Chapter 1 Giving Her Back

Penulis: Oliver Knox
Tristan pulled me out of the hospital room, his expression sharp with disbelief. "Why did you lie to her?"

"Because I know you're the one she loves," I answered evenly. He hesitated, clearly conflicted. So, I added, "Don't worry. We haven't registered our marriage."

Hearing that, he pressed on, "You stayed with her through thick and thin for seven years. You're really willing to give her up to me?"

I nodded, steady and unruffled. "There's nothing to be unwilling about."

In fact, I should have been thanking him.

The moment Naomi had been thrown into the air by the car, something had flashed through my mind—fragments of a future that had not happened yet.

I saw Naomi and Tristan trapped in endless arguments. Even after losing her memory, she still loved him somewhere deep in her subconscious. And when her memories returned, she would finally realize that the one she truly loved was Tristan.

To make it up to him, she would personally send me—the obstacle standing in the way of their reunion—into a psychiatric hospital. In the end, I would die in a strange fire, leaving nothing behind.

After seeing how it all ended, I suddenly had no desire to keep entangling myself any further.

A flicker of barely concealed elation flashed across Tristan's eyes, though he quickly suppressed the curve of his lips. Biting down on them, he put on a reluctant expression. "Naomi has amnesia right now. She does need someone to take care of her. Since you insist, I'll look after her for now. But if she regains her memory and blames me—"

"I'll deal with the consequences," I cut him off. "It has nothing to do with you."

Only then did Tristan finally relax. He straightened his collar and turned back toward the hospital room.

I followed behind him, the payment receipt still in my hand. Watching him walk toward Naomi, I felt no bitterness at all, only a strange lightness, like setting down a burden that had weighed on me for years.

On the hospital bed, Naomi lay with thick bandages wrapped around her head. The moment Tristan walked in, her eyes lit up.

That kind of look could not be faked. Even if her mind had forgotten, her heart still chose for her. Just like in the split second of the accident when she had instinctively shielded Tristan.

And me? I had been sitting in the back seat, watching the airbags deploy, watching her collapse into his arms, covered in blood.

I should have understood it then. Seven years of devotion could not compare to a single tear from her childhood sweetheart.

"Honey?" Naomi called out tentatively, her gaze locked tightly onto Tristan.

He froze, instinctively turning back to look at me. My face remained blank. I even gave him a slight nod, mouthing two silent words, "Answer her."

Tristan took a deep breath. In an instant, his face softened into a look full of tenderness and concern. He strode over and took Naomi's hand. "I'm here, Naomi. I'm right here."

She let out a breath of relief and tightened her grip around his hand. "You scared me. I thought I lost you. My head hurts so much… Did I sleep for a long time?"

Watching the two of them fall so naturally into each other's world, I felt like an unwanted presence.

Back when Naomi had even the slightest headache or fever, I stayed by her bedside day and night—feeding her, giving her medicine, wiping her down, massaging her.

She had taken it all for granted.

Now, her entire world was filled with another man.

"Ms. Alder."

I spoke in a strictly professional tone, breaking the intimate atmosphere.

Naomi turned to look at me, her brows knitting slightly. "You seem… familiar. You are…"

Tristan suddenly panicked, his gaze darting toward me.

Three days later, Alder Co.'s stock hit the daily limit down. The old men on the board could no longer sit still. They bombarded Naomi with calls one after another. As for me, I simply turned off my phone and flew to an island for a vacation.By the time I returned—after a full week of sun and sea—I had barely stepped out of the airport when Naomi stopped me.In just one week, she looked like she had aged a decade. Her face was drawn and lifeless, her eyes sunken, her expensive tailored suit wrinkled and hanging loosely on her frame. She reeked faintly of cigarettes and alcohol. As I pushed my suitcase out, Celine reached over to take my bag from me.When Naomi saw that, the dullness in her eyes shattered, turning red almost instantly as she lunged forward. "Don't touch him!"Celine raised a hand and blocked the incoming blow with ease, her expression calm. "Ms. Alder, have some self-respect."Naomi stared at me, her voice hoarse, like she had swallowed sand. "Connor, are you re

