Chapter 3

Author: Cutie Kitty
What Julian didn't understand was that my sudden willingness to let things go wasn't weakness. And it certainly wasn't maturity.

I'd simply stopped loving him.

This time, I wasn't going to wait around for Julian to leave me. I was leaving first.

Not long after, Julian took Chloe and Daisy to the restaurant and left me alone at the house.

I went upstairs to take care of my injuries.

The moment I slipped off my heels, I winced. My ankle was badly swollen, and the backs of my feet were covered in blisters from the shoes. Several had already broken open.

I sat on the edge of the bed and started cleaning the scrapes. The antiseptic stung the second it touched my skin, and I sucked in a sharp breath.

God, that hurt.

I'd never even liked high heels. Julian did.

He especially liked seeing me in them, so somewhere along the way, I'd convinced myself that was reason enough to wear them. For years, I forced my feet into shoes I hated simply because my husband thought I looked good in them.

It didn't matter how much they pinched or how often I came home with blisters. Back then, I'd considered the discomfort a small price to pay for making him happy.

Looking back, I couldn't believe how much of myself I'd given up for him.

Once I'd finished tending to my injuries, I slipped my feet into a pair of soft, comfortable slippers. Then I picked up the heels and dropped them straight into the trash.

Slippers were much more my style.

For ten years, I'd shaped my life around Julian's preferences. I was done.

From now on, I wanted to find out what life looked like when I chose myself.

With that decision made, I picked up my phone and opened a message from a company that had been trying to recruit me for years.

I typed a single sentence. "I'm ready to accept your offer."

The reply came almost immediately. "Ms. Aldridge, you have no idea how long I've been waiting to hear that. Name your start date. We'll be ready for you."

The company was one of the biggest names in Ravenport, and its CEO had been trying to bring me on board for years.

He'd always respected my work and believed in my talent as a designer, offering me a salary and benefits generous enough that most people wouldn't have thought twice.

I'd turned him down every single time because Julian needed me.

In the early years, I'd been the one keeping much of his company afloat. I brought in clients, handled major accounts, and designed the collections that built its reputation.

I could have gone somewhere bigger. I could have built a career that belonged entirely to me. Instead, I'd chosen Julian.

I'd put my own future on hold and poured everything I had into making his company successful, never once resenting the sacrifice.

And once he'd gotten everything he needed from me, he pushed me aside as if I'd had nothing to do with getting him there.

Only then did I finally understand something I should have learned years ago.

Loving someone with everything you had didn't mean they would love you the same way in return.

After our daughter died, I'd forgiven Julian because he'd once saved my life. No matter how angry I was, some part of me had always believed I owed him for that.

But not anymore.

Whatever debt I'd once had to Julian had been paid a hundred times over. We were even.

I looked down at my phone and replied to the message. "I can start tomorrow."

Then I booked a seat on the earliest flight out the next morning and began packing.

It didn't take long. In fact, as I went through the bedroom, gathering everything that was actually mine, I realized something almost absurd.

After ten years of marriage, I didn't even own enough in this house to fill a single suitcase.

The closet was packed with Julian's tailored suits, dress shirts, and rows of expensive ties. My side held only a handful of dresses, most of them so old that the fabric had faded from years of washing.

There was only one thing I owned that was worth much at all. A gold bracelet Julian had given me years ago.

The design was dated now, something no one would look twice at in a jewelry store. But I'd always treasured it. He'd bought it for me with the money from his first real business deal.

I could still remember Julian in his 20s, smiling as he fastened the bracelet around my wrist, his eyes warm and impossibly gentle.

"I'll love you for the rest of my life," he'd promised.

Then he'd laughed and told me that once he made it big, he'd buy me so much jewelry I'd need an entire room just to keep it all.

I'd believed every word.

Years later, Julian had more money than the two of us could ever have imagined back then, but he never bought me another piece of jewelry worth keeping.

On our seventh anniversary, I'd finally worked up the nerve to ask Julian for a new jewelry set.

He'd gotten angry. He accused me of wasting money, called me irresponsible, and told me I had no idea how hard he'd worked for everything we had.

After that, he decided I needed to learn how to "control my spending".

He put me on a strict allowance. Anything over 200 dollars had to be submitted to the company's finance department for approval.

At some point, the man I'd fallen in love with had become a stranger. I just couldn't remember exactly when it had happened.

Or maybe I could. Maybe it had started when Chloe came into our lives.

After she appeared, Julian's attention had slowly shifted away from me until, one day, I realized there was almost nothing left.

With me, he scrutinized every purchase down to the last cent.

With Chloe, money was apparently no object.

