Chapter 2

Penulis: Washing Wheat
Back then, every time Elias went on a business trip, if he missed either a good morning kiss or a goodnight kiss, I clung to him until he made it up to me.

Sometimes, I honestly felt like a loan shark. If Elias missed one kiss, he had to repay it ten times over.

The first time I said that out loud, the man almost laughed from irritation.

“Nancy,” he said, sounding half amused and half exasperated, “do you not think you are being a little unreasonable?”

I blinked innocently, unaware of the problem. Then I cupped his face with both hands and kissed him over and over, completely satisfied.

Moments like that happened often. Eventually, Elias got used to it.

He stopped showing obvious resistance.

However, when I remembered the way he subtly dodged my kiss the night before, my chest tightened. He probably never wanted any of it in the first place.

I waved my hands in panic and quickly said, “No need.”

After speaking, I lowered my head again and quietly added, with little confidence,

“We do not need good morning kisses or goodnight kisses anymore.”

Elias stared at me without moving, and his eyes darkened little by little.

After a long moment, he finally spoke in a flat tone that sounded strangely stubborn.

“Fine. Whatever you want.”

I let out a quiet breath of relief.

However, sadness still crept into my chest.

He really did see those things as a burden.

After I washed up, I found that Elias had already made breakfast.

He always moved faster than I did.

Once he finished eating, he sat there watching me without blinking.

I quietly sped up my eating. Elias frowned slightly and said in a calm voice, “No rush.”

I nodded with my cheeks puffed full of food.

Ten minutes later, Elias was getting ready to drive me to work like usual. It was already getting late.

The floating comments appeared again, bouncing excitedly across my vision.

[If I remember right, today's the day the male and female leads meet, isn't it?]

[Yep. The female lead started working at the male lead's company today. She's capable, socially smart, and most importantly, she knows boundaries.]

[That's why the male lead feels relaxed around her.]

[Once he meets someone like the female lead, he'll definitely dump the clingy side character without hesitation.]

My eyes dimmed.

That day was the day he met her.

A heavy feeling settled in my chest, and the air around me suddenly felt thin.

When Elias saw me standing there blankly, he finally reminded me, “Get in the car.”

I did not move.

“You should go. I will get to work myself.”

Instead of leaving, Elias shut the car door and walked toward me with long strides. His sharp gaze swept over me.

“You are upset,” he said with certainty. “Because I avoided your goodnight kiss last night, right?”

I looked up at him blankly. “No.”

How could I be upset?

Those comments had made me realize how clingy I really was.

I only wanted to change.

Elias clearly did not believe me. He stepped closer and pressed the issue.

“Then why will you not let me drive you to work?”

My eyes flickered nervously. I hid the real reason and answered in a guilty tone.

“I think… maybe we should give each other some personal space.”

Elias froze for a second, as if he had not expected me to say that.

He finally stopped questioning me. “Fine. I will pick you up after work.”

He did not wait for my answer.

After saying that, Elias got back in the car and drove away.

I could not focus on anything the entire day.

The comments kept saying Elias had driven the female lead home instead, and that there was no way he would come pick me up.

They even mocked me for being hopeful.

So when I arrived outside the company after work, nervous and uneasy, I did not see his familiar car anywhere.

Before that, Elias always arrived at least ten minutes early to pick me up. I stared at the empty stretch of road, lost in thought.

Then a clear, cool voice sounded behind me.

“Nancy? What are you doing standing here? Cannot get a ride?

“Actually, that makes sense. It is rush hour right now. Do not bother squeezing onto the subway. I can take you home on my motorcycle.”

I turned around.

A young man stood behind me, dressed in flashy clothes with a motorcycle helmet tucked under his arm.

He had only started working at the company two days earlier.

