Chapter 5

Author: Chimera Sand
“I was really eaten up with guilt yesterday. I never expected you to have such a bad temper. I’ve always treated Joel like a brother. Don’t be mad anymore, okay?”

Mandy said, wiping at tears that were not there. “It’s still my fault though…”

“If I’d known my limits, you wouldn’t have left. Mrs. Xanders, even though I was so guilty I almost jumped off the rooftop, please don’t blame…”

“Are you done?” my mother cut her off with a sneer. “Girls these days really don’t learn anything good at such a young age. You just constantly put on an act that you’re a pure and innocent girl among the boys.

“My daughter doesn’t bother arguing with you because she was raised to know boundaries and not casually spew foul language. But what about your parents?

“All you do every day is dive into groups of boys. Do you even know what the boundaries between girls and boys should be? If your parents didn’t teach you, then I’ll teach you.

"Behavior like yours is... What was that phrase on the internet? Oh, yeah. Pick-me girl."

I could not help laughing.

I quickly shoved her away and said, “You’re gross.

“We’re not close. Please stop pretending we are.”

Mandy stiffened.

After fully registering what my mother had said, her eyes instantly reddened. She stood there at a loss, completely flustered.

Leo immediately jumped in to defend her. “Mrs. Xanders, how could you be so rude? Mandy almost jumped off a building because of your daughter!”

I glanced at him.

I remembered one of those insults from yesterday. “So, what if she hears it? Who wants a crippled girl anyway? Only Joel is kind enough to keep her around, right?”

Those words had come from him.

I suddenly felt sick.

“Helen, I…”

Joel instinctively tried to step toward me, reaching out as he always used to, wanting to take my hand.

“Joel…”

Hearing Mandy’s soft call and seeing her swollen, reddened eyes, Joel finally stopped.

He pulled out a tissue to wipe her tears and said, unable to hold back, “Mrs. Xanders, that was too much. Mandy didn’t mean it. This whole thing was Helen throwing a tantrum. It almost even led to Mandy trying to kill herself.”

“Mandy is young. She just graduated from high school. She’s only nineteen…”

“Nineteen?” my mother raised an eyebrow, then smiled. “You say nineteen is young, but my daughter is only eighteen.”

“They’re both in the prime of their youth. My daughter didn’t do anything wrong, so how did she become some unforgivable sinner who almost got someone killed, just like you said?”

“Joel, I still remember how you used to take Helen out to play when you were little, how you swore you’d protect her. But you’ve changed far too much. I am truly disappointed in you.”

Joel was left speechless.

Even as he wiped Mandy’s tears, he was clearly distracted.

The others behind him probably could not find anything to refute either and said no more.

I found it pointless and was about leave with my mother.

However, suddenly, Joel grabbed my wrist.

Lowering his head, he noticed the winter clothes in the shopping bags and said instinctively, “There’s no need to buy such thick clothes for Eidolon City…”

As he spoke, something seemed to occur to him.

His eyes lit up, and the hand gripping my wrist tightened.

“So, that’s why you blocked me and threw a tantrum. It was just you trying to mean something else.”

“Buying winter clothes… you want to go skiing in Artarca with us, don’t you?” He convinced himself as he spoke, the corners of his mouth lifting uncontrollably.

“Alright, stop sulking. I’ll book the tickets later. The flight is 10 o’clock in the morning. We’ll go together.”

“You’re wrong!”

I yanked my hand free and mercilessly shattered his fantasy.

"I'm not going to Artarca with you. I'm heading to the Capital City. Besides, my hearing has been restored for a while now."

The smug smile on Joel’s face faded.

I had been patient for so long.It was finally time to end the game. After taking over the company, I snatched several major deals right out of Joel’s hands.Yorks Corporation was no match for Xanders Corporation.Besides, he was known for being a thug in college. He dropped out of college early and did not have much education to speak of.Every time he confronted a business partner to try to persuade them to choose him, he failed.“Helen, are you taking revenge on me?”“It’s been over eight years. Haven’t you calmed down yet? Can we talk?”While he anxiously tried to reach me, I personally submitted the evidence of his tax evasion and money laundering over the past few years since taking over Yorks Corporation. As a result, Joel was arrested at the airport.I stood not far away, silently watching as the police handcuffed him.He looked pained, as if trying to say something. I stepped closer and heard him asking with his face twisted in anguish, “Why?”I could not help but

