Chapter 1

Author: Wulan
Ian's POV:

I barely remembered how I made it home from the hospital.

By the time my wife, Agnes Trelawny, returned, the house was already a complete wreck.

I smashed our wedding photo on the floor, scattering shards of glass everywhere. I tore every red wedding character off the walls and even wrecked the marriage bed.

I sat slumped beside the sofa, surrounded by empty liquor bottles.

Agnes stood by the door and fell silent for a moment. Then she walked over and reached for my hand, checking it for injuries. “Are you hurt?”

I jerked my hand away, unable to contain the rage boiling inside me any longer.

I glared at her with bloodshot eyes and demanded, “Why?”

Agnes arched an eyebrow. “Why did I marry you?”

She seemed to give the question some serious thought before suddenly breaking into a smile.

“You’re gentle, attentive, and meticulous. You were even willing to give up your career and step away from the spotlight to stay home for me. You’re husband material. Nathan, on the other hand, is a spoiled rich boy. You can’t even count on him to do the dishes.”

The more casually she admitted it all, the more my heart ached.

Agnes noticed my reddened eyes and slipped into my embrace. “Come on. Didn’t I already tell you? Nathan and I will never work out. From now on, we’ll just be raising the kid together from now on. That’s all.”

I shoved her away and roared, “Then why would you do this to me? Why marry me when you’re already having his child?!”

One was the woman I had loved for years. The other was my best friend. Together, they had made a fool of me, stringing me along without a clue.

I clutched my chest, struggling to breathe beneath the weight of the truth.

Agnes did not answer. She simply stared at me as though I were some lunatic.

After a long silence, she rose to her feet, and said in an impatient tone, “Stop making a scene. Nathan’s stomach problems are acting up again. He’s waiting for me to make him some chicken soup.”

I stood rooted to the spot, watching her move about the kitchen.

Agnes had only just given birth, yet she was willing to push through the pain to cook for him.

She turned on the stove, chopped the ingredients, and deftly skimmed the scum from the simmering broth.

In the three years we were together, she had never once cooked for me. I simply assumed she did not know how. It turned out that the woman who never went near a kitchen knew exactly what to do.

Without meaning to, I recalled something Nathan Gray had once told me his ex-girlfriend had gone to extraordinary lengths to cure his picky eating habits.

A pampered heiress who had never lifted a finger around the house had spent day after day in the kitchen, experimenting with recipes just for him.

Once, she had even blown up her family’s kitchen. I imagined what that scene must have looked like.

Now, as I watched Agnes work, every detail Nathan had once shared with me began to fall into place.

All those moments I had deliberately brushed aside came flooding back.

Whenever we went somewhere by car, Nathan was always the first to remember Agnes’ motion sickness pills.

Whenever we ate together, Nathan would casually remind me, “She doesn’t eat scallions.”

Whenever Nathan’s stomach acted up, Agnes always reacted a beat faster than I did.

Whenever Nathan fell ill, Agnes would abandon an entire room full of people in the middle of a meeting and rush to the hospital.

Before I knew it, the kitchen fell silent, leaving only the faint simmer of the soup.

I looked at Agnes, at the focused expression on her face as she watched the simmering pot.

Then, in a hoarse voice, I called her name.

“Agnes, let’s get a divorce.”

“I have Daisy to thank for that. She showed up and beat the hell out of me. As for why I didn’t come looking for you right away…”Agnes lifted the hem of her pant leg, revealing an electronic ankle monitor.“I hired the best lawyer I could find and fought a long, hard legal battle. That was the only way I managed to get a one-year reprieve and a chance to see you. I know that no matter what I say or do, you probably won’t ever forgive me. But I still wanted to see you. Just once. To see if you were doing well.“I’m sorry. It was all my fault. I love you, Ian. I should have realized my own feelings sooner. You’re the one I love. When I heard you were dead, I—”“Ian! Come on!” One of my hiking buddies called out from up ahead.Agnes never finished her sentence. She did not try to continue either. She just stood there, a faint smile lingering on her lips as she kept looking at me, like she was trying to etch my face into her memory.I furrowed my brows slightly. “Are you done? I nee

