Chapter 2

Author: Cutie Kitty
Julian and I once had a five-year-old daughter of our own.

One day, while I was away on a business trip, she came down with a fever. I couldn't get home right away, so I called Julian and made him promise he'd stay with her and take care of her.

He promised he would.

Instead, he left her home alone so he could attend a business dinner. For three hours, no one was there while her condition worsened.

By the time I made it home, our daughter was gone.

Julian and I had the worst fight of our marriage that night. I thought there was no possible way I could ever forgive him.

But later, he dropped to his knees in front of me, crying and begging for forgiveness. And in the end, I gave it to him.

Years ago, Julian had saved my life. I told myself I owed him for that. I let that debt outweigh everything else, even something I should never have been able to forgive.

I was a fool back then, and I wouldn't be one again.

With that thought, I walked out of the venue.

For once, I didn't stay behind to clean up Julian's mess.

I took a cab home, planning to clean the cuts and bandage them myself. But the moment I stepped through the front door, I stopped.

Chloe and Daisy were sitting on my couch, laughing together as if they belonged there. And in Daisy's arms was the teddy bear my daughter had loved more than anything.

My eyes went straight to it, and Chloe noticed.

A satisfied smile tugged at her lips as she looked up at me. "Claire, you're back! Daisy wanted to see your house, so Julian brought us over. He told us to make ourselves at home."

As if that weren't enough, she picked up the designs I'd given her earlier and casually flipped through them in front of me.

"I heard these designs mean a lot to you." She glanced down at the necklace around Daisy's neck. "And apparently you designed this necklace especially for your daughter? All I had to do was ask, and Julian gave us both.

"You still don't get it, do you, Claire? If I want something of yours, sooner or later, Julian will give it to me. So, save yourself the humiliation and leave while you still have some dignity. Because eventually, he's going to leave you anyway."

In the past, Chloe's little performance would have gotten exactly the reaction she wanted. I would've been furious.

This time, I barely spared her a glance before turning toward the stairs. I had cuts that still needed cleaning, and I had absolutely no interest in wasting my time on whatever game she was trying to play.

Chloe, however, wasn't about to let me walk away. She stepped in front of me, blocking my path.

Before I could react, she yanked the necklace from Daisy's neck and slapped her.

Daisy immediately burst into tears, frightened by the sudden blow.

Chloe swept the girl into her arms and raised her voice, making sure anyone else in the house would hear. "Claire, I know you're angry with me about what happened at the press conference, but take it out on me! Daisy didn't do anything. She's just a little girl!"

I almost laughed. This was Chloe's favorite trick, and by now, I knew exactly how it worked.

Sure enough, seconds later, Julian came rushing into the room.

His eyes landed on Daisy's tear-streaked face, and his expression darkened. He crossed the room without even asking what had happened and slapped me across the face.

"Claire, what is wrong with you? She's a child. She had nothing to do with any of this. Daisy is Chloe's niece. What happened at the press conference was just a joke. They were trying to lighten the mood for me. Did you really have to take it this far over something so stupid?"

It was almost impressive. Chloe's performance couldn't have been more obvious, yet Julian fell for it every single time.

Once, watching him defend her like this would've torn me apart. I would have been furious, jealous, desperate to understand why my husband always seemed to choose another woman over me.

But now, I felt nothing. Whatever Julian did for Chloe no longer had anything to do with me.

Without bothering to defend myself, I bent down and picked up the broken necklace. Then I placed it in Chloe's hands with a faint smile.

"Why would I be upset? You were only trying to help Julian out and keep things entertaining. If anything, I should be thanking you. In fact, I already booked a table at a five-star restaurant. Consider dinner my way of saying thanks."

I pulled out my phone and brought up a reservation. I'd originally made the reservation for Julian and me. It was supposed to be our private celebration after he finally announced to the world that I was his wife.

Clearly, there was nothing left to celebrate.

Julian looked at the reservation on my screen and fell silent. For the first time, a hint of awkwardness crossed his face.

"I'll pay you back for dinner."

"No need." I waved him off.

Apparently, my lack of protest pleased him. Some of the coldness disappeared from his voice. "You're finally learning not to make such a big deal out of everything. Don't worry. I'll make it up to you for what happened today. We'll announce the marriage another time."

