Chapter 5

Author: Cutie Kitty
Julian stared at me, clearly caught off guard. Then he frowned. "Enough, Claire. I'm exhausted. Go run me a bath, will you? And wash this while you're at it."

He shrugged off his jacket and tossed it to me.

There were lipstick marks all over the collar, and the fabric reeked of Chloe's unmistakably strong perfume.

Gross.

A few months ago, he wouldn't even have needed to ask. I would've gotten out of bed, run his bath, washed his clothes, and made sure everything was ready for him before he went to sleep.

Now, all I could think was how exhausting he was. I tossed the jacket straight back at him. "You have arms. Do it yourself."

Julian was genuinely stunned. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small jewelry box, and tossed it to me.

"I know you're still upset about what happened today. Here."

I opened the box to see a pair of silver earrings.

For a second, I could only stare. Julian had apparently forgotten that silver irritated my skin.

He'd also forgotten something even more basic. My ears weren't even pierced.

But the funniest part was, I'd seen those earrings before. Chloe had posted them on Instagram not long ago.

They were a pair she didn't even want.

I gave a humorless laugh and dropped the earrings straight into the trash. "If Chloe didn't want them, neither do I."

That was apparently the last straw. Julian's expression darkened. "Have I been too easy on you, Claire?"

A wave of exhaustion hit me, and I stifled a yawn. "I'm tired. If that's all you wanted, I'd like to go back to sleep."

My complete lack of reaction only seemed to make him angrier.

"Fine." Julian clenched his jaw. "You want me gone? I'm leaving. Just don't come crying to me when you regret it."

He turned toward the door.

"Wait."

Julian stopped. Slowly, the corner of his mouth lifted. The look on his face said it all. He thought I'd cracked.

He thought this entire night had been some elaborate attempt to get his attention, and now that he was actually walking away, I was finally going to beg him to stay.

Instead, I opened the nightstand drawer, pulled out a document and a pen, and held them out to him. "Sign this."

The hint of satisfaction vanished from Julian's face. "You stopped me for some stupid contract?"

I gave him a faint, mocking smile. "You might want to read it before you embarrass yourself."

Julian glanced down. The moment he saw the words at the top of the page, he froze. Then the pen snapped between his fingers.

"Divorce papers? You want a divorce?" Julian stared at me, his eyes narrowing. "Claire, enough. I know you're jealous of Chloe, but this is getting ridiculous."

"I'm not jealous. And I'm not bluffing. I want a divorce." My voice was calm.

For several seconds, Julian simply stared at me. Then he slammed the papers onto the nightstand. "I'm not signing them."

"That's your choice." I pulled the covers back over myself. "But you're not going to keep me married to you forever. It might make things take longer, but one way or another, this marriage is ending."

Julian clearly had no comeback. He clenched his jaw, let out an angry scoff, and stormed out of the room, making a point of stomping down the hallway as loudly as possible.

I knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted me to follow him.

In the past, the second Julian got angry, I would panic. I'd chase after him, apologize whether I'd done anything wrong or not, and keep trying to make things right until he finally forgave me.

Tonight? He could sulk all he wanted. I had more important things to do. Like sleep.

His footsteps lingered outside for a while before finally fading into the distance. I closed my eyes and, within minutes, fell into a deep sleep.

The next morning, I woke naturally for the first time in what felt like forever. Unsurprisingly, Julian hadn't come home. Apparently, I'd really gotten under his skin last night.

I couldn't bring myself to care.

After breakfast, I took a cab to the office and handed my resignation to HR.

Once that was done, I pulled out my phone and sent a message to one of our business partners.

When those partnerships had first been negotiated, the clients had agreed on one condition. I had to personally oversee their accounts.

Now that I was leaving the company, it was only professional to let them know I wouldn't be their point of contact anymore.

Once I'd sent the message, I headed for the exit.

I had barely stepped out when I ran into Julian and Chloe.

So, that was where he'd spent the night.

The two of them were walking close together, laughing about something as they approached. Neither seemed to notice me at first.

"Jules, thank you again for helping with Daisy last night," Chloe said sweetly. "I know she can be a handful. She lost both her parents when she was little, and I just feel so awful for her.

"All she's ever wanted is to know what it's like to have a dad. That's the only reason I asked you to play along and let her call you Daddy. Claire won't mind, would she?"

Julian scoffed. "Why would she? She's a mother herself. If anyone should be able to understand what that little girl is missing, it's Claire."

