MasukUnexpected Encounters
Jessica's POV
The first rays of sunlight slipped through the curtains, nudging me awake.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," Rolda's cheerful voice floated in,and I groaned, stretching lazily.
The room smelled faintly of coffee and the promise of a new day.
"You're dressed already? Isn't it too early?" I mumbled, squinting at her.
"It's past 8am," she said, smoothing the front of her blouse. "I have to be at work by 8:30." She added casually
I let out a tired laugh, swinging my legs over the bed. "I haven't had a peaceful sleep in years. I forgot what this feels like." I yawned tiredly.
Rolda's hand found mine, squeezing gently. "You're back,Jesse. That's what matters. Just breathe it in." She assured me.
I nodded, a small smile tugging at my lips. I finally returned to New York, after two years of running, hiding, and grieving, not just for my mother but for the version of myself I'd lost.
After Rolda left for work, I dressed quickly, threw my hair into a ponytail, and grabbed my bag.
I needed to see the city again, breathe its chaos and reclaim my freedom.
The apartment felt safe, but it also felt like a cage if I stayed in it too long.
By mid-morning,I had hailed a taxi and instructed the driver, "Walmart."
The streets of New York passed in a blur. For the first time in years, I felt the simple thrill of privacy. Strangers moving around me,none knowing my past, none watching me.
I wandered through the grocery store, picking up vegetables and checking items off a mental list.
The boring act of shopping was a luxury I had forgotten, a freedom disguised as normalcy. And then, it happened.
Someone collided into me, sending my basket tumbling to the floor. I bent down to help pick up the fallen items. Then I froze.
"Jessica?" The voice was calm, steady, familiar. My heart stuttered in my chest. I looked up and saw Gabriel.
Jake's best friend. The one man I had always trusted in that toxic world. He was staring at me, eyes wide, mouth slightly open in disbelief.
"I... I didn't expect to see you here," I muttered, my voice tighter than I intended.
Gabriel's expression softened, a mixture of concern and surprise showing. "I've been looking for you... everyone has. We had no idea where you went. " He mentioned, I could see the relief all over him.
I forced a smile, stepping back, putting distance between us. "Let's not talk about that. I'm just... back in the city for a while." I replied carefully,my words not giving room to further questions.
He nodded, but the eagerness in his eyes betrayed him. "I'm glad you're okay. Truly. I.." He was saying when I cut in.
"Gabriel, stop," I said firmly. "I appreciate your concern, but I'm handling things myself now. No more questions, no more tracking me. Please. " I pleaded,my eyes locked to his with tenacity.
His shoulders relaxed a bit, and he nodded. "Of course. I understand. I just... wanted to make sure you're safe." Gabriel responded.
I gave a small,honest smile. "I am. Thank you." I assured him.
He hesitated, glancing around the store.
"I have to... I have to tell Jake you're back. He's been searching everywhere for two years." He instantly added as though he was just meeting me.
My blood instantly ran cold. I had hoped to stay under the radar, to exist for a few days without him knowing. I couldn't help but ask. "Tell him what?" I questioned, trying to keep my voice steady.
"That you're here," Gabriel admitted, avoiding my eyes.
"I didn't want to, but he'll find out eventually. I just... thought you should know." He reminded me.
A cold weight settled in my stomach. Two years of running,of freedom, even if fragile could vanish in an instant.
I took a deep breath, forcing calm.
"Thank you for telling me," I said evenly. "But I'm not ready to see him. Not yet. And Gabriel.... you can't tell him anything else. I won't allow it." I threatened as though the situation was still within my power.
He studied me carefully, then gave a slow nod. "I understand, Jessica. Truly."
I forced another smile and turned away, trying to focus on the groceries in my basket. But my eyes flicked to the front of the store and froze.
A sleek black car idled just outside the automatic doors. Its engine hummed quietly, harmless but too familiar.
My chest tightened.
I didn't need to see who was inside. I already knew it was Jake.
My pulse quickened. Fear, anger, and a spark of desire collided in a storm within me. It was something I haven't allow myself feel in years.
I gripped my basket tighter, forcing myself to stay calm.
Gabriel must have noticed the change in me. "He hasn't seen you yet," he whispered. "You're safe for now." He said with confidence.
I nodded, not trusting my voice. I needed to move, to get out, to think. But part of me froze.
The past and present crashed in that moment, and I realized this was no longer about avoidance, I would have to face him eventually.
And when that day came, it wouldn't be on his terms.
With one last glance at Gabriel, I said gently, "I have to go."
I walked swiftly to the cashier, paid, and stepped out into the sunlight.
The city hummed around me indifferent, but I knew Jake had found me.
And nothing, not the years, the pain, freedom I had clawed back, would stop him from coming.
My chest tightened, my mind racing with plans and defenses.
I was ready.... but was I ready for him?