Naomi was rushed to the hospital again. The same room. The same bed. Only this time, she was carried in unconscious. The doctor said it was a mild concussion, combined with the relapse of a previous head injury. It could lead to memory confusion. Whether she would wake up, and when, remained uncertain.Tristan had been taken away by the police, suspected of stealing commercial secrets and causing intentional harm. Even though the attempt had failed, the charges were serious enough.I stayed at the hospital through the night. Not to take care of her, but to confirm her condition the moment she woke.…Early the next morning, sunlight filtered through the curtains and fell across the hospital bed.Naomi's fingers twitched. Then, slowly, she opened her eyes. She stared at the ceiling for a long time before turning her head, her gaze landing on me where I sat on the sofa.I looked back at her.For a moment, neither of us spoke. The air seemed to freeze between us."You're awake,

After that night, Naomi did not come to the office for several days. I heard she was down with a fever. Whether it was from anger or from standing in the cold wind that night, no one seemed to know.Tristan, on the other hand, showed up every day. But he had clearly learned his lesson. Whenever he saw me, he immediately took a detour, no longer daring to provoke me.That day, as I passed by Naomi's office, I noticed the door was slightly ajar. Just as I reached it, I heard the sound of someone rummaging through things inside.Through the narrow gap, I saw Tristan crouched in front of the safe. He held a miniature camera, snapping photos of a document in a frantic rush. His hands trembled, his face a mix of tension and greed."What are you doing?"A sharp shout came from behind me.Naomi strode over, clearly intending to confront me, only to catch sight of Tristan's furtive actions inside.Startled, Tristan dropped the camera with a clatter. He scrambled to his feet, trying to hi

I had already been on guard, so I sidestepped in time, and the wine missed me completely. But most of it splashed across Celine's white evening gown. A few stray drops even landed on the hem of a nearby socialite's dress.Celine's expression darkened, but she maintained her composure and did not make a scene. However, the same couldn't be said for the other woman."Who brought this barbarian here? So uncivilized! Security, get him out!"Tristan panicked completely. Holding the empty glass, his face drained of color as he looked helplessly at Naomi. "Naomi… I-I didn't mean to… He dodged! Otherwise, it wouldn't have hit anyone else!"The logic was almost impressive in its absurdity.By then, Naomi had already walked over, her expression beyond grim. Yet, instead of comforting Tristan or apologizing to Celine, she fixed her gaze on me, teeth clenched. "Connor, are you happy now? You did that on purpose, didn't you?"I actually laughed. I had never seen someone so shameless."Ms. Al

On the night of the gala, I walked into the venue with Celine Gray on my arm and drew more than a few admiring glances.Celine was an investor I had been working with recently. More importantly, the way she looked at me was filled with appreciation and respect—nothing like Naomi's constant, condescending scrutiny."Mr. Brooks, you look very handsome tonight," Celine murmured near my ear."Thank you. You look beautiful as well, Ms. Gray," I replied politely.Just then, a stir broke out near the entrance. Naomi had arrived. She wore a sharply tailored couture suit, still carrying that same air of untouchable arrogance. But the person beside her—Tristan—was difficult to describe. He had shown up in a bright red casual outfit. Worse, he had styled his hair in an over-the-top, flashy look that clashed horribly with the refined atmosphere of the event.Whispers rippled through the crowd. Some people even let out quiet laughs.Naomi clearly noticed. Her expression darkened, and she

After that meeting, Naomi's attitude toward me became strange. She no longer snapped at me over every little thing. Instead, she often looked at me with a searching gaze, as if trying to see straight through me. In fact, sometimes, when she ran into a problem while handling documents, she would instinctively call out, "Connor, how should I deal with this?"By the time I walked over and gave her a straightforward, professional solution, she would suddenly come back to herself. Then, a flicker of annoyance would cross her face, almost as if she felt ashamed of relying on me without realizing it.As for Tristan, his days at the company were getting worse. He might have held the title of executive assistant, but no one took him seriously. Everyone knew the unspoken rule: if something needed doing, go to Mr. Brooks; if not, stay away from the decorative troublemaker.Tristan clearly felt the shift. He began trying every possible way to prove himself—or perhaps more accurately, to prov