I watched him stand there, lost in thought.I turned aside to avoid him and went upstairs. The next day, Joel was no longer downstairs. In the dorm, a girl who often got up early to exercise told me, “He said he’s going back to school and won’t bother you anymore.”I nodded in thanks and went on with my life.Soon after, I learned from a mutual friend’s social media that Joel was dating Mandy. He often sent messages complaining.[These two are inseparable every day, flaunting their love. It is enough already.][I heard Joel was named the school’s most popular guy. It makes sense. He has good looks and a wealthy family. No wonder so many people had crushes on him.][I heard Mandy got really jealous.][By the way, Helen, how have you been lately?]He was subtly checking up on me.However, I was busy.I had classes, club activities, and spent time with my roommates. So, whenever we chatted, I kept it brief and perfunctory. Not long after, our mutual friend messaged me. At the time, all his attention was on comforting Mandy. He never noticed that I was not wearing my hearing aid that day.Through mutual friends, I learned that Joel was looking for me.I was not surprised one bit.Perhaps he had finally found out that my hearing had been cured, and only then belatedly realized that I had already heard every one of those cruel words he said in the private room that day. However, none of that mattered anymore. My life in the Capital City was fulfilling and busy. Although sports training was exhausting, I was dead tired every day and got several shades darker, but I had never felt so light and free.I joined many clubs and made lots of new friends.I even attended a mixer organized by an upper-class student and exchanged numbers with a few guys. So, when I saw that familiar figure downstairs at the women’s dorm, I was genuinely surprised.I intended to take a detour and leave. However, Joel spotted me first and strode over. His tone carried a

“If you don’t reply, believe it or not, I’ll take Mandy overseas for a trip.”I ignored him completely.I did not respond and just blocked and deleted again. As the start of the semester drew near, I simply boarded a plane and went straight to the Capital City.Meanwhile, Joel nervously knocked on my front door.In his hands were two little dolls he had knitted himself, one blue, one pink, exactly how he imagined the two of us.Thinking about the look of surprise on my face when I saw them, he could not wait any longer. However, when the door opened, the person he expected to see was not there. He asked instinctively, “Mr. and Mrs. Xanders, is Helen home?”“It’s been a whole summer since I last saw her. I brought her a gift, and school’s about to start. I’m going with her.”My mother’s expression was calm as she replied, “I forgot to tell you, Joel. Helen has already gone to school to register. You won’t be going with her.”Joel froze for a moment but quickly decided that I

My parents smiled when I mentioned that.“She went to another city for treatment. Her hearing has fully recovered now.”Joel’s mother was overjoyed, yet she still was not ready to give up.“Helen, why don’t you wait until Joel comes back before deciding? He has the right to know, too.”“You followed him around every day when you were little, and you even saved his life. How could feelings like that just disappear?”I looked at the rippling surface of the tea on the coffee table. In the end, I held firm. “Mrs. Yorks, neither of us loves the other anymore. There’s no need to keep hurting each other.”Joel’s father sighed. Clearly understanding our family’s stance, he stopped Joel’s mother from further persuading us and instructed the housekeeper to bring out the engagement documents.I finally let out a breath of relief, watching the two copies of the engagement contract be torn apart, burned, and reduced to ashes.I made one last request. “Mr. and Mrs. Yorks, please don’t annou

“W-What did you just say?”Joel’s face went pale with disbelief.“When did this happen? Why didn’t you tell me?”I smiled, but my eyes were cold.“Does it matter? You should know very well the things you did while thinking I couldn’t hear.”Joel clenched his fists, standing there in a daze, unable to say a word.Jealousy flashed through Mandy’s eyes. She spoke up bluntly, pointing the finger at me:“Wow, Helen, I really couldn’t tell. You’re such a good actress. Everyone knows your hearing was permanently impaired. How could it possibly be cured so easily?”As she spoke, she put on an exaggerated look of surprise, widening her eyes.“Don’t tell me you thought that just because you’re no longer ‘disabled,’ Joel would like you again and treat you like a little princess? Tsk, tsk…I really didn’t expect you to be this scheming. Joel, you’d better not fall for it.”Joel’s eyes lit up. He immediately shook off his guilt, a smug smile reappearing on his lips.“Mandy’s right. Helen,