Sebastian Grant was my boss. He'd taken an interest in my work from the day I joined Meridian Group, and unlike Julian, he'd never been shy about telling me when he thought I'd done something well. But somewhere along the way, his attention stopped being purely professional. When he found out I was moving into a new apartment alone, he showed up and spent half the day helping me carry boxes. When I came down with a fever, he was the first person to notice something was wrong. He brought me medicine, drove me to the hospital, and stayed to make sure I was alright. He brought me meals while I recovered and insisted on driving me to and from work until I was back on my feet.At work, he became the kind of mentor I'd never had. When I did well, he said so. When I made a mistake, he didn't sugarcoat it either. He'd point out where I'd gone wrong, then sit down with me and show me how to fix it.It was only during those six months with Sebastian that I finally understood what it was li

"I'll fire Chloe today," Julian blurted out. "Right now. And from now on, I won't even hire a female assistant."Before I could respond, he pulled out his phone, found Chloe's contact, and blocked her right in front of me. Then he deleted her number for good measure."See? She's gone." He held up his hand as if making a solemn vow. "I promise I'll never speak to her again. Is that enough? Can you forgive me now?"I almost laughed. So, he did know. All those years, Julian had known exactly what bothered me. He'd known exactly how much his relationship with Chloe hurt me.He simply hadn't cared enough to stop.It wasn't that he hadn't realized I would be jealous or upset. He'd just been so certain that I would forgive him no matter what he did that he'd never seen a reason to change. He'd flaunted his closeness with Chloe right in front of me, enjoying her attention while taking my devotion for granted. There had been countless chances for him to draw a line with her. "This piece is called 'Sweetest Thing'," I told the audience. "I designed it for my daughter, Candice, who passed away."Her name always made me think of everything sweet in life. So, wherever she is now, I hope her next life is filled with all the happiness, love, and joy she deserved."And I hope every woman who wears this necklace finds a little of that happiness for herself."The room erupted into applause. As I stepped off the stage, however, I caught sight of someone in the crowd I never expected to see.Julian.He was standing among the guests, applauding with everyone else.I almost didn't recognize him.Six months had changed him completely. His face was gaunt, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and several days' worth of stubble covered his jaw. Even his suit was rumpled, a far cry from the impeccably dressed Julian Winslow I remembered.Apparently, the past six months hadn't been nearly as kind to him as they had been to me.The moment I stepped off the stage, Julian

Julian's frown deepened. For a moment, something unreadable flickered across his face as he stared at me."You're really going to walk out on me?" he demanded. "Fine. Go ahead. The second you're gone, I'll marry Chloe."There was a time when seeing Julian have dinner with Chloe was enough to drive me crazy with jealousy. Now, I felt nothing. No anger. No hurt. Not even disappointment. I simply looked at him and smiled. "I wish you both a very happy marriage."With that, I collected the suitcase I'd left with reception and walked out of the building. I never looked back.Once I moved overseas, everything fell into place surprisingly quickly. I settled into my new job, built a new routine, and threw myself into my career. For the first time in years, my work wasn't about proving myself to Julian or cleaning up someone else's mess. It was mine. And I was good at it.My boss recognized that almost immediately. My designs brought in results, my projects consistently exceeded expe

Our daughter had waited five years. Julian never kept that promise. Not even before she died.I must have gone quiet for too long, because Julian seemed to take my silence as a sign that he'd finally gotten through to me. His expression softened slightly, though his voice remained cold."Well? What are you waiting for? Apologize to Chloe and get that prototype finished as soon as possible. Everyone else shouldn't have to pick up the slack because of you."A bitter laugh escaped me as I shoved him aside. "I don't work for you anymore. Find someone else to clean up your mess. Now move. I have a flight to catch."Julian froze. He caught my wrist before I could walk away. "A flight? Where are you going?"Before I could answer, my phone rang with a call from my new employer."Ms. Aldridge? This is Meridian Group. What time should we expect you today? We'd like to have a car waiting for you at the airport.""Three this afternoon. Thank you." Sometime during the call, I accidentally

Julian froze, frowning in confusion. "What are you talking about…"The client hung up before he could finish.I smiled. "Mr. Winslow, don't tell me you've forgotten the contract you signed. There's an entire clause requiring us to submit the latest prototype by the agreed deadline."Julian's lips pressed into a thin line.Chloe glanced at me from the corner of her eye and immediately seized the opportunity. "Claire, weren't you in charge of the prototype?"I know you're still upset about what happened yesterday, but you can't let your personal feelings interfere with your work. If the company breaches the contract, everyone pays the price. It's not fair to punish the entire team just because you're angry."Her little performance worked like a charm. One by one, my coworkers turned on me, their faces filled with contempt."Come on, Ms. Aldridge. You can't seriously be this selfish. What about the rest of us?""Exactly. If this deal falls through, we're screwed too!"Julian didn
