Chapter 4

Penulis: Cloud Green
"Let go." I said sarcastically.

"I told you that day— If you walk out that door, don't ever come back.

"Patrick, there's a saying: love that arrives too late is worthless."

His face turned ugly. He said coldly, "Hannah, you'd better not regret this."

He left looking defeated. Travis rubbed my reddened wrist where Patrick had grabbed me and muttered, "What bad luck."

Word about what happened at the bar that night spread quickly. What I didn't expect was that Lily would actually have the nerve to come looking for me.

We arranged to meet at the cafe outside our old high school. I showed up on time.

After all these years, she looked much more polished than the poor, pale girl from high school who still had light in her eyes. She was prettier now, and clearly well-off.

The bag on the table was the latest Hermès, and every piece of clothing she wore was designer.

She smiled warmly at me. "You're still as beautiful as ever."

I sat down and said bluntly, "You, on the other hand, are nothing special. I'm disappointed."

I was telling the truth. Back then, she'd been this fragile but radiant girl who was determined to change her fate through education. She had this resilience about her.

After high school graduation, she left for the best university without a second thought. That kind of independence and grit was genuinely attractive, which is why she became the one who got away for Patrick.

Patrick used to say she had this wild, untamed energy, a vitality that was different from the pampered girls in our circle.

He said she was special.

What you can't have always seems the best. They'd developed feelings during their youth and then separated—it was that adolescent heartbreak.

So when they reunited, it was like a spark hitting dry kindling.

Lily smiled bitterly. "You know, I've always envied you. You're beautiful, your family's wealthy, everyone's nice to you, you never lack for anything."

I shot back, "So you stole Patrick."

"I didn't steal him." Lily protested defensively. "You two may have grown up together, but we fell for each other first."

I felt sick to my stomach. "You seduced him while I was his girlfriend."

"That's such an ugly way to put it." Her face went pale. "I know you still love him, but forcing something never ends well."

I flashed the expensive diamond ring on my finger. "My husband is charming and treats me wonderfully. I'm not going to pine over a piece of trash.

"I don't want to get involved in whatever's between you two. If you're so capable, get him to marry you."

I picked up my bag to leave, but Lily panicked and grabbed my hand. "I can't live without him."

"Not my problem."

Her eyes reddened. ”You're as formidable as ever. Because you've distanced yourself from him, he can't stop thinking about you. He feels guilty about you."

I suspected she had serious mental issues—she was so calculating herself that she assumed everyone else was too.

"Ha, sounds like he's a glutton for punishment."

She suddenly stood up and dropped to her knees with a loud thud, grabbing at my pants and begging desperately, "It's my fault. I shouldn't have coveted what was yours. I shouldn't have fought you for Patrick.

"I just love him too much. I want to stay by his side forever. Please forgive me."

I was completely baffled by her over-the-top performance when Patrick, who'd apparently been watching from the doorway, strode over and pulled her up from the ground.

I walked past her without looking, but she called out, "Hannah Spencer.”"What is it?"Her smile looked worse than crying. "I schemed and plotted, but in the end I lost everything."I was suddenly a bit curious. I got a coffee and sat on a bench outside to listen to her quiet confession."I fell for him the moment I saw him. Someone that brilliant—it's hard not to be drawn in."I deliberately got close to him, showed him my stubborn and unique side, subtly winning his sympathy. After he was hooked, I pulled back to make him obsess over me."I was naive enough to think that if I worked hard enough, someday I'd be worthy of standing beside him. But it was impossible—I could never keep up with your world."That so-called reunion wasn't fate—I orchestrated it. Every time he abandoned you to be with me, I felt triumphant. I actually believed he truly loved me."So when I heard about your wedding, I fell apart. I couldn't lose him."She laughed bitterly at herself. "I thought I'd wo