Sebastian Grant was my boss. He'd taken an interest in my work from the day I joined Meridian Group, and unlike Julian, he'd never been shy about telling me when he thought I'd done something well. But somewhere along the way, his attention stopped being purely professional. When he found out I was moving into a new apartment alone, he showed up and spent half the day helping me carry boxes. When I came down with a fever, he was the first person to notice something was wrong. He brought me medicine, drove me to the hospital, and stayed to make sure I was alright. He brought me meals while I recovered and insisted on driving me to and from work until I was back on my feet.At work, he became the kind of mentor I'd never had. When I did well, he said so. When I made a mistake, he didn't sugarcoat it either. He'd point out where I'd gone wrong, then sit down with me and show me how to fix it.It was only during those six months with Sebastian that I finally understood what it was li

"I'll fire Chloe today," Julian blurted out. "Right now. And from now on, I won't even hire a female assistant."Before I could respond, he pulled out his phone, found Chloe's contact, and blocked her right in front of me. Then he deleted her number for good measure."See? She's gone." He held up his hand as if making a solemn vow. "I promise I'll never speak to her again. Is that enough? Can you forgive me now?"I almost laughed. So, he did know. All those years, Julian had known exactly what bothered me. He'd known exactly how much his relationship with Chloe hurt me.He simply hadn't cared enough to stop.It wasn't that he hadn't realized I would be jealous or upset. He'd just been so certain that I would forgive him no matter what he did that he'd never seen a reason to change. He'd flaunted his closeness with Chloe right in front of me, enjoying her attention while taking my devotion for granted. There had been countless chances for him to draw a line with her. "This piece is called 'Sweetest Thing'," I told the audience. "I designed it for my daughter, Candice, who passed away."Her name always made me think of everything sweet in life. So, wherever she is now, I hope her next life is filled with all the happiness, love, and joy she deserved."And I hope every woman who wears this necklace finds a little of that happiness for herself."The room erupted into applause. As I stepped off the stage, however, I caught sight of someone in the crowd I never expected to see.Julian.He was standing among the guests, applauding with everyone else.I almost didn't recognize him.Six months had changed him completely. His face was gaunt, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and several days' worth of stubble covered his jaw. Even his suit was rumpled, a far cry from the impeccably dressed Julian Winslow I remembered.Apparently, the past six months hadn't been nearly as kind to him as they had been to me.The moment I stepped off the stage, Julian

Julian's frown deepened. For a moment, something unreadable flickered across his face as he stared at me."You're really going to walk out on me?" he demanded. "Fine. Go ahead. The second you're gone, I'll marry Chloe."There was a time when seeing Julian have dinner with Chloe was enough to drive me crazy with jealousy. Now, I felt nothing. No anger. No hurt. Not even disappointment. I simply looked at him and smiled. "I wish you both a very happy marriage."With that, I collected the suitcase I'd left with reception and walked out of the building. I never looked back.Once I moved overseas, everything fell into place surprisingly quickly. I settled into my new job, built a new routine, and threw myself into my career. For the first time in years, my work wasn't about proving myself to Julian or cleaning up someone else's mess. It was mine. And I was good at it.My boss recognized that almost immediately. My designs brought in results, my projects consistently exceeded expe

Our daughter had waited five years. Julian never kept that promise. Not even before she died.I must have gone quiet for too long, because Julian seemed to take my silence as a sign that he'd finally gotten through to me. His expression softened slightly, though his voice remained cold."Well? What are you waiting for? Apologize to Chloe and get that prototype finished as soon as possible. Everyone else shouldn't have to pick up the slack because of you."A bitter laugh escaped me as I shoved him aside. "I don't work for you anymore. Find someone else to clean up your mess. Now move. I have a flight to catch."Julian froze. He caught my wrist before I could walk away. "A flight? Where are you going?"Before I could answer, my phone rang with a call from my new employer."Ms. Aldridge? This is Meridian Group. What time should we expect you today? We'd like to have a car waiting for you at the airport.""Three this afternoon. Thank you." Sometime during the call, I accidentally

Julian froze, frowning in confusion. "What are you talking about…"The client hung up before he could finish.I smiled. "Mr. Winslow, don't tell me you've forgotten the contract you signed. There's an entire clause requiring us to submit the latest prototype by the agreed deadline."Julian's lips pressed into a thin line.Chloe glanced at me from the corner of her eye and immediately seized the opportunity. "Claire, weren't you in charge of the prototype?"I know you're still upset about what happened yesterday, but you can't let your personal feelings interfere with your work. If the company breaches the contract, everyone pays the price. It's not fair to punish the entire team just because you're angry."Her little performance worked like a charm. One by one, my coworkers turned on me, their faces filled with contempt."Come on, Ms. Aldridge. You can't seriously be this selfish. What about the rest of us?""Exactly. If this deal falls through, we're screwed too!"Julian didn