Jessica's POV "Miss Wilson, please have a seat."The moment Mr. Bernard said those words, I knew something was wrong.People didn't usually get summoned into management offices before ten in the morning unless there was a problem. My first thought was that I had made a mistake.Maybe a guest had complained, or there was an issue with a reservation.I also wondered if I had forgotten something important during yesterday's shift.I sat down carefully and waited.Across the desk, Mr. Bernard looked unusually pleased with himself. That only made me more nervous."Am I in trouble?" I asked.Mr.Bernard blinked before laughing."In trouble?"His amusement did nothing to calm me."Then why do I feel like I'm about to be fired?" I asked again."You aren't being fired." He said calmly. I released a breath in relief."Then what's going on?" I enquired calmly.Instead of answering immediately, he slid a cream-colored envelope across the desk. The hotel logo wasn't on it and neither was my name.
Jessica's POV "You're staring at that sandwich like it personally offended you."The voice nearly made me choke on my drink.I looked up sharply.Roman stood beside my table holding a paper coffee cup in one hand and an annoyingly relaxed smile on his face.I wasn't surprised to see him since he's the only one bold enough to speak such words.I lowered my drink slowly."What are you doing here?" I questioned, my eyes locked to his."I would have expected some warm welcome, Jessica," He said calmly."It's my lunch break," I muttered, my dissatisfaction was visible for him to see."I can see that," He added.I looked around the small cafe across from the hotel. The place wasn't crowded.A few office workers occupied the corner tables. Two students sat near the window.Nobody seemed interested in us.Unfortunately, that didn't make me feel any better.Roman pointed at the empty chair opposite me."Mind?" He asked innocently."Yes," I replied but he sat down anyway. The man had a remarka
Roman's POV "Your candidate performed better than we expected."The statement greeted me the moment I stepped into the conference room.I looked up from the tablet in my hand.Across the table sat three members of the recruitment panel. The oldest among them pushed a file toward me.I didn't sit immediately, Instead, I glanced at the name printed on the folder.Jessica Wilson.A small smile threatened to appear, but I quickly buried it."She's not my candidate," I said. The woman nearest to me laughed."Could've fooled us," she added quietly.I finally sat down. The file remained untouched before me."You're giving me too much credit," I uttered, my eyes scanning the room."No," another man replied. "We're giving you exactly the amount of credit you deserve."I already knew where this conversation was heading. And I didn't like it.The first mistake people made about me was assuming I enjoyed explaining myself.Because I clearly didn't.The second mistake was assuming I spent my time
Jessica's POV I almost didn't go.The email sat open on my phone while I stared at it for what felt like the hundredth time. The address, time, and the instructions were clear. Everything I needed was right there.Yet somehow leaving Rolda's cottage felt harder than it should have.Maybe because opportunities always came with consequences. That was something life had taught me early.I slipped the phone back into my bag and headed for the door."You're doing that thing again."Rolda stood near the kitchen holding a cup of coffee."What thing?" I asked in confusion. "The overthinking thing." Rolda explained. I rolled my eyes at her while she smiled before speaking again. "You've been reading that email since breakfast.""I just want to be sure," I said quietly. "You are sure," Rolda countered. "No, I'm not," I persisted. Rolda pointed toward the door."Then go find out."The response was typical Rolda. She had a talent for making difficult things sound easy.Unfortunately, I w
Jessica's POV By the time my shift ended, I was exhausted mentally.Roman had somehow managed to occupy an entire corner of my mind without even being present.Every time I looked at the folder in my locker, questions followed.I couldn't stop wondering why now and how much he knew.I locked the locker and headed toward the employee exit. The hotel was quieter now. Most of the evening guests had already checked in and the lobby no longer carried the frantic energy of earlier.I started walking toward the bus stop. The air felt cooler than usual. It was comfortable and for once, my thoughts weren't focused on Jake. That alone felt like a small victory.I was halfway down the block when I noticed the man.At first, I didn't think much of it.He stood near a newspaper stand scrolling through his phone. It was erfectly normal and I kept walking.A minute later, I glanced back again. He was walking too.I decided to wave off the uneasiness stirring within me. It was actually nothing. The
Jake's POV The moment I heard Roman's name, I stopped reading. My eyes remained fixed on the report in front of me.I was completely stunned and for several seconds, I couldn't move or speak, my eyes focused on a point and then slowly, I looked up."What did you just say?" I asked sharply, I could feel a lump on my throat. The investigator sitting across from my desk shifted uncomfortably."He arranged it." He added.A dangerous calm settled over me."What exactly did he arrange?" I questioned, holding my breath as I anticipated the worse."The job opportunity." He answered. My jaw tightened instantly, and for a brief moment, I wondered if I had heard wrong. But unfortunately, I hadn't.Roman Stone, had done what I had expected of him.I dropped the report onto my desk. The papers scattered slightly and the investigator wisely stayed silent. My eyes were burning with fury now as spoke."How long?" The question came out low."Several days," He replied. My heart thumped hard at his wo
