Chapter 6

Author: Cutie Kitty
I almost laughed.

Julian expected me to understand.

Funny. Where had all that empathy been when it was our own daughter who needed him?

The moment Julian and Chloe noticed me, their conversation stopped. The atmosphere turned awkward almost instantly.

A few coworkers quickly rushed in to fill the silence. They crowded around Julian and Chloe, effectively pushing me to the edge of the group as the teasing began.

"Chloe, you've been holding out on us! You and Mr. Winslow already have a daughter, and somehow nobody knew?"

"So, when are you two giving Daisy a little brother? You already make a pretty convincing family of three."

Chloe gave a soft laugh and glanced at Julian, looking almost bashful.

Julian didn't correct anyone. He simply stood there and let them tease the two of them as if there might actually be something between them.

I couldn't help remembering the last time I'd brought our daughter to the office.

She'd made the mistake of calling him "Daddy" in front of someone.

Julian had been furious. He punished her for it and told her that, at the office, no one could know she was his daughter.

Later, when rumors circulated that Julian and I might be involved, he'd fired the employees responsible for spreading them.

Back then, he'd gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure no one connected him to his own wife and child.

But now?

His employees were openly joking that Chloe was his wife and Daisy was his daughter, and he didn't say a word.

So much for keeping his personal life out of the office.

Apparently, the rules only applied when it came to us. What a hypocrite.

While I was thinking, Chloe sauntered over to me with a smug little smile. "Claire, you're just getting in? It's almost eleven. You've been with the company longer than almost anyone. Shouldn't you be setting an example?"

Julian's expression hardened. "She's right. What kind of attitude is this, Claire? If you don't want the job anymore, say so. Chloe can take your position. Frankly, she's more qualified for it than you are."

For a second, I wondered if I'd heard him correctly.

Then I almost laughed.

Julian knew better than anyone how much of the company's business depended on me. Chloe, meanwhile, could barely operate the office printer without asking someone for help.

And Julian was telling me she was more qualified to do my job?

Please. I knew what he was doing.

This wasn't about my work. He wanted to embarrass me in front of everyone, knock me down a few pegs, and wait for me to come crawling back to him.

Unfortunately for him, I had a flight to catch. I didn't have time for another round of their office politics.

That was enough.

"No need," I said coolly. "I already resigned. Chloe can have my position effective immediately."

For a split second, Chloe seemed caught off guard.

Then concern spread across her face so quickly it might have been rehearsed.

"Claire, don't make a decision like this just because you're upset. I mean, you're not exactly fresh out of college anymore. A position like yours isn't easy to come by at your age.

"If you walk away from this company, who knows where you'll end up? You might have trouble getting hired anywhere. Besides, the new collection is about to launch. After putting so much work into it, wouldn't it be a shame to leave now?"

That did exactly what she'd intended. Julian's face darkened further. "Don't waste your breath, Chloe. If she wants to leave, let her."

He turned to me. "Winslow Corp survived before you, and it'll survive without you. But I'm warning you. Once the new collection hits the market, the company is going to take off. Don't come back regretting your decision when you see what you walked away from."

Regret? I almost smiled.

We'd see who regretted what.

There was one small detail neither of them seemed to understand. I was the only person in the entire company who knew the proprietary process behind the new collection.

Without me, they couldn't even produce a finished prototype.

And Julian was dreaming about a product launch? Good luck with that.

I laughed. "I wouldn't count on making it that far."

Julian frowned. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Before I could answer, his phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID, and a smug smile immediately spread across his face. "Perfect timing. It's one of our biggest partners. They're probably calling about the launch. Once this deal goes through, there won't be a place for you to come crawling back to."

Then, apparently determined to rub my supposed mistake in my face, Julian put the call on speaker.

The voice that came through the phone wiped the smile straight off his face. "Mr. Winslow, where is the latest prototype? We were supposed to have it by now.

"If it's not delivered by the end of the day, you'll be in breach of contract. And according to the terms your company signed, that puts you on the hook for a 30-million-dollar penalty."