Sebastian Grant was my boss. He'd taken an interest in my work from the day I joined Meridian Group, and unlike Julian, he'd never been shy about telling me when he thought I'd done something well. But somewhere along the way, his attention stopped being purely professional. When he found out I was moving into a new apartment alone, he showed up and spent half the day helping me carry boxes. When I came down with a fever, he was the first person to notice something was wrong. He brought me medicine, drove me to the hospital, and stayed to make sure I was alright. He brought me meals while I recovered and insisted on driving me to and from work until I was back on my feet.At work, he became the kind of mentor I'd never had. When I did well, he said so. When I made a mistake, he didn't sugarcoat it either. He'd point out where I'd gone wrong, then sit down with me and show me how to fix it.It was only during those six months with Sebastian that I finally understood what it was li

"I'll fire Chloe today," Julian blurted out. "Right now. And from now on, I won't even hire a female assistant."Before I could respond, he pulled out his phone, found Chloe's contact, and blocked her right in front of me. Then he deleted her number for good measure."See? She's gone." He held up his hand as if making a solemn vow. "I promise I'll never speak to her again. Is that enough? Can you forgive me now?"I almost laughed. So, he did know. All those years, Julian had known exactly what bothered me. He'd known exactly how much his relationship with Chloe hurt me.He simply hadn't cared enough to stop.It wasn't that he hadn't realized I would be jealous or upset. He'd just been so certain that I would forgive him no matter what he did that he'd never seen a reason to change. He'd flaunted his closeness with Chloe right in front of me, enjoying her attention while taking my devotion for granted. There had been countless chances for him to draw a line with her. "This piece is called 'Sweetest Thing'," I told the audience. "I designed it for my daughter, Candice, who passed away."Her name always made me think of everything sweet in life. So, wherever she is now, I hope her next life is filled with all the happiness, love, and joy she deserved."And I hope every woman who wears this necklace finds a little of that happiness for herself."The room erupted into applause. As I stepped off the stage, however, I caught sight of someone in the crowd I never expected to see.Julian.He was standing among the guests, applauding with everyone else.I almost didn't recognize him.Six months had changed him completely. His face was gaunt, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and several days' worth of stubble covered his jaw. Even his suit was rumpled, a far cry from the impeccably dressed Julian Winslow I remembered.Apparently, the past six months hadn't been nearly as kind to him as they had been to me.The moment I stepped off the stage, Julian

Julian's frown deepened. For a moment, something unreadable flickered across his face as he stared at me."You're really going to walk out on me?" he demanded. "Fine. Go ahead. The second you're gone, I'll marry Chloe."There was a time when seeing Julian have dinner with Chloe was enough to drive me crazy with jealousy. Now, I felt nothing. No anger. No hurt. Not even disappointment. I simply looked at him and smiled. "I wish you both a very happy marriage."With that, I collected the suitcase I'd left with reception and walked out of the building. I never looked back.Once I moved overseas, everything fell into place surprisingly quickly. I settled into my new job, built a new routine, and threw myself into my career. For the first time in years, my work wasn't about proving myself to Julian or cleaning up someone else's mess. It was mine. And I was good at it.My boss recognized that almost immediately. My designs brought in results, my projects consistently exceeded expe

Our daughter had waited five years. Julian never kept that promise. Not even before she died.I must have gone quiet for too long, because Julian seemed to take my silence as a sign that he'd finally gotten through to me. His expression softened slightly, though his voice remained cold."Well? What are you waiting for? Apologize to Chloe and get that prototype finished as soon as possible. Everyone else shouldn't have to pick up the slack because of you."A bitter laugh escaped me as I shoved him aside. "I don't work for you anymore. Find someone else to clean up your mess. Now move. I have a flight to catch."Julian froze. He caught my wrist before I could walk away. "A flight? Where are you going?"Before I could answer, my phone rang with a call from my new employer."Ms. Aldridge? This is Meridian Group. What time should we expect you today? We'd like to have a car waiting for you at the airport.""Three this afternoon. Thank you." Sometime during the call, I accidentally

Julian froze, frowning in confusion. "What are you talking about…"The client hung up before he could finish.I smiled. "Mr. Winslow, don't tell me you've forgotten the contract you signed. There's an entire clause requiring us to submit the latest prototype by the agreed deadline."Julian's lips pressed into a thin line.Chloe glanced at me from the corner of her eye and immediately seized the opportunity. "Claire, weren't you in charge of the prototype?"I know you're still upset about what happened yesterday, but you can't let your personal feelings interfere with your work. If the company breaches the contract, everyone pays the price. It's not fair to punish the entire team just because you're angry."Her little performance worked like a charm. One by one, my coworkers turned on me, their faces filled with contempt."Come on, Ms. Aldridge. You can't seriously be this selfish. What about the rest of us?""Exactly. If this deal falls through, we're screwed too!"Julian didn
