Chapter 1

Author: Elara Faye
A year ago, when my mom was eight months pregnant, she slipped and fell into this river.

To be exact, the one who died… was my little brother.

That summer, I went back home. My dad, who had always treated me with distant indifference, and sometimes even hit me, suddenly said he wanted to take me fishing. I did not dare say no. I knew that if I talked back even a little, he would not hesitate to hit me.

"Elaine, do you still have enough money for college?" he asked out of nowhere on the way to Sorrowmere River.

For a second, I felt something warm in my chest. After all these years, this was the first time he had ever shown concern for me.

"Yeah, it's enough," I said quickly.

I knew better than anyone that he hated spending money on me.

At home, only Grandma treated me well. She had even bought me my phone.

Dad gave me four hundred a month. Everything else I needed, I earned myself through livestreaming.

We arrived at the Sorrowmere River in our village. While my dad prepared the bait, I quietly started my livestream.

[Whoa, new map unlocked today? Are you fishing?] someone typed.

[Welcome, everyone. Today's stream is fishing,] I replied in text, since my dad was right there.

I did not understand why he had to come at noon.

The sun was so bright I could barely keep my eyes open, but somehow, I could not shake the feeling that something in the river was watching me.

Not a fish.

It felt more like… something sentient.

After my dad finished setting up the bait, he urged me to cast the line.

It did not take long before I got a bite.

When I reeled it in, I froze. "Why is it… dead?"

"Dead? Elaine, let me see." My dad took one look, and his eyes lit up with a strange excitement.

"A dead fish… and it still took the bait…" he muttered, over and over, like he was repeating some kind of ritual chant.

Then he smiled. It was the kind of smile that made my skin crawl.

I glanced at my livestream. The viewer count had skyrocketed. However, instead of excitement, the chat had been flooded with warnings.

[Streamer, there's someone behind you.]

[Get out. There's something wrong with the water.]

I streamed often, so I was used to comments like those. I figured they were just bored and messing around.

As I scrolled, one username caught my eye.

Alaric Vane.

[Leave now! A dead fish… and it still took the bait… Reel in your line and go.]

I tapped into his profile. His avatar showed a man in a black robe holding a staff made of bone.

A classic necromancer.

Thinking about my dad's strange behavior, I quickly sent him a friend request.

It seemed like his message had stirred up the chat.

[Alaric, stop spouting nonsense. I fish all the time. Never heard of that.]

[Yeah, streamer, ignore him. He just wants attention.]

[Still… you should leave. Your dad looks creepy. Who gets that excited over a dead fish?]

[Agreed. Run. Your life matters more.]

I looked closer and noticed something else. His profile had products listed.

Figures. Just another clout chaser, I thought.

However, then I remembered the eerie smile on my dad's face. I tightened my grip on the fish and decided to throw it back into the river.

"Stop! What the hell do you think you're doing, you ungrateful brat?!" my dad roared, his face twisting with rage.

He snatched the dead fish from my hands and clutched it to his chest like it was some priceless treasure.

It was clearly dead.

However, its eyes…

They seemed to glow faintly.

I only looked for a second before I turned away, my heart pounding.

"What are you standing there for? Keep fishing! One fish isn't enough for a meal!" he shouted.

Before I could react, his hand came down hard across my face.

I bit back the pain, picked up the rod again, and cast my line into the water.

I heard a dull grunt. However, … there was no pain.Slowly, I opened my eyes.A man was standing in front of me.I had no idea when he had appeared. He stood there, calm and controlled. He wore a long dark coat, a leather belt fastened at his waist. Everything about him looked sharp and clean, like he did not belong to this world at all."Alaric? Didn't you say you'd wait on the other side?" I called out."I figured you wouldn't trust me," he said. "So I came over."His gaze flicked over me. "As expected. You're not wearing the banana leaves."I had no comeback for that, so I stayed silent."Get lost! This is none of your business!" my dad shouted, pointing at him.Alaric did not even look bothered. "Are you sure you're in any position to say that?" He gestured behind my dad.Something crawled out of the water. Its body was twisted and deformed. Its face was a sickly green, its teeth long and jagged. It moved fast. Too fast.A rotting stench spread instantly through the a

