Chapter 4

Autor: Dark Caramel
After five years apart, Julia looked nothing like the timid, dependent girl she used to be.

There was a softness to her now, the kind that came from being loved and taken care of. She still looked delicate, the kind that made you want to protect her.

I stared at her, my eyes burning and my whole body trembling with rage.

She took everything from me without effort, while Tess and I were tortured for five whole years.

Hanson and the others would never know.

What they called "learning manners" meant getting beaten by the staff, getting strapped to a chair and shocked, or being hung up and whipped until you stopped resisting.

They kept doing it until you learned to obey, until you stopped feeling anything at all, and until you became nothing but a puppet that followed orders.

At the beginning, I fought back. I screamed and told them who I was.

I told them I was the Wells family's heiress, that my family and my husband would never let this go.

But they used Tess against me.

The moment I showed even the slightest resistance, everything meant for me would be done to her instead.

So for Tess's sake, I gave in.

When they beat me, I curled up and didn't fight back.

When they threw food at me, I got on the floor and forced myself to swallow it.

When they tore my clothes and dragged me into a dark room, I had no choice but to endure it.

At first, I kept hoping my family and Hanson would come for me, that they'd find out what was happening, punish those people, and take us home.

But every time I woke up after another round of humiliation, the hope faded a little more, until there was nothing left.

The only time I felt like I was still alive was when I held Tess.

I thought about ending it more times than I could count.

But for her, I held on.

I dragged myself through five years.

Until three days ago, when Tess got her first period.

The way those people looked at her changed.

"It'd been five years. I'm already bored of the mom."

"She's only ten, but I've never had one this young."

"I wonder what a rich girl's kid feels like…"

The cold spread through me, all the way to my bones.

I couldn't let her go through what I did.

So I finally tried to run.

That night, I carried Tess and climbed over the wall. Even when I broke my leg on the way down, I didn't stop.

The people from the school caught on fast. I could hear them getting closer behind us.

I staggered to the edge of a cliff. There was nowhere left to go.

So I jumped.

I wasn't going to take her back to that place.

I knew I would die, but I never expected Tess to live.

I still don't know if that's a blessing or a curse.

"Julia, didn't we tell you to wait at the hotel?"

The moment Julia appeared, my mother hurried over to her.

My father and Edward followed, nodding in agreement.

"Melody never changes. I can't believe she ruined your wedding!"

The same family that once loved me now stood there, caring for the woman who practically caused my death.

It almost made me laugh.

"I was just worried," Julia said softly. "Is Melody still mad at me? Maybe we should call off the wedding. I don't want to upset her…"

Hanson didn't react.

She stepped closer and slipped her arm around his, but he moved away without making it obvious.

"Don't worry. I'll make it up to you," he said, his voice flat. "You're still in your wedding dress. You shouldn't stay. Go back."

For a second, something flashed in Julia's eyes. Then she turned to Tess.

"You must be Tess. You've grown so much." She glanced around. "Where's your mom? I don't see her."

Her gaze swept the room, as if she were afraid I might suddenly appear.

"Don't worry about that shameless woman," my mother said sharply. "She's not worth your concern."

Hanson frowned slightly, like he was about to say something.

Amelia's radio crackled.

"Captain, we got a report. A woman's body was recovered from the water near where the girl was found…"

Hanson's words seemed to push Julia over the edge. She burst out laughing, wild and sharp."Hanson, stop pretending you're so devoted. You say you loved her? If you did, how could you be stupid enough not to see I was setting her up?"I barely had to try, and you believed she was sleeping around and even had someone else's child behind your back."You're just as stupid as the rest of the Wells family!"She screamed at him, every word cutting deep.Hanson didn't flinch."You're right. I was stupid. I let my anger take over. All I could think about was being betrayed by the person I loved most. There wasn't room for anything else. That's why you got your chance."He paused, his voice steady."But it doesn't matter now. Once Tess is strong enough to stand on her own, I'll apologize to Melody myself."After that, he had Julia locked inside an iron cage. There were already people inside. Some were missing arms or legs. Others couldn't see or hear.I recognized them. They were t

Another hour passed before the new DNA results came in.Amelia handed the report to Hanson with a faint edge of sarcasm in her voice. "Mr. Rowse, you should take a good look at this. I really don't get it. Tess has your exact eyes. How did all of you convince yourselves she wasn't yours?"Hanson just stared at the paper in his hands."Biological parent-child relationship confirmed. Accuracy: 99.9%."The words seemed to stab straight into him. A metallic taste rose in his throat. He suddenly coughed up blood, staining the report in his hands."Julia…!"He said her name slowly, each syllable forced out through clenched teeth, his eyes burning red.It all came rushing back.Every detail from that day, every moment had her hand in it.But back then, the second he saw me lying there with other men, anger took over. He never even stopped to think before deciding I was guilty. Now, looking back, he realized nothing about it made sense."H-Hanson… Are you saying…that this has some

My mother let out a sharp, broken scream."Melody! Darling!"My father stared at my ruined body, his face drained of all color. His mouth opened like he wanted to say something, but nothing came out. He just stood there, frozen.Edward looked like he was falling apart. He shook his head over and over, refusing to accept what was right in front of him.Watching them like this, something inside me loosened. All that bitterness I had been carrying finally cracked."No… That's not my sister. Melody's still alive," Edward muttered, as if he was trying to convince himself.Suddenly, his eyes lit up."Julia said she's at the reform school. That body can't be Melody. I want a DNA test!"His voice shook as he yanked out a strand of his own hair and shoved it at the officer. At Amelia's signal, the officer took it, then carefully collected a sample from my body and sent it off. An hour later, the officer came back. Before he could even speak, Edward grabbed the report out of his hands.

That protective charm was a gift from Hanson. He never used to believe in any of that. Spirits, blessings, luck. He thought it was all nonsense. But when I was 18, I got sick.In just three days, the hospital told my family eight times that I might not make it. Every doctor they brought in shook their heads. No one knew what to do.Someone told Hanson about a cathedral up in the mountains, saying it was known for miracles. He went overnight and stayed there on his knees, praying for a full day and night. In the end, the head priest gave him a blessed charm. Hanson rushed back with it and put it on me himself, like it was something sacred. After that, I started getting better. No one could explain it.From then on, he believed. He made me wear the charm at all times. Said it would keep me safe. And now, it sat in a plastic bag, soaked through, turned into evidence."Where did you find this?" Hanson grabbed the officer by the arm, his eyes bloodshot."On the body we just reco

The voice over the radio came through, loud and clear.Hanson froze where he stood, his face going pale.My mother swayed a little, then she clutched my father's arm. "Could it be Melody…"My father patted her hand, forcing calm into his voice. "Don't jump to conclusions. There's no way it's her.""Exactly," Edward cut in, his voice suddenly louder, a hint of panic creeping through. "She's probably in some guy's bed right now. There's no way that body's hers."I hovered above them, watching, my chest tight with something I couldn't name."You'll know whether it's her once you identify the body," Amelia said, frowning."Actually, the school called me just now," Julia spoke up all of a sudden, letting out a soft sigh. "They said they found Melody. She was at a bar."She shook her head lightly. "I can't believe after five years, she still hasn't changed. She even threw her own daughter into the ocean and ran off to drink."Lies!Every word out of her mouth was a lie.I rushed