"Tsk tsk..." my friend commented, "Getting shipped off overseas and cut off from the Luther family's inner circle—all for some woman. What a waste."I wasn't surprised by this outcome at all. I said calmly, "The Luther family's real heir apparent was always the eldest son."It's just that Patrick had always been the favorite, which gave people the wrong impression.During my four years as his secretary, I saw it all too clearly. It wasn't that he lacked ambition—he just was never a match for his low-key older brother. My friend couldn't help speculating, "Think he'll take Lily overseas with him?""If it's true love, of course he will.""I bet he won't." My friend shook her head. "Their so-called love can't survive this kind of upheaval."I shrugged. "Who knows..."Before Patrick left, he asked to meet. I flatly refused. He blocked my car on my way home from work. My driver looked at the man standing in front of our vehicle and asked uncertainly, "Ms. Spencer, should we get out

I looked at her stomach and said coldly, "Instead of worrying about my business, maybe focus on that poor child who'll be born illegitimate and unwanted."Lily finally couldn't take it anymore and fled through the crowd of whispers.I stared Patrick down and enunciated each word clearly, "Listen carefully—I stopped loving you long ago. Keep your woman in line and stop dragging me into your mess.""And thanks for leaving me—the best thing you ever did for me."Patrick's face changed as he pressed a hand to his chest and stepped back.I walked away with Travis, and this time I was the one who wouldn't look back. After the party, whether from spite or sheer greed, Patrick began aggressively targeting Spencer Industries.I was barely keeping up, but eventually I used the network and relationships I'd built during my years at his company to poach several of his biggest clients.During those four years working for him, I'd drunk myself into stomach ulcers, traveled to three countries

At that time, I was accompanying him on a business trip to South City. I caught the flu and had a high fever that wouldn't break. But when Lily called, he abandoned me there and flew to her side overnight.Travis suddenly showed up at my hotel. He pretended to be reluctant but took care of me anyway. Our relationship suddenly grew closer, and that's when I realized how he felt about me.A week later, when I was feeling better, I saw Lily's not-so-subtle social media posts rubbing her relationship in my face. She never mentioned Patrick by name, but every word was designed to remind me how loving and happy they were while I was sick and miserable.I got drunk that night. Travis was frustrated with me. "You could have any man you want with a snap of your fingers.""Even you?"Two adults, taking what they needed from each other. After that night, I called Patrick to break up with him. He thought I was just throwing a tantrum and didn't take it seriously. We had a cold war for two

Lily clenched her fists and looked at me with a complex expression. "I hope you won't see Patrick anymore. I want to give our baby a complete family."It was an unreasonable demand, and I naturally wouldn't indulge her. "The Spencer and Luther families have been close for generations. We move in the same circles, and we're bound to cross paths in business. Why should I go out of my way to avoid him?"You need to understand something—you two are the ones who wronged me. I don't owe you anything."She was just another pitiful woman. I looked at her with pity. Even without my interference, her life probably wouldn't be easy. The Luther family wasn't so easily manipulated. If she thought a baby would guarantee her a place in the family, she was in for a rude awakening. After that day, I blocked both of their numbers.......News about them still reached my ears from time to time. Word of Lily's pregnancy quickly got back to the Luther family.Mrs. Luther showed up at her door with

"Don't kneel to her. You've done nothing wrong."Watching their little performance, I laughed coldly. "It takes two to tango. The real villain here is you—a two-timing bastard who wants it all.”Patrick shielded her behind him, his expression unreadable as he said accusingly, "Hannah, you chose to love me."I scoffed mockingly. "When I was young and naive, yes, I liked you. But I was never obsessed with you. If you'd been honest from the start, do you think I would have thrown myself at you?"All these years, you enjoyed my affection and pursuit, constantly giving me hope, leading me on, dropping hints."Patrick, don't take me for a fool. You're the one who's been playing games all along."Having his masks and schemes exposed, embarrassment flashed in his eyes."We were always meant to have an arranged marriage anyway."Well, congratulations—you're free now. I'm married to Travis now.”Patrick grabbed my hand desperately. "Let's talk this through."Lily clutched her stomach p
