam with a meal-pouch outfit for a few hundred dollars?"The line went off in the break room like a bomb.Everyone sucked in a breath, eyes about to come out of their heads.Derek looked like he'd been hit by lightning and couldn't produce a sound.Aunt Victoria kept going, every word landing hard."As for that thirty thousand, that was performance money Dylan and his team earned working nights and weekends. With your numbers, Derek, did you

The more he talked, the more convinced he got, flinging every accusation he could invent at me."Ma'am, use your judgment here. I held that money for the good of the department, and he found a way to exploit it."How else do you explain the supplier being right around the corner from us? He set this up with his family so they could eat the company's money. He's connected to them. He has to be."But Derek stating the exact opposite of the truth left a lot of people who didn't know the story completely lost. They looked at me, then at Derek, and started murmuring, because now nobody could tell what had actually happened."You think Dylan really took a kickback?""No way. He's always seemed straight with people."Huh.Derek's mud was landing nowhere near the target, but he did get one thing right.I am connected.Just not to the people who make the meal pouches.I glanced at Aunt Victoria's darkening face, sighed, ran a hand through my hair, and let a bitter smile show.I spre

My coworkers exploded, staring at Derek in disbelief."Three hundred bucks? Upstairs approved thirty thousand, and Derek turns around and gives us three hundred?""He expected us to eat like kings on that? He was just messing with us."Derek's face cycled through three colors. He clearly hadn't counted on me keeping the books this carefully. He'd counted even less on me pulling his pants down in front of everyone.Aunt Victoria brought a hand down on the table hard enough to rattle every pouch on it."I approved that money for one thing: take these people somewhere, let them relax, feed them well, show them a good time."And you? By the time it gets down here, thirty thousand dollars has turned into three hundred dollars of food in a plastic bag?"Did the other twenty-nine thousand seven hundred sprout wings and fly off? Or did it go into your pocket? Well?"Derek went bone white, sweat sliding down his forehead, and started stammering."Ma'am, ma'am, let me explain. This is,

Looking at that tableful of stomach-turning feed, Derek struck first, jabbing a finger in my face."Dylan, what exactly are you playing at? The chairwoman carves out time from an impossible schedule to come down here, and you deliberately serve garbage to insult who, exactly?"You got a problem with the company? Or a problem with me?"Having finished with me, he spun to Aunt Victoria and flipped instantly into the loyal deputy betrayed beyond words."Ma'am, look at him. He always seemed like such a solid kid. I had no idea he had this in him."I told him a dozen times to take the money and prepare something decent. He could have bought fresh ingredients and cooked them himself, that would have been fine."Instead he goes and buys this unlabeled industrial junk. If this puts everyone in the hospital and drags the department's name through the mud, that's on me as the manager."He slapped his thigh like he'd been deceived on a historic scale.Watching Derek shrug off blame that f