Doubt gnawed at me. How did Grandma know so much about all of that?"However, … Grandma, he saved my life," I said.I stared at her, still unsure."Come on. Let's bury him by the river. We'll end this once and for all."Back then, your father believed him and wanted to trade your life for your brother’s."I stopped him. I thought he had given up after that, but I was wrong." Grandma sighed. So Alaric really was a liar.I told Grandma everything that had happened, step by step."Elaine, you've been fooled. Banana leaves are used to allow spirits to hide."In the daytime, they can stay inside that environment and avoid outside interference."As she spoke, she pulled the banana leaves off me. Then she took the baby's body from my back and carried it herself.A chill ran through me."Grandma… if you carry him, won't he drain your life too?"She smiled. "I've lived long enough. You're still young. You need to live."Tears filled my eyes.At least… I still had Grandma.Thinki

I finally released the breath I did not realize I had been holding and kept walking toward the river, the baby's body still strapped to my back. Then suddenly, I heard it.Footsteps. Fast.Someone was running toward me."There's only one path to the river. That little brat runs fast. I shouldn't have listened to my mom."Just one more night. After tonight, Victor will come back. We have to find her."My blood turned icy. It was my parents. So everything Alaric said… was true.I could not let them find me. I hurried toward the river, trying to stay quiet. However, panic made me clumsy. My foot snapped down on a dry branch.Crack.The sound was loud enough. They had definitely heard it.I bolted. However, the terrain there was uneven and full of holes. My foot slipped into a dip in the ground and I fell hard. Before I could get up, my dad rushed over and kicked me. Pain shot through my body as I struggled to stand."What are you carrying on your back!" he shouted.I looked

Right now, he was the only person I could trust. At least… he had not tried to hurt me.Thankfully, my parents did not come back to bother me again. However, when I looked at the floor near my door, my heart dropped. There were footprints.Muddy ones.Something felt very wrong.I had come in through the window, so why were there footprints at the door? Had someone followed me?Were my parents awake?I did not have time to figure it out.It was already 11:50 p.m.That thing was coming.I quickly scattered glutinous rice all over the doorway, wrapped myself tightly in banana leaves, then hugged the teddy bear with the baby's body inside and lay down on my bed.I held my breath and waited. The thought of myself wrapped in leaves with a corpse pressed against my chest almost made me laugh, but the fear swallowed it before it could come out.Midnight came.Nothing happened. No spirit. Not even the sound of frogs. The silence tonight felt wrong. Too heavy. Too complete.Anot

My dad had me pinned down. My mom had lost it again, muttering over and over, "Drink it. If you drink it, my Victor will come back."She scooped up another bowl of soup and tried to force it into my mouth. I gathered all my strength into my foot and stomped hard on my dad's foot.He cried out in pain and loosened his grip. I did not hesitate. I lunged forward and slammed straight into my mom. That was it.My dad snapped."If you don't drink today, you're not leaving this house alive!" His eyes were bloodshot, veins bulging across his forehead. He grabbed a knife from the corner and swung it at me. I ran for the door without thinking.Forget the restless spirit. Forget the life exchange.None of that mattered anymore. All I knew was that if I did not get out right then, my dad would actually kill me."What is going on here!" Grandma was back. The moment she saw the knife in my dad's hand, she rushed over and stood in front of me."Elaine, go back to your room and sleep. I'll

When I got home, I searched every corner of my room. I found nothing.Doubt crept back in.There was no way I had been sharing a space with a corpse for six days and did not notice. Even if I somehow missed it, the smell alone should have been enough to wake me up.[Alaric, are you messing with me? There's no corpse in my room. No smell either.] I typed, irritation slipping into my tone.[Does your room sometimes have a strange fragrance?] he replied.I frowned. However, … he was right.Over the past few days, there really had been a faint, unusual scent drifting through my room from time to time.[If it's an infant's body, it can be preserved in a special way. The corpse is kept in a specific environment for a long time, turning it into a grayish-white, wax-like structure.][In that state, it won't rot or smell. Instead, it releases a kind of 'inducing scent.'][That scent helps stabilize the soul attachment.]My fingers went icy as I read. Then suddenly, I thought of some