Sebastian Grant was my boss. He'd taken an interest in my work from the day I joined Meridian Group, and unlike Julian, he'd never been shy about telling me when he thought I'd done something well. But somewhere along the way, his attention stopped being purely professional. When he found out I was moving into a new apartment alone, he showed up and spent half the day helping me carry boxes. When I came down with a fever, he was the first person to notice something was wrong. He brought me medicine, drove me to the hospital, and stayed to make sure I was alright. He brought me meals while I recovered and insisted on driving me to and from work until I was back on my feet.At work, he became the kind of mentor I'd never had. When I did well, he said so. When I made a mistake, he didn't sugarcoat it either. He'd point out where I'd gone wrong, then sit down with me and show me how to fix it.It was only during those six months with Sebastian that I finally understood what it was li

"I'll fire Chloe today," Julian blurted out. "Right now. And from now on, I won't even hire a female assistant."Before I could respond, he pulled out his phone, found Chloe's contact, and blocked her right in front of me. Then he deleted her number for good measure."See? She's gone." He held up his hand as if making a solemn vow. "I promise I'll never speak to her again. Is that enough? Can you forgive me now?"I almost laughed. So, he did know. All those years, Julian had known exactly what bothered me. He'd known exactly how much his relationship with Chloe hurt me.He simply hadn't cared enough to stop.It wasn't that he hadn't realized I would be jealous or upset. He'd just been so certain that I would forgive him no matter what he did that he'd never seen a reason to change. He'd flaunted his closeness with Chloe right in front of me, enjoying her attention while taking my devotion for granted. There had been countless chances for him to draw a line with her. "This piece is called 'Sweetest Thing'," I told the audience. "I designed it for my daughter, Candice, who passed away."Her name always made me think of everything sweet in life. So, wherever she is now, I hope her next life is filled with all the happiness, love, and joy she deserved."And I hope every woman who wears this necklace finds a little of that happiness for herself."The room erupted into applause. As I stepped off the stage, however, I caught sight of someone in the crowd I never expected to see.Julian.He was standing among the guests, applauding with everyone else.I almost didn't recognize him.Six months had changed him completely. His face was gaunt, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and several days' worth of stubble covered his jaw. Even his suit was rumpled, a far cry from the impeccably dressed Julian Winslow I remembered.Apparently, the past six months hadn't been nearly as kind to him as they had been to me.The moment I stepped off the stage, Julian

Julian's frown deepened. For a moment, something unreadable flickered across his face as he stared at me."You're really going to walk out on me?" he demanded. "Fine. Go ahead. The second you're gone, I'll marry Chloe."There was a time when seeing Julian have dinner with Chloe was enough to drive me crazy with jealousy. Now, I felt nothing. No anger. No hurt. Not even disappointment. I simply looked at him and smiled. "I wish you both a very happy marriage."With that, I collected the suitcase I'd left with reception and walked out of the building. I never looked back.Once I moved overseas, everything fell into place surprisingly quickly. I settled into my new job, built a new routine, and threw myself into my career. For the first time in years, my work wasn't about proving myself to Julian or cleaning up someone else's mess. It was mine. And I was good at it.My boss recognized that almost immediately. My designs brought in results, my projects consistently exceeded expe

Our daughter had waited five years. Julian never kept that promise. Not even before she died.I must have gone quiet for too long, because Julian seemed to take my silence as a sign that he'd finally gotten through to me. His expression softened slightly, though his voice remained cold."Well? What are you waiting for? Apologize to Chloe and get that prototype finished as soon as possible. Everyone else shouldn't have to pick up the slack because of you."A bitter laugh escaped me as I shoved him aside. "I don't work for you anymore. Find someone else to clean up your mess. Now move. I have a flight to catch."Julian froze. He caught my wrist before I could walk away. "A flight? Where are you going?"Before I could answer, my phone rang with a call from my new employer."Ms. Aldridge? This is Meridian Group. What time should we expect you today? We'd like to have a car waiting for you at the airport.""Three this afternoon. Thank you." Sometime during the call, I accidentally

Julian froze, frowning in confusion. "What are you talking about…"The client hung up before he could finish.I smiled. "Mr. Winslow, don't tell me you've forgotten the contract you signed. There's an entire clause requiring us to submit the latest prototype by the agreed deadline."Julian's lips pressed into a thin line.Chloe glanced at me from the corner of her eye and immediately seized the opportunity. "Claire, weren't you in charge of the prototype?"I know you're still upset about what happened yesterday, but you can't let your personal feelings interfere with your work. If the company breaches the contract, everyone pays the price. It's not fair to punish the entire team just because you're angry."Her little performance worked like a charm. One by one, my coworkers turned on me, their faces filled with contempt."Come on, Ms. Aldridge. You can't seriously be this selfish. What about the rest of us?""Exactly. If this deal falls through, we're screwed too!"Julian didn
