Cassian stared at the guard.“That’s impossible,” he said hoarsely. “We made plans. Her birthday is today. Why would she jump into the lake?”“According to the captain, Lady Seraphina boarded the yacht alone,” the guard replied. “She waited for you all night. Just before sunrise, she left her phone and cloak on the deck, then stepped over the railing.”“No.” Cassian’s voice rose. “Why didn’t anyone call me?”“We did, many times. But your phone was switched off.”Cassian pulled out the phone. The screen had gone black.He then turned to Evelyne. “Did you turn it off?”Evelyne stiffened.“Of course not. You must have done it by accident, or perhaps the battery died.” Her eyes filled with hurt. “Cassian, you can’t possibly blame me for this.”He said nothing. Then he strode out of the room.By the time Cassian reached Moonmere Lake, the yacht had returned to the marina.Royal guards surrounded the dock while priests from the Moon Temple examined the silver light lingering above the water.
