Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
Elsie could barely maintain her composure. "W-What did you say? Didn't you tell Franklin you'd rather die than go with him on deployment? Why..."

I shrugged casually and replied, "I changed my mind at the last minute. Is that not allowed?"

Elsie opened and closed her mouth, wanting to say something but unable to find the words.

I looked over at Franklin, whose expression remained neutral. Wordlessly, he quietly added my name to the deployment roster. Seeing my name written on the list, I silently breathed a sigh of relief. Then, I turned to go back to my room to pack.

Elsie could not contain herself and followed me. Puzzled, I asked, "Elsie? What's the matter?"

Elsie gripped my hands tightly and whispered, "Mikayla, tell me honestly... You said before that you didn't want to go to the island, so why did you change your mind?"

Through the small gap in the half-open door, it seemed that I saw Franklin. I replied, "Weren't you the one who convinced me to go?"

Elsie's face turned ashen, but she forced a smile and said, "I'm just curious, considering what you said before..."

Reflecting on my past behavior, I nodded and admitted, "You're right, I really didn't want to go."

A spark of hope lit up in Elsie's eyes, but I quickly added, "But staying here alone without my parents or friends around would be worse than going to the island. At least Franklin will take good care of me there."

Elsie's words caught in her throat, and she could not manage to persuade me any further. I knew exactly what she was plotting: she did not want me to go.

In my previous life, though I was spoiled and difficult, Elsie had been the one stirring up trouble behind the scenes.

Right after I married Franklin, she would whisper in my ear every single day, telling me that as a wealthy heiress, marrying a rough military man like Franklin was beneath me. She would say he did not understand women like Reuben did.

Day after day, her constant nagging made me feel sorry for myself every time I looked at Franklin. It made me miss Reuben even more and want to get back together with him.

When I thought about it carefully, though, I remembered how Franklin had always tried to make things better.

I hated living in a cramped, dull little house, so he traded in his military commendations to buy us a bigger home. I complained about not having a driver, so he got me a car and a driver despite being low-profile.

The typical mother-in-law problems did not even exist since Franklin had solved that issue from the start by keeping his mother comfortably settled in the countryside.

One could say that after marrying Franklin, my life was even better than before.

I had been given a second chance, and I would never again fall for Elsie's poisonous words.

After a long pause, I finally heard Elsie whisper, "What about Reuben?"

  • When I Loved the Wrong Man   Chapter 9

The night Franklin and I had our long talk, his very first sentence made my entire body tremble. He asked, "Did you get reborn, too?"I could not quite remember how I answered him. After all, just the fact that I had been reborn was shocking enough. However, knowing that Franklin had returned as well was almost too much to believe. All I knew was that when I nodded, that man who always wore such a cold, distant face suddenly pulled me into his arms and broke down, crying his heart out. He confessed that he had regretted it his whole life for forcing me to sign the divorce agreement and leaving me to die so miserably. Before my brain could even process what was happening, he started explaining everything on his own. Franklin had noticed something was off about Elsie from very early on. For instance, she was just a country girl, yet she could read and write fluently. She had gotten into nursing school and could even understand foreign languages.Despite having plenty of excellent

When I went to Franklin with the divorce papers, he did not argue or make a scene. He simply had a long talk with me through the night. The light in his study stayed on until dawn. When the morning light broke, I walked away with the signed divorce agreement. The moment I opened the study door, Elsie appeared out of nowhere, as if she had been waiting there all along. She snatched that thin piece of paper from my hands, shock and delight written all over her face. She exclaimed, "Mikayla, are you really going to divorce Franklin? Even though he's been so good to you?" Maybe the surprise was so good that she forgot to play coy.I smiled faintly and said, "Yeah, wasn't it you who told me? Franklin's just a poor nobody. How could he ever be good enough for me? I'm a pampered little lady, stuck out here on this island where it's all heat and dust, and I can't even leave without reporting it first! I'm done living like this. I'd rather run away with Reuben."My eyes softened, showin

Elsie linked arms with Franklin, her face beaming with a bright smile. Meanwhile, Franklin turned his head to listen patiently as she spoke, still carrying her luggage in his other hand. She spotted me before he did. Smiling, she said something to Franklin, then hurried over to me."Mikayla! What are you doing waiting here? Oh my goodness, I totally forgot! Franklin had to go on assignment, and he left in such a rush that day that he forgot to tell you."He forgot to tell me, yet he managed to bring Elsie with him.My heart churned with a storm of emotions. The image of the two of them walking arm-in-arm in front of me from my previous life flashed before my eyes again. It gave me the overwhelming feeling that no matter how hard I tried, I could not change what was destined to happen. Reuben would keep coming after me again and again, and I could not help but wonder if Franklin would still end up falling in love with Elsie in the end. My gaze fell on Franklin, who remained sile

After I finished taking a cold shower, the waiting doctor examined me thoroughly. After a long while, he finally reported to the stone-faced man sitting stiffly on the couch."Nothing to worry about, Commander Wallace. Mrs. Wallace has no traces of that substance left in her system. However, she has a weak constitution, so please make sure she stays warm these next few days to avoid catching a fever."Franklin nodded silently, and the doctor wisely took his leave. The enormous room was filled only with the sound of my heavy breathing.Franklin suddenly stood up and shoved a steaming hot mug into my hands. "Drink it." The spicy aroma assaulted my nostrils, making me instinctively frown. Just as I was about to refuse, Franklin knelt down, grabbed my chin, and poured the entire mug of ginger drink down my throat without hesitation. His voice, filled with frustrated disappointment, rang in my ears. "Mikayla, do you really have to keep fooling around with that fool?"It felt like a

"I thought you had finally come to your senses and wanted to make our marriage work, but apparently..." Franklin's lips curled into a mocking smile, and the ice-cold look in his eyes cut deep into my heart. For a moment, I seemed to see him from my previous life, towering over me as he threw the divorce papers at me and forced me to sign them. The intimidating aura Franklin radiated made my whole body tremble uncontrollably. However, Reuben was still too reckless to realize he was digging his own grave. Like a fool, he lifted his chin, grabbed my hand, and locked our fingers together. As if declaring his territory, he defiantly spoke, "Commander Wallace, you used your position back then to tear Mikayla and me apart and took her away from me. Now..."The sharp click of a gun being loaded cut off Reuben's words. Franklin's eyes were blood red as he looked at Reuben like he was already a dead man.Reuben's throat bobbed nervously. He instinctively took a step back, trying to hide b

After three days and nights of travel, we finally arrived at the island. The island was not as barren as I had imagined. On the contrary, Franklin had arranged for everything from food to clothing to be just as comfortable as before. As soon as we got to the house on the island, Franklin grabbed my arm and pulled me into the bedroom. I had never noticed before how handsome Franklin actually was. With his buzz cut, broad shoulders, narrow waist, and slim hips, he had the perfect rugged look.My gaze swept over him inch by inch, and the man in front of me could not help but blush to his ears. His grip on my wrist was firm but not uncomfortable. He asked, "What are you staring at?"I could hear a hint of embarrassed anger in his voice, and I could not help but tease him, "You're my husband. What's wrong with me looking at you? Forget looking... Even if I touched you, what could you possibly do about it?"True to my word, I boldly reached out and felt his muscular chest. Sure enough,