After spending only one night on that bed, my entire body felt sore. My back ached, my waist hurt, and every movement felt uncomfortable. While Elias made breakfast, I slipped my arms around his lean waist from behind and mumbled awkwardly, “Um… can we move back today?”The man thought about it for a second and nodded thoughtfully.“Good point. The big bed at the villa gives me more room to work with.”Me: …The silence felt heavy. When we arrived at the villa, a fluffy calico kitten came wobbling toward me, meowing nonstop. It looked only three or four months old.Delighted, I scooped the kitten into my arms. Then I suddenly remembered the scratches on the back of Elias’s hand. “You prepared this?”Elias sounded ridiculously proud of himself. “Got it from Yoana. It is the baby of that big orange cat you always feed.”My nose stung slightly. “However, do you not hate cats?”Elias answered like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “However, you like them.”I looked at

Only then did I finally realize what that banquet actually was.It was Yoana’s engagement party. Her fiancé was not Elias.I stared at the man beside me in shock. As if he sensed my gaze, he lowered his head slightly to look at me. “What is wrong?”I suppressed the confusion swirling inside me and shook my head. “Nothing.”The floating comments exploded. They were clearly just as confused as I was.[Where the heck did the plot suddenly go?][Why was the female lead suddenly getting engaged to a random side character who had never appeared before? Could someone explain that to me?][No clue.][He was not exactly random. If I remembered correctly, he was the female lead’s childhood neighbor. They had liked each other for years.][Then what about our male lead? Is he just here to celebrate or what?][Relax. Doesn't the male lead already have the side character by his side anyway?][Forget weird ships. If this pairing is right in front of me, I'm shipping it! They actually lo

“It is me. Elias. The thief already ran away.”I was still scared and stayed cautious. “How do I know you are really Elias?”The person outside sounded like he was grinding his teeth.“Nancy, you have been running away from home for exactly seven days, eleven hours, and thirty‑nine minutes. Is that enough proof for you?”Silently, I calculated the time in my head. Then I finally let him in.Elias looked terrible. His expression was dark as storm clouds. After he glanced around my apartment once, his mood worsened.“You are seriously living in a place like this? And as for the breakup, I do not agree. Come back with me.”I shook my head and took two steps backward, putting distance between us. “No.”“You would rather spend every night scared out of your mind than stay at my place?”I blinked, and a tear rolled down my face.It was only a reflexive tear from being frightened earlier. With reddened eyes, I nodded pitifully.“Yes.”The moment Elias saw me crying, panic flashed

[The side character isn't seriously going to think the male lead likes her because of this, right? Please. Men have physical needs, okay?][Called it. The side character was totally playing hard to get.]This time, I did not blindly believe the comments. I could not shake the feeling that there were still many things left unsaid between Elias and me.I leaned forward and pressed a light kiss against his moving throat, stopping him before he could continue.“Elias, are you doing this because you like me, or just because you have needs?”The man froze for a moment. Then a low laugh escaped him.“Nancy,” he said slowly, “I have hands. Besides that, there are plenty of other ways to deal with those kinds of needs. I…”Before he could finish, his phone rang. Elias clicked his tongue in annoyance. After he heard whatever was said on the other end of the line, his expression changed at once. The moment he hung up, he started getting dressed, clearly preparing to leave.“Something ha

My mind felt completely tangled. The moment I heard the word breakup, I instinctively avoided Elias’s gaze. I turned and ran back to the bedroom. For some reason, I suddenly remembered the scratches on the back of Elias’s hand when he washed my underwear earlier.A few tiny marks. They looked like they had been left by a cat.We had used up all the bandages at home last time. After thinking about it, I decided to go buy some. At the same time, I needed space to calm down.Deep down, I still felt like Elias was not the kind of person the comments made him out to be.My luck was terrible. On the way back, a heavy storm started without warning. A passing car splashed muddy water all over me.In the chaos, someone bumped into me, and I fell hard onto the ground, scraping my knee badly.I forced the tears back into my eyes.I held the box of bandages tightly against my chest, gritted my teeth, and ran home through the pain.As I kept running, an umbrella suddenly appeared above

I lowered my eyes.I was about to slip away quietly when Yoana suddenly called out to me. Her eyes curved into a smile.“You are Mr. Carter’s girlfriend, right? You are really pretty. Oh, and my name is Yoana. I like cats too.”I blinked in confusion.I was about to respond when Elias moved too quickly. Before I could say anything, he had already ushered Yoana out the door. Then he walked straight into the bedroom. When he came back out, he held another pillow in his hands. It was the one I had bought for him.Without any change in expression, he handed it to me.“Your room probably does not have a pillow, right? Use this one.”After a brief pause, he added, “This one is comfortable.”I stared at it for a few seconds before reaching out to take it. A bitter feeling flashed through my chest, and I answered with difficulty. “Okay.”The comments had been right again.Elias had chosen the pillow Yoana gave him and returned mine instead.Maybe he was afraid I would make a scene