Ian's POV:Two years later, I was sitting in a café abroad, listening to a news broadcast from back home.“Former Trelawny Corporation CEO Agnes Trelawny has been convicted of soliciting assault and first-degree murder. Following a two-year trial, she has been sentenced to life imprisonment, suspended for one year.”The coffee in my hand trembled slightly at those words before the surface became still again.Behind me, Daisy’s hurried footsteps approached. “Hey, you forgot something again.”She handed me my bag and asked, “Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you?”I smiled and shook my head. “It’s an all-male hiking group. You really want to tag along?”Daisy immediately shook her head. She could not stand the men from her old crew. They smelled awful and never stopped talking. She preferred people like me—gentle, quiet, and easygoing.Someone pleasant to look at and even more pleasant to be around.Still, she could not help reminding me, “If you get tired or anything

“Let me out! Let me out of here! I don’t want to stay in this place!”The door slammed shut behind Nathan. Agnes walked into the adjoining room and slapped Sophie across the face. She let out a cold laugh. “You two actually teamed up to deceive me!”Sophie winced in pain but still managed to force a smile. “Ms. Trelawny, believe it or not, he fooled me too. He promised he would marry me.”Agnes said nothing. As she turned to leave, she enunciated sharply and deliberately, “Get out.”Sophie hurried after her. “What about him?”Agnes stopped in her tracks and replied in an icy voice, “He can go to hell and answer for what he did to Ian.”Agnes sat just outside the room. From inside came Nathan’s screams and furious curses.“Don’t touch me! Ah! Get your filthy hands off me, you disgusting old women! Agnes, I was wrong! Please, let me go! Somebody help me! Please!”The woman sat motionless in her chair, cradling an urn in her arms. Over and over, her fingers brushed across its su

Agnes ignored him and held up her phone, showing him the email. Her voice was calm and unhurried, yet there was a bone-chilling coldness beneath every word. “You sent this email, didn’t you?”Nathan’s eyes widened instinctively. He stared at the screen and muttered, “I already deleted it. How could it still…”She let out a bitter laugh, but her eyes had turned red. She could not believe that such a pathetic little scheme had driven her own husband to the brink of death.Suddenly, she grabbed Nathan by the throat. “Why did you do it? He was your best friend! Why did you have to drive him to his death? Ian did nothing wrong! We were the ones who cheated on him and betrayed him! We were the ones at fault! You deserve to die! I’ll kill you and make you pay for what you did to Ian!”Nathan shoved her away. In an instant, Agnes pulled out a gun.Nathan froze, too afraid to move.Sophie panicked. She did not expect Agnes to be this unhinged. “Ms. Trelawny, murder is a crime.”Agnes s

Third-Person POV:Only then did Agnes realize that the man who had been alive and well just yesterday was now nothing more than ashes in a small urn.Suddenly, she broke down sobbing. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry!”However, no one answered her anymore, and no one would ever bring her a bowl of soup in the middle of the night again. She let the pain in her stomach twist and churn, as though she were deliberately punishing herself. There was a glass of milk right beside the bed, yet she did not move an inch. She simply clutched the urn tightly to her chest, terrified that it might disappear if she let go.She remained that way until the lock clicked and the door opened. Her assistant stepped inside. She said awkwardly, “Ms. Trelawny, Mr. Gray is asking to see you.”That was when a flicker of life returned to Agnes’ dull, lifeless eyes. Her voice was hoarse as she demanded, “How did things end up like this?”Her assistant answered nervously, “M-Ms. Trelawny, you sent us an email. Don’

By the time Agnes arrived at the funeral home, the service had already begun. Amid the sobs and wails of mourners, she looked up at the black-and-white portrait displayed at the front of the room. She instinctively rubbed her eyes, convinced she must be seeing things. However, as she stepped closer, she could no longer lie to herself.Agnes stared at the scene before her, dazed and disoriented, murmuring, “How is this possible? How could this be? I never thought he would actually die.”Julian Meadows, my manager, stood nearby, his eyes red with grief. He glared at her, his face twisted with resentment. “What are you doing here? Get out! Just get out! Ian didn’t want to see you! Leave!”Agnes was still reeling from the news of my death. She did not get angry. Instead, she looked at Julian with desperate hope.“He’s not dead, is he? Where have you hidden Ian? Bring him out. Tell him to stop pretending. I’ve already had every video taken down. I won’t hold what he did to Nathan again
